    KILLER DOGS SHOCK SETTLERS

BESUT: For two months, FELDA Temang settlers have been puzzled over the

disappearance of their livestock at the oil palm plantation in the settlement.

They put the blame on panthers, which had been spotted by hunters at

a nearby jungle about a year ago but it wasnt the panthers that did the killing.

The settlers were dumbfounded when they discovered that the culprit

    was a pack of dogs.

The dogs have been attacking cattle, especially calves. So far, some 80

cattle have died, causing losses of up to RM 50,000.

The settlers are also worried about their own safety. Some 30 of them

are staying home for fear of being attacked by the dogs.

One settler, Zakaria Mat Noor, who witnessed his calf being attacked last

week, said he was afraid that the pack would attack humans. Zakaria, 43, said

the dogs should be eliminated at once.

Another settler, Sulaiman Ibrahim, 72, said he lost 12 of his calves to the

    dogs.

Our only hope is that the authorities will do something, he said.

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

    Conquest of Gunung Tahan

Gunung Tahan at 2,187 metres is the highest mountain in the peninsula

and local trekkers dream of conquering it. I too have similar dreams but with

a difference. I wanted to scale the mountain with my 15-year-old daughter.

2 As a nature enthusiast myself, I wanted to use this opportunity not

only to cultivate greater interest in our country's rich biodiversity but also to

build a stronger bond with my daughter. And so we set out on this adventureof a lifetime. The four-night-five-day trip to Gunung Tahan in Pahang

entailed an 88 km journey from base camp in the park headquarters at Taman

Negara Merapoh, Pahang. We took the night train from Johor Baharu; it was

another 10 hours before we reached Merapoh via the Gua Musang railway

    station.

    5

    10

3 Day 1: It rained heavily, making the river crossing treacherous.

Leeches had a field day. We had at least a dozen leech bites between us. As

this was 'tiger territory' with one of Malaysia's highest concentration of

tigers, we were vigilant but there was no traces of wildlife except footprints

and elephant dung. Hornbills flying low were a sight to behold, especiallythe large Rhinoceros hornbills which made loud noises. Karen was awed by

    the vibrancy of the rainforest.

    15

4 Camp Kor, the first camp site, had one of the cleanest rivers around.

All through the five-day journey, we drank water straight from the stream.

The water tasted so good! On the first day, we were so tired that we slept for

14 hours to compensate for the lack of sleep on the train.

    20

5 Day two: Karen had a tough ascent as the terrain was steep and very

ragged at certain patches due to erosion and the uprooted trees. A heavyfour-hour downpour wiped out our tent. We relocated to a new site,

drenching wet and shivering with cold. But, Karen, so captivated by the

beauty of nature, was driven by a strong desire to make it to the peak safely.

    SULIT 119/2

6 Day three: We woke up to the sounds of barbets and cicadas and

knew that it would be our most challenging day. Another seven and eight

hours of hiking and we would reach the peak. The trek was tricky as the

muddy paths and thorns hampered progress. The previous night's rain created

water cascades along the paths and movement was difficult. Karen was

almost overcome by exhaustion. Thankfully, she held on and after a short

rest and a warm drink, she recovered. We reached the peak at almost 7 p.m.and camped at Bukit Botak which had an elevation of 1,943 metres. We had

a perfect night's sleep interrupted only by the wind.

    30

    35

7 Day Four: It was a beautiful morning. Clear blue skies greeted us.

The view was scenic though the haze was apparent. Karen was still in a daze

wondering if she had really conquered Gunung Tahan. We looked beyond

the peak and felt on top of the world. The air was so fresh and invigorating

though chilly at times. If only we could have such quality air, even in the

lowlands, every day. Then, it was time to make the descent. The trek down to

Camp Kor was exciting as we trekked guided by out torch. It was 8.30 p.m.when we reached the camp site.

    40

8 Day five: We boarded the train from Gua Musang to Johor Bahru. I

reflected on our adventure. It was a holiday as well as a learning session

where I managed to instill the love of nature in my daughter and heightened

    her appreciation of the environment.

Are You Still Playing Your Flute?

Are you still playing your flute?

When there is hardly time for our loveI am feeling guilty

To be longing for your song

The melody concealed in the slim hollow of the bamboo

Uncovered by the breath of an artistComposed by his fingers

    Blown by the wind

To the depth of my heart

Are you still playing your flute?

In the village so quiet and deserted

Amidst the sick rice fieldWhile here it has become a luxury

To spend time watching the rain

    Gazing at the evening rays

Collecting dew dropsOr enjoying the fragrance of flowers.

Are you still playing your flute?

The more it disturbs my conscience

to be thinking of youin the hazard of you

    my younger brothers unemployed and

desperate my people disunited by politics

    my friend slaughtered mercilessly

this world is too old and bleeding.
