EDITORIAL MESSAGE

Dear Readers, Thanks once again to the editorial board for this opportunity to pen a few words for this issue. September 2010 happens to be the month of celebrations with the Malaysia Day and Aidilfitri occur-ring in the same month. Admittedly, Aidilfitri is the biggest religious festival in Malaysia and in the true Malaysian tradition, open houses are still being held around the country. So, the e-bulletin takes pride in wishing all our Muslim staff and students a wonderful Aidilfitri. If you are overly concerned about the bulge around the waist after having attended so many Raya parties… don’t despair…you can join the Salsa aerobics group every Tuesday and Thursday at the MPH. Time is flying past very quickly and before we realize it, we are already approaching the end of the academic year. We are in the home stretch for the end of the year rush with Deepavali, Hari Raya Haji and then Christmas celebrations all lined up one after the other. Aren’t we a blessed nation with so many reasons to celebrate and so much going for us? Let’s stop whining and start counting our bless-ings. May the Almighty bestow upon every one of us greater wisdom and fair-mindedness in all our dealings with our fellow human beings so that together we strive to make this a better country for all of us. Pretty soon the end of semester examinations will be here and the e-bulletin wishes good luck to all RCMP students on the upcoming examinations. We believe you are putting in conscientious and dili-gent effort towards your academic pursuits to merit good grades in the forthcoming final examina-tions. As far as the e-bulletin is concerned, we have been receiving fairly good responses in terms of articles from our staff and students. Nevertheless, we still need a greater number of academic oriented arti-cles from our staff so that we have a good mix of light and some serious material in the e-bulletin to cater to the different needs of our readers.

‘MINGGU EKSPRESI MERDEKA’

In Conjunction with the 53rd Merdeka Day celebrations of 2010, the General Studies Unit (GSU) in collaboration with Semester four students of Pharmacy UNIKL RCMP, organized ‘Minggu Ekspresi Merdeka’. The objective of this event was to provide an opportunity for the students of UNIKL RCMP to express their feelings of love and patriotism towards our beloved nation, through public speaking and poetry recital.

This activity started on 23 August 2010 with the preliminary rounds of the public speaking and poetry recital

competitions. A total of 20 students took part in the competitions from various academic programmes such as MBBS, Pharmacy, Radiography, Nursing and Physiotherapy. The most encouraging aspect was the participation of students from different ethnic groups in UNIKL-RCMP, which reflected the true spirit of Merdeka.

During the preliminary round, the Deputy Dean of Academic, Dr Mohammad bin Abd Rahman, was present to

give his moral support for the event. The final, held on 25 August 2010, was officiated by the Deputy Dean of Thecno-preneurship and Student Affairs, Professor Dr Awang IPR who gave a very emotional rendition of a patriotic poem dur-ing his closing speech.

From the 20 students who took part in the preliminary round, 8 students were selected to enter the final round.

I recognized Hj Rahim when I first saw his picture as one of the teaching staff of the former Perak College of Medicine (PCM) in the PCM website before joining UNIKL RCMP about 5 years ago. I came to know him through several community projects organized by the college especially for the Orang Asli communities. He was a very simple and unassuming person who was sometimes very quiet. Generally he was a very kind and helpful person. We used to meet at one corner of UNIKL RCMP campus after office hours to get to know each other better. We shared some of the good values that he had cultivated but he might have had some difficulty in changing a habit that could have affected his respiratory system. Hj Rahim was willing to sacrifice his time on most occasions to visit the remote parts of the Orang Asli settlements in Perak and Kelantan whenever requested to be part of our medical mobile team. We travelled to some of those remote villages in a four-wheel drive and it used to take sev-eral hours passing through winding timber tracts to reach the destination. While in the rainforest of Royal Belum State Park in Hulu Perak , it would take us several hours by boat to reach the settle-ments where the rural health services were most needed and a hospital was far away . Hj Rahim with his vast experience in dispensing and his familiarity with the drugs, gave me confi-dence in treating the people during our mobile clinic sessions. He organized the packaging and dispensing of drugs as prescribed during our field visits. We used to spend several days in the Orang Asli villages with our UNIKL RCMP students conducting community health programmes and introducing the students to the life in the rural areas for better understanding of the health and medical problems affecting the communities.

Hj Rahim was well respected by his former students who are already employed in government and private hospitals. On one occasion we met some of his former students at the Pharmacy while on a visit to the Pantai Hospital in Ipoh for vaccination against influenza virus prior to our medical mo-bile mission for earthquake victims in Pariaman and Padang , Sumatra in 2009. In 2009, Hj Rahim volunteered himself to be part of our medical mobile mission under the Malay-sian Relief Agency to serve in the relief mission for the earthquake victims in Pariaman and Padang in Sumatra . He had contributed greatly towards the team effort and in the smooth running of the mobile clinics and dispensing of prescriptions to the earthquake victims.

Hj Rahim’s demise is not only a great loss to his family but also to his friends and colleagues. Let us

cherish the goodwill that he fostered and continue the legacy he has left behind by serving the

communities in need of help.

Kemerdekaan sebenarnya bermaksud pembebasan Negara kita daripada penjajah. Namun yang lebih utama, merdeka bermaksud kebebasan diri, masyarakat dan Negara daripada masalah sosial dan akhlak generasi zaman sekarang. Oleh itu kita mesti membebaskan minda kita yang masih berada dalam kelas ketiga un-tuk memartabatkan pengertian merdeka sebenar. Iaitu minda merdeka, jiwa juga harus merdeka. Jika anda diberi peluang apa yang anda akan lakukan di RCMP 5 tahun dari sekarang :

Mendidik pelajar yang berkualiti dengan ilmu dan akhlak yang terpuji agar RCMP men-jadi gedung ilmu yang terkenal di mata dunia dalam bidang sains kesihatan.

Membantu rakyat Malaysia terutama golongan warga emas yang kurang benasib baik

kerana merekalah warga yang patut dihargai.

MERDEKA REFLECTIONS

KEMERDEKAAN dalam erti kata sebenar ialah kita merdeka dan berjaya membebaskan diri

daripada mensyirikkan (menyekutukan) Allah dalam apa jua bentuk sekalipun. Kita masih

belum merdeka sekiranya aqidah (pegangan), pemikiran, kehidupan seharian dan cara

bekerja kita masih dijajah dan tidak bertepatan dengan ajaran Islam yang syumul

(komprehensif) dan diredhai oleh Allah.

Jika anda diberi peluang apa yang anda akan lakukan di RCMP 5 tahun dari sekarang :

Berusaha untuk menguruskan unit/pertangungjawaban yang diberikan dengan lebih sis-tematik dan professional selari dengan ajaran Islam.

Berusaha menerapkan nilai-nilai murni seperti mana ajaran Islam kepada semua pelajar

supaya mereka lahir sebagai pelajar yang cemerlang bukan hanya dalam akademik malah

menjadi seorang yang patuh kepada agama, berjasa kepada nusa dan bangsa.
