His Excellency Dr. Makio Miyagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia shared his insights on 21st September 2017 in UTM Kuala Lumpur in front of

600 participants consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Defense,

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MNCs, GLCs, Japanese companies, lecturers, staff and students of MJIIT. The lecture was part of the flagship MJIIT Leadership

Lecture Series.

The topic shared was “Japan with ASEAN and Malaysia: Looking Back on 50 Years of Japan ASEAN & 60 Years of Japan Malaysia Relationship and the

Way Forward” that centered around the 60 year diplomatic relationship between

Japan and Malaysia, the culmination of which, for UTM, led to the formation of the Malaysia-Japan Relationship under the Look East Policy.

Dr. Miyagawa also talked about the dynamic development of bilateral

ties between the two countries, one that started with in the troubled times of

war, but blossomed into a great friendship and partnership in the modern era. These ties were made more impactful with the collaboration between MJIIT and 29 Japanese universities of the Japanese University

Consortium to support the development and progress of MJIIT in capacity building, talent and professional development of staff and students in academic and research activities.

The MJIIT Leadership Lecture Series provides a platform for representatives from both the government and industrial sectors to share their knowledge, experiences, and expertise. These lecture series aims to

offer MJIIT students better understanding of the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of

a professional engineer and to offer better insights into the need for a sustainable development and for managerial and entrepreneurial skills.

On 25th September 2017, Ningen Ryoku: Tea Ceremony Lecture was held at Dewan Azman Hashim, UTM Kuala Lumpur between 3 and

5 pm. Tea Ceremony Class is a part of UMJG 2022 Ningen Ryoku:

Professional Ethics, Safety & Health course for MJIIT students. The lecture was compulsory to the current semester registered students on

the course.

Ningen Ryoku means teaching how to strengthen human skills and

capacity. The lectures were delivered by H.E. Masahiko Horie and Mr. Hafiz Othman from JICA Malaysia.

The format of the lecture were introduction by H.E. Masahiko Horie followed by DVD Viewing Session about the demonstration of the Tea Ceremony. Then, Mr. Hafiz continued with contents, introduction and

concept explanation. The lecture ended with question and answer session.

Before the lecture, the students were required to read The Urasenke Tradition of Tea and article titled The Way of Tea which published in New Straits Times on 23 February 2015. During the lecture, H.E. Horie

highlighted that the idea of Ningen Ryoku was from Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed to make MJIIT students

understand the Japanese culture and way of thinking through the tea ceremony.

BUILDING A STRONG MALAYSIAN BRAND

- JAPANESE EXPERIENCE -

UTM Distinguished Ambassador at MJIIT

Leadership Lecture Series 21 was held on 14th September 2017 at Dewan Azman Hashim, Menara Razak, UTM Kuala Lumpur. The title was

Building a Strong Malaysian Brand - The Japanese Experience -. The

lecture was delivered by His Excellency Prof. Masahiko HORIE . In this lecture, he talked about the supportive environment of the Japanese

Nation Brand as well as the challenges under the current globalized world. The Ambassador’s message is the significance of the Japanese style

education of technology at MJIIT. He encouraged all MJIIT students to build a Strong Malaysian Brand in the world.

His Excellency Prof. Masahiko HORIE is UTM Distinguished Ambassador at MJIIT. He is also Special Assistant for Foreign Minister of Japan, Special Advisor for President of Meiji University, Councilor of

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Advisor for UN Sustainable Energy for All.

STAFF RETIREMENT

The Takasago Grant Research Progress Presentations Meeting with Takasago Japan’s Executive was held on Tuesday, 19th September 2017 at Main Meeting Room Level 3 of MJIIT.

The main purpose of this meeting are to reviewed the research progress report from Takasago’s grant holders named Dr. Sheikh Ahmad

Zaki, Prof. Dr. Koji Iwamoto, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mod Fauzi together with members of Takasago i-Kohza, Prof. Yutaka Asako, Dr. Siti Rahmah Aid,

Dr. Tan Lit Ken and Assoc. Prof. Nor Azwadi.

Five students also presented in this meeting. It is a good networking

collaboration sharing session between MJIIT and the Takasago Thermal Engineering Co. Ltd. The meeting concluded with group photography session. - MJIIT Facebook

On 27th September, DPPC team conducted its regular business meeting with the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) together with Professor Kuniyoshi Takeuchi and JICA Malaysia Office to

discuss on the role of Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Management. - MJIIT Facebook

VISIT TO NATIONAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT AGENCY (NADMA)

On 28th September, Disaster Preparedness & Prevention Centre (DPPC) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) organized the first joint seminar that gathered over 60 participants from different DID

departments at both federal and state levels. Professor Emeritus Kuniyoshi Takeuchi of Yamanashi

University presented on 2 topics, “Transdisciplinary Approaches to Disaster Management: Case studies from Asia” and “Integrated Flood Analysis: Overview of IFAS/RRI models and field application,” while DID

officer and DPPC member each introduced their respective activities in flood mitigation measures and research.

DPPC proposed to jointly develop a research project with DID in the next few months on priority issues to be raised by Humid Tropics Centre (HTC) of DID. - DPPC Website

On 20th September 2017, MJIIT organized MJIIT Industrial Open Day for industries. The participants were from Japanese Chamber of

Trade and Industry Malaysia (JACTIM), HIRO Food Packages

Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., NHK Manufacturing (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., OHTA Precision (M) Sdn. Bhd., Panasonic Management Malaysia, PD

Kawamura Kako Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., Sunrise Tours & Travel Sdn. Bhd., Tateyama Auto Machine (M) Sdn. Bhd., and Tohoku-Wada

Industries Sdn. Bhd.

The program began with welcoming remarks by Prof. Rubiyah binti

Yusof, Dean, MJIIT and Prof. Akio Makishima, Deputy Dean (Internationalization & Liaison) then followed by presentation of

Introduction to MJIIT, Its Human Resource and Research by Mr. Ryotaro Takano. The event continued with presentation of Introduction of

MJIIT’s Advanced Precision Lab by Dr. Jun Ishimatsu. The event ended

with lab tour to Advanced Precison Lab, Chemical analysis Lab, and Nano-fabrication Lab. - Editorial

On 5th October 2017, Toshiba Corporation organized Toshiba Japan Recruitment Talk at

Jumaah Hall, UTM Kuala Lumpur.

FAREWELL: MS. SHAHIRAH BINTI SHAHRUDIN

On 30th August 2017, a farewell party for Ms. Shahirah Binti Shahrudin was held. She has

served as Assistant Programme Manager of

Japan ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) Scholarship. Her commitment and contribution

to MJIIT is highly appreciated.

NSK was presented by Mr Keiji Inaba, Head Human

Resources Department and his team. NSK employed two MJIIT students and also received MJIIT

MAIN ACTIVITIES

THE TEAM

Ten UTM students visited UTM Satellite Office at Meiji University on 21st October 2017. They were invited to go to Japan from 16th to 24th October under

the "Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science" by JST (Japan Science and

Technology Agency).

With the guidance by Professor Nagai of Applied

Chemistry, they conducted a joint research on the process

of developing ISO of plastic

film at the Ikuta Campus. At the Surugadai Campus, they

visited University Museums after they were welcomed at

Satellite Office of the

Academy Common.

UTM STUDENTS VISITED AT UTM SATELLITE OFFICE AT MEIJI

UNIVERSITY

VISIT BY KANAZAWA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

5 students from Kanazawa University were in MJIIT from 4th to 20th September 2017 for short project. They are Ryota Imaizumi, Takashi Yasugi, Junya

Furuta, Hiroki Iwaki, and Shuji Kawasakiya. All of them attached at five different

i-Kohza which are Vehicle System Engineering Research Lab (VSE), Tribology and Precision Machining i-Kohza (TriPrem), Optical Devices and Systems i-Kohza

(ODESY), Shizen Conversion & Separation Technology (SHIZEN) Research Lab and Management of Technology i-Kohza (MOT). The placement were decided based on

their topic of projects.

The students conducted their project at the i-Kohza under supervision of

tutors and required to prepare presentation material which was presented on the last day at TriPreM i-Kohza.

3 Chemical Process Engineering (CPE) students joined Sakura Science Exchange Program at Tokyo City University

(TCU) from 31st July to 8th August 2017. Students joined
