1 A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the buoyant
force, F, of a metal rod and its depth, d, in a liquid.
The metal rod is hung to a spring balance. The actual weight of the metal rod in air
before it is immersed in a liquid is W1 , as shown in Diagram 1.1.

The metal rod is then immersed in a liquid to a depth ,d, of 1.0 cm. The arrangement of the apparatus is
shown in Diagram 1.2.The readings of the weight on the spring balance when the metal rod is immersed
in the liquid is its apparent weight, W2 . The experiment is repeated by
immersing the metal rod to a depth of d = 2.0 cm, 3.0 cm, 4.0 cm, and 5.0 cm.
The readings of the weight on the spring balance are shown in diagrams 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 on page
3, 4 and 5 .
