PART A (20 marks)

1. Write a cause-and-effect essay on the detrimental effects of littering. Your essay should

be around 1300 to 1500 words long.

2. Refer to these websites for information on the danger of littering.

3. Your essay should contain the following:

- An introductory paragraph . In the introductory paragraph, provide some background

information about the topic and a thesis statement – an introductory sentence to the

body of the essay. Provide a clear definition to the word ‘littering’ in your

introduction. You could relate to the problem of littering in your own area or refer to

newspapers or the internet for background information.

- Body of essay . You can have up to three paragraphs for the body. Each paragraph

should focus on different areas that littering has a negative impact on. You can focus

on the effects of littering on the environment, animals and humans. External reading is

necessary to explain the effects of littering. All outside sources used to explain each

effect must be properly referenced. When describing the effects, use appropriate

cause-and-effect words/ phrases.

- Concluding paragraph . In this paragraph, restate the thesis statement and close the

essay appropriately. You could make a prediction of future consequences, conclude

with a relevant quotation or provide some suggestions to ensure that littering will be

curbed in the future.

4. Your paragraph will be evaluated using the rubrics on page 6.

1. Analyse the contents of the visual in diagram 1 and 2.

2. In a 400 to 500 word paragraph, describe the similarities and differences between

hurricanes and tornadoes. Refer to diagram 1 and 2 on the next page for guidance.
