BAT Studio

Between Art and Technology (BAT) Studio is an architecture studio founded by David Di Duca and Jonty Craig in 2012. Combining architecture and interaction design, the studio works in a variety of sectors ranging between new buildings, residential extensions, retail interiors, temporary experiential

installations and exhibition design.

The science museum re commissioned BAT Studio to redesign a christmas pop-up shop, in blue water

To create a more dynamic pop up shop in blue water shopping center.Further utilizing cable tray concept.Create a more economic shop display which is more sustainable and efficient.

The project was to improve the shop design and layout from the previous shop fit.Creating a more dynamic feel, and framing displays of chemistry sets and other science themed toys, both the decoration and the content of the shop complement each other creating a colourful and playful space.

A second key aspect of the store’s design was to utilize materials.Galvanized steel channel and cable tray carry the services throughout modern spaces. Although sometimes left exposed, the flexibility of the material offers much potential away from their designed purposes which is rarely explored which could be considered as ubiquitous components in the science of modern buildings but which are rarely elevated to be used for their aesthetics

Jason Bruges Studio, formed in 2002, design and build interactive installations that create innovative and engaging spaces which connect people with their

environment.

MEC commissioned project to design and build an interactive installation to celebrate

Cannes Lions Innovation festival.

The visual art piece, named EmotiCannes is an anamorphic digital installation made up of 180 small screens that, from certain vantage points, resolve into the icon of the

Cannes Festival of Creativity, the Lion.

Interaction

The art work is entirely bespoke hardware and software. The lion displays the emotion of the festival using data drawn in realtime from social media.the lion displayed data drawn from twitter which was anaylised by MEC which determined if the tweet/data was posiative, negative or nutrual. That wat then displayed as a colour creating a barometer to the amount of social media surrounding the festival. Aswell as giving an insight into the mood of the event.

The art work used 174 rasberry pi’s layed out to reprisent the Cannes Lion. Each Pi was linked into a web interface which was analysing twitter for key # and location check ins. Then from the words within the tweet determined wether the tweet was posiative, negative or nutrual.

The art work had live interaction with users. By having an instant repose to specific # tags users could control the lion with unquie animations displaying a users twitter hadle on the full spread of the lion. The lion also had a tracking camera that expanding a tweet. As an individual got close to the art work, showing details of the handler from the tweet.

MEC wanted to create an interactive anomophic sculpture. That could portray MEC’s market leading capacity to uncover real-time insights. Using one of several MEC - ‘its always on innovations’; Tasking vast amounts of data out of the computer screen into a intuitive visual installation

The 180 bespoke mechatronic ‘bubbles’ glow rhythmically in time with Mark Ronson’s track. Controlled with individual code, each bubble has eight polypropylene blades that fold intricately in on themselves. Special sensors embedded in the three ‘cheers in celebration’ kiosks at the base of the Beatbox detect when Coca-Cola bottles are clinked together, triggering the blades and bubbles to glow with red and white LED lighting. These light patterns become increasingly intricate as the number of participants grow.

The Interactive kiosks design concepts were he initially based around the unique shape of Baber Osgerby’s Olympic torch and the coke bottle. The final product was a combination of two concepts I proposed. The Coca Cola striped kiosk combined with the trapezoidal prism shape.

Scan Mobile” is a unique kinetic LED mobile that maps the topography of the space beneath it. The installation consists of eight nodes mounted on seven arms which collectively inscribe a 5m³ volume. Each node contains as illuminate a 10W Mini ZENIGATA LED from Sharp directed at the ceiling and a Sharp distance measurement sensor on the underside to detect objects underneath. A NEMA 17 stepper motor gives the structure gentle movement and in turn each node autonomously scans the vertical drop beneath it differentiating between floor, furniture and occupants of the space. There is a microprocessor determining the behavior of each node in relation to its surroundings. Resulting emergent choreography of the “Scan Mobile” creating a symphony of light, shadow and pattern on the ceiling.

Poppy Field is an interactive art piece as part of an open-air exhibition in London with BT. BT marked its 25th anniversary of ChildLine, with launch of open-air art exhibition in London

The BT ArtBox project had leading artists, designers and creatives transform full-size replicas of iconic Gilbert Scott–designed red telephone box into stunning artworks.

This project was a extremely fast pace. It went from concept to full working artwork in as little as three weeks.Inspired by the poppy red colour. The phone box was painted with over 200 LEDs projecting a poppy on to the box.The LEDs are crimped onto piano wire which gave each poppy the ability to naturally oscillate and sway with wind or air movement from people. The power was internally distributed by a mapped grid creating an intricate parallel circuit.

Publicity

The artwork gained a lot of public attention and featured exclusively in the telegraph, the guardian and Media Architecture. It was later auctioned off for childline for over £1000

Enfield Innovation

Competition

To design a entire Brand identity and stationary package for the competition. Co run by redLoop design and innovation center.

Designing a brand identity for the competition based on Enfields rich history of manufacturing and design. We where asked to make posters and competition packages that would be sent to participating schools around Enfield. The packages where compressed booklets that walked students through methodology used to generate unique and innovative ideas. We had to carefully design the layout and the experience a user would walk through within this booklet. Keeping the reader engaged by using info-graphics and inspiring activities. We had to ensure the walk through guide would get the reader thinking creatively. Leading the user to a conclusion. The package finished with the user finish having 3 fully developed concept ideas, that weren’t so obviously conceived.

Further work was done on publicizing other aspects of the event through posters, social media and the newly created website.

Ediswan took over the former jute mill at Ponders End in 1886 and adapted it for the manufacture of electric light bulbs and later radio valves. Why most design aspect will revolve around bulbs and filaments

Colour pallet was created from the Enfield councils commonly used colours

Inspiring posters, cards and info-graphics where created to publicize the 10,000 pound reward
