Principal’s Report

Congratulations to everyone for the smooth start we have had to the year. Well done to the 2018 Foundation students! They have had an excellent start to the school year. Over the couple of weeks, we have had many positive comments about their classroom work from visiting teachers and touring parents and families. The Foundation students have all embraced their new adventure with enthusiasm. Compliments to the parents too, for the way in which they have prepared their children for their first days of school. This collaboration, together with the work done by our Foundation staff have laid the foundations for a successful beginning to their school life. Remember, if you would like to discuss any concerns you may have or need clarification on what is happening at school or in the classroom do not hesitate to see your child’s teacher or make an appointment at the office. We have an open door policy and communication is the cornerstone to a successful home school partnership. A parent and students’ protocol note will be distributed next week so keep your eye out for this.

As part of the school’s emergency management plan we are required to practise evacuation drills and lock downs in case of an emergency. On Friday of last week we rehearsed our school’s lock down procedures. I am pleased to report that all went well.

Yesterday, we had a tree limb fall from a tree in the staff carpark onto the road damaging a parked car and blocking the road in almost both directions. No one was injured and the car will look brand new again once it has its makeover! Thank you to staff and parents who provided assistance.

Home Learning (Homework) The Department of Education and Training (DET) website suggests that is not necessary to assign large amounts of homework. Homework provides students with opportunities to practice skills, review content and deepen understanding of concepts learned. Homework and practice can also help students to develop self-regulation processes, such as time management and study skills. The current evidence and research shows that the quality of homework assigned is likely to be more important than the quantity. It is interesting to note that the DET website has removed any reference to recommended time allocations. The table below from DET describes quality homework practice for the different year levels.

Prep to 4 Can foster a sense of self-discipline and responsibility and prepare students for upper grades Enables the extension of class work by practising skills or gathering of extra information or materials Will mainly consist of daily reading to with and by parents/carers or older siblings.

5 to 9 should include daily independent reading Should be coordinated across learning areas in secondary schools to avoid unreasonable workloads for students. May extend class work, projects and assignments, essays and research.

All classroom teachers will communicate with parents/carers about the expectations for 2018. Our focus is on improving the essential executive skills such as planning and organisation supported by using a diary. Unfortunately, I will not be attending this week’s assembly but I encourage all families to attend as at Friday’s assembly we will have a special “artificial intelligence” guest attending. Come along and meet our guest. I think you will be delighted to meet them! Have a lovely weekend.

We have lots of happening at our small school, here is a brief run down to help families keep on top of it all ….

Our Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser is happening this weekend—Saturday 17th February. Please tell your relatives and friends to pop down to Bunnings at Hastings and buy a sausage and drink to support our school! Please keep collecting the Coles Sports for Schools vouchers. The more we collect, the more items we receive!

Breakfast club commences tomorrow morning (Friday) at 8.15am. Cooking will finish at 8.50am and last serve is 8.55am.

Please download our communications App called Flexibuzz. Lots of important reminders will be posted throughout the school year.

Western Port parade is Saturday 24th February! We hope to see many families representing TRSPS in the march.

Our Swimming carnival is next week, 21st February. Payments and permission slips are due tomorrow, Friday 16th February. We encourage all students to come along and dress up in their house colours and cheer for their fellow house members! This is a fun day out!

Our Kelly Sports Family Twilight Picnic is Thursday 22nd February from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. We are all looking forward to a fun filled evening. Don’t forget there is a free sausage sizzle and drinks and zooper doopers will be available to purchase.

Please ensure families do not park in the staff car park. It is a legal requirement from the Department that the staff car park is for STAFF ONLY.

Late to school—students MUST be signed in at the office by an adult. The late notice is then given to the classroom teacher.

THANK YOU!!

You will notice some works happening around the school. Lots of small but important maintenance items have been

taken care of recently. Look out for some major changes to our Play Pod area! We are very excited for what plans are in

place for our students. All these works would not occur without the generous support of one of our families.

We are very grateful to the Fredriksz Family for their continuous support for our small school. Thank you.

School Council nominations are open. If you are interested in joining our

fantastic team of staff and parents we would love to have you on board.

Together we can ensure our small school is the best it can be!
