Both patients presented with the eruption 2 weeks after beginning treatment with a laxative containing dantron and sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate [docusate sodium] for constipation [doses not given]. In the 80-year-old woman, erythema extended down the legs and had a brown scaly border indicating an irritant contact dermatitis caused by faecal anthrone (reduced dantron). Author comment: ‘Irritant contact dermatitis may be an underestimated side-effect of danthron-based laxatives in those patients who are immobile and at risk of subsequent faecal incontinence. These potential cutaneous complications of danthron therapy should preclude its use in ill, bed-bound patients, or in children wearing napkins.’ Harland CC, et al.
