Read the passage below and answer the questions tlnt follow.

A few hours after the birth of her son in August 1965, Marian Burke'sdoctor stood by her bed and said, "Your son has Down Syndrome." The words cuttbrough Marian and her husband, Frank like a knife. They could not imagine their sonbeing retarded, probably never be able to read or even feed himself Th€ doctoradvised thsm to institutionalize him but they were determined to care for their son.Tbey took Christopher home.

Christopher's condition becarne more evident gradually as his speech waslured and garbled. He was two years old before he took his first wobbly steps. Thelearning ability of a Dorvn Syndrome child can be raised by exercises andstimulation. The Burke family did just that from the very beginning. Christopher'ssisters, Anne and Ellen, sat with him in front ofa minor and played a game to helphim talk. They said words for him to Epeat and soon he was able to say those words. His brother, J.R, worked on his coordination. He taught Christopher to swim and playbasketball-

One aftemoon when Chris was eight years old, he found a box of 15photoFaphs taken of J.R, Ellen and Anne when they were child actors intelevision commercials. Haltingly, he announced, '.1 want to do that. I want to be onTV too". His parents couldn't bring themselves to tell him the truth. Chris neverforgot his dream. Over and over, he practiced lip-syncing his favourite htnes anddancing whenever a teacher in his school put on a record.

Chris completed his special school education at the age of21. His familyhelped him look for a rcgular job but to no avail. Both his sisters had their ownfamilies and they knew that Chris was a caring and loving person. At last Ellenmanaged to get Chris a volunteer's job at a school for children with severedisabilities.

But, in his heart, Chris was still set on going to Hollywood. His brother talkedto him, hoping to make him awate of his impossible dream- Chris, however was notgoing to give up. When he was 19, he had seen a TV programme that featured a ten-y€ar-old actor narned Jason Kingsley who had Dolr'n Syndrome. Chris had writtenJason to congratulate him. Jason's mother, Emily Kingsley, responded with a warmnote.

A wcck later, Chris made another trip to Los Angeles, this tinre for the actualmaking of the novie. Chris was exited and happy to be there. The movie was broadcastin September 1987. Write r producer Michael Braverman decided to create seriesaround Chris about a fanrily with a son who has Down S)'ndtome. Plans for theprospectiv€ show took more than eight months to complete, after which Chris wascalled up to shoot the pilot series episode.

Chris was the central character in the series and there were doubts if he couldhandle thc workload. However, Chris superb performance in the pilot episode where herecited Edgar Allan Poe's pocm "The Raven" without any cue cards assured everyoneuf his capability

The debut broadcast of the series "Life Goes On" on Septembcr 12, 1989,brought a chorus of acclaim and gratitudc. One newspaper stor1, quoted a young rhother

who said that since the show, people had been coming up to talk to her retarded soninstead of shunning him.

Chris Burke has won countless motal victories for mentally handicapped people

everywhere. One of his most moving pleas came at the end of rhe episode when he

chose to speak for himself and a1l kids with Down Syrdrome. "We have a life, we have

dreams, just like you. All we want is a chance to be your friend."

Chris has achieved his two fondest dreams: he's a TV star and he's helping
