Situasi 2 : Perbualan tentang berat badan
Zan : Hi ….. Ai Ling. You look so different!
Ai Ling : What do you mean?
Zan : Look at you ……… you’ve put on weight!
Ai Ling : Is that so, I’m only 110.
Zan : You’re 110 kg? That’s very heavy!
Ai Ling : Zan, what is wrong with you?
Zan : Why?
Ai Ling : I am 110 pounds not 110 kilogram! These two units are different. So, we have to convert pounds to kilogram
Zan : Why do we have to convert the units? It’s so complicated. Why not use the standard unit ‘kilogram’. Everybody knows that!
Situasi 2 : (At Uncle Chong’s hardware shop)
Ai Ling : Hello Uncle Chong, here is a list of things for my grandfather.
(Ai Ling reads the list she got from her grandfather).
3 feet plywood2 yards of rope2 tahils of nails1 kati of cement
Uncle Chong: Oh…. These are the old units of measurement for length and weight. We
used these units a long time ago. We don’t use these units anymore
Zan : Yes uncle, we don’t use these units nowadays. There are not standard units. We are presently using the S. I. units
Uncle Chong : What is that, Zan?
Zan : S. I. means international system for units. Example ‘metre’ for length and ‘kilogram’ for mass. Everyone in the world uses the same units now. There will be less confusion and there is no need to convert from one unit to another.
Uncle Chong : Oo …. I see! I’m using both the new and the old units. It’s good to know the existence of a variety of units in measurements. Even some of my older customers now use the S. I. units
Ai Ling : So now I must tell my grandfather to use the SI units
Zan : That goes for me too!
Ai Ling : So now Zan, since I’ve got my shopping done, let’s walk back. Would you like to stop by my house it’s only a few chains away
Zan : What? Walk to your house? How far is ‘a few chains’, Ai Ling?
Ai Ling : Oh sorry, I’m still using the old system. I guess it would be about half a kilometre or so
Ai Ling and Zan: Bye Uncle Chong! See you again
Uncle Chong : Bye, girls! Please send my regards to your grandfather Ai Ling. Remind him not to use the old system again!
