    cuisine.ItiswidelygrownforcommercialuseinChina,India,andmostothercountriesinAsia.

    StaraniseisaningredientofthetraditionalfivespicepowderofChinesecooking.Itisalsoa

    majoringredientinthemakingofph,aVietnamesenoodlesoup.Itisusedasaspicein

    preparationofBiryaniinAndhraPradesh,astateofsouthernIndia.InMarathi,itiscalled

    stagemanufacturingprocesswhichtakesayear.Reportssay90%oftheharvestisalreadyused

    bytheSwisspharmaceuticalmanufacturerRocheinmakingTamiflu,butotherreportssay

    thereisanabundanceofthespiceinthemainregions Fujian,Guangdong,Guangxiand

    Yunnan.

    Japanesestaranise(Illiciumanisatum),asimilartree,isnotediblebecauseitishighlytoxic(duetocontainingsikimitoxin);instead,ithasbeenburnedasincenseinJapan.Casesofillness,

    including"seriousneurologicaleffects,suchasseizures",reportedafterusingstaranisetea

    maybearesultofusingthisspecies.Japanesestaranisecontainsanisatin,whichcausessevere

    inflammationofthekidneys,urinarytractanddigestiveorgans.
