Processing-structure and propertiesof Cu-Zr-Al bulk metallic glasses

Brij. K. Dhindaw* and J. Eckert**

Malaysia**TU Dresden, IFW Dresden, Institut für

Komplexe Materialien (IKM), Dresden,Germany

1. IntroductionBulk glassy materials have been definedthat can be obtained in glassy forms inthicknesses more than 1mm. This opensup their application as unique structuralmaterials for engineering applications. Therefore in the last decades, bulk metal-lic glasses (BMGs) have attracted consid-erable interest due to their superior phys-ical, mechanical and corrosion proper-ties[1]. Strength and the elastic limit ofdifferent materials have been shown inFig.1.

It clearly indicates that glassy alloys haveoptimum combination of strength andelastic limit. It has strength more thansteels and elastic limit as polymers.Nevertheless one of the main problems ofBMGs is still the very low plasticity atroom temperature. In fact, most BMGsshow very low plastic strain (0-2%) underuniaxial compressive loading or tensileloading at room temperature. If this couldbe enhanced one can get ideal materialswhere both high strength can be realisedwith high ductility. The production routes of BMG can bedivided into three different groups accord-ing to the state before glass formation, vapour deposition, quenching from theliquid state/deposition from the dissolvestate (e.g. melt spinning and metal mouldcasting / electrochemical deposition andsolid state amorphization reactions, e.g.ball milling. In the present studies indus-trially viable and less costly casting routehas been adopted. In recent years, researchers are interest-ed in developing BMGs which exhibit highglass forming ability (GFA) along withgood mechanical properties, so that big-ger size samples can be cast.

The main obstacles for bulk metallic glassto be used in structural applications are itslow plasticity and limited casting dimen-sions. It is well known that the plasticdeformation of amorphous alloys is con-fined to highly localised regions, the so-called shear bands [2]. Methods forimproving the plasticity of BMGs led to thedevelopment of BMG composites [3], inwhich the shear bands are hindered bythe second phase particles resulting inhigh strains to failure. The dispersed sec-ond phase being itself ductile and capableof strain hardening distributes the plasticstrain more homogeneously in the materi-al [4]. The precipitation of nanocrystals inthe glassy matrix [5], nanometre-scalemedium-range ordering [6] and phaseseparation in the glass [7] have been pro-posed to account for the enhancement ofplastic deformability. In order to clarify the structure–propertyrelationship in these metastable alloys, the present work reports the evolution ofelastic and tensile properties of(Cu0.5Zr0.5)100−xAlx (x = 5, 6, 8) alloysand the analysis of the respective fracturesurfaces. The BMGs not only show highfracture strength, but also exhibit macro-scopically detectable plasticity before fail-ure under uniaxial tension at room tem-perature. Without knowledge of tensileproperties it is difficult to decide thematerials capability to be used in structur-al applications.

2. ExperimentalHigh purity elements Cu (99.9 wt. %), Zr(99.99 wt.%), and Al (99.99 wt.%,) wereused as starting materials. Four composition (Cu50Zr50, Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5,Cu47Zr47Al6, and Cu46Zr46Al8) and 20(5*4) pre-alloyed ingots of 20 gram eachare prepared by mixing the appropriateweights of each element in the form ofsmall lumps for the desired atomic com-position. The small lumps of each elementwere ground on abrasive paper (siliconcarbide P-1100) followed by cleaning withalcohol and dried it to remove any trace ofmoisture. The alloying elements weremelted in arc melter (Edmund Bühler). The pre-alloy was melted in a arc melterand cast into 2mm*10mm*50mm platesby in situ copper mould suction casting

facility attached to the arc melter (Fig.2).Proper precautions and procedures werefollowed to make sure that no Oxygenentered the melting and casting chamberso that no inclusions are formed creatingnucleation sites. The samples were char-acterized using XRD, DSC, TEM and ten-sile testing were prepared from bulk castplate. Detailed structural investigations ofthe as-cast and the deformed sampleswere carried out by transmission electronmicroscopy (Tecnai F30) operated at anaccelerating voltage of 300 kV. The frac-ture features were examined using aHitachi TM 1000 scanning electron micro-scope (SEM).

3. Results and discussion3.1. Phase formationThe formation of glassy phase and theglass forming ability of the cast sampleswith the casting procedure adopted werecharacterized by the methods described inthis section.3.1.1. Differential scanning calorimetry For differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) analysis, several samples wereanalysed to enhance the sample repro-ducibility and for the minimization of theexperimental error. Fig.3 shows the DSCtraces of the samples having compositionCu47.5Zr47.5Al5, Cu47Zr47Al6, andCu46Zr46Al8 at a heating rate 20 K/min.The DSC curves show that each alloy hasan obvious endothermic event beforecrystallization demonstrating a distinctglass transition onset (Tg) shown byarrow in Fig.3,

It can be seen that the glass transitiontemperature (Tg) and the crystallisationtemperature (Tx) increases with increas-ing Al content. This shows that addition ofAl atoms stabilizes the supercooled liquidagainst crystallization and increases theglass forming ability. This is reflected in the increase of Tg with increase in Al con-tent.

3.1.2 X-ray diffraction

The samples for X-ray diffraction (XRD)were taken from the top, bottom and themiddle of the plates, thus ensuring thatthe whole area of the plates is analysedand compared. Additionally one XRD sam-ple is cut from the tensile fractured sur-face of the alloys, to investigate themicrostructural changes caused by thetensile testing of the sample. The XRDpatterns of the investigatedCu47.5Zr47.5Al5, Cu47Zr47Al6, andCu46Zr46Al8 alloys are presented in Fig. 4.

In the present investigation, the structureof the Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 alloy plate is influ-enced by the gradient in the cooling rate(i.e. lower at the top) inherent to thecasting process. However, middle andbottom sections show fully amorphousstructure.

3.2. Mechanical properties

3.2.1Ultrasonic testing for elastic proper-ties.The elastic properties of the as cast sam-ples were estimated using the ultrasonicsound velocity measurements. Themeasured values of density (ρ), longitudi-nal wave velocity (Vl), shear wave veloci-ty (Vs), Young modulus (E), shear modu-lus (K), bulk modulus (G), Poison’s ratio(v) and G/K values of Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5,Cu47Zr47Al6, and Cu46Zr46Al8 alloys aresummarized in Table 1.

The Young's modulus (E) increases withincreasing Al content. All BMGs have aPoisson's ratio (ν) larger than 0.31–0.32,the value, which is connected to a brittle-to-ductile transition for BMGs [8].

3.2.2 Tensile properties

Fig.5 shows true tensile stress versestrue tensile strain plots of Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5,,Cu47Zr47Al6 and Cu46Zr46Al8 alloys. Allthe three compositions show tensile frac-ture stress above 1600 MPa with fracturestrain around 2%. Small plasticity isobserved particularly in Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5,Cu47Zr47Al6, and Cu46Zr46Al8 alloys, fol-lowed by catastrophic failure (Fig.5 a&b).Cu46Zr46Al8 alloy was broken in the fullybrittle mode.

Fig. 5 shows the tensile stress–straincurves of alloys which elucidate the frac-ture strength and strain to failure with dif-ferent Al content as listed in Table 1. Itcan be seen that the metallic glassy sam-ples display initial elastic deformationbehaviour. There is a clear deviation fromlinearity accompanied by detectable duc-tility. Though the plastic strain is stillsomewhat limited (ɛp ≈ 0.5%, Table 1)the yielding phenomenon can be particu-larly seen for Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 andCu47Zr47Al6. The plastic strain decreaseswith increasing GFA and this might beattributed to the higher stability ofthe glassy phase. The fracture stress,, for the three specimens is above 1.60GPa. The total tensile strain before failureis about 2.0%. The data of these BMGsshow a clear linear relationship betweenfracture strength σ and E, (E/σ ≈ 50),which was predicted for other BMGs [9].

3.3. Transmission electronmicroscopy

In order to reveal the mechanisms caus-ing the rather unique ductility of the pres-ent Cu–Zr–Al BMGs, the microstructuresof the samples before and after the ten-sile tests were examined in the TEM. TheTEM image (Fig. 6) obtained from the as-

cast Cu47Zr47Al6 sample shows anisotropic maze pattern being typical of anamorphous structure. The selected areaelectron diffraction (SAED) pattern (insetto Fig. 6) is only comprised of a set of dif-fuse halos and there is no hint for thepresence of crystallites. This agrees verywell with the X-ray diffraction results (Fig.4). Yet, in some regions sparse nanocrys-tals with diameters of 2–5 nm were foundin the glassy matrix, which may be pre-existing nuclei remaining from the liquidduring rapid solidification.

Fig.7 shows the HRTEM image of the ten-sile deformed sample. At a higher magni-fication the bright and dark contrast phas-es become obvious and the dark phasecontains a lot of lattice fringes shown bycircle. Consequently, it can be assumedthat the sample partially crystallises dur-ing deformation and fracture. One possi-ble explanation could be the heat releasein shear band when the sample fractures.Second possible reason could be that theshear during deformation, changes theshort range order (SRO) in the glass andfacilitates crystallisation. Third reasonmay be the deformation induced transfor-mation, that has been reported manytimes in BMGs during compressive load-ing.

A TEM image recorded from the fracturedCu47Zr47Al6 sample is depicted in Fig. 8. In the case of the fractured sample, abun-dant nanocrystallites are distributedhomogeneously in the amorphous matrixwith an average size of 10–50 nm (Fig. 8).The micrograph presented in the insetclearly shows a contrast, which must beattributed to twinning. A strong interfacebetween the nanocrystallites and thematrix is evident. The nanocrystals can beregarded as a perfectly elastic body witha theoretical strength of σ ≈ E/10, whereE is the Young's modulus [10] and, thuscan serve as a reinforcement phase. Itwas generally believed that nanocrystalsembedded in an amorphous matrix canonly provide high strength, but not strainhardening owing to a lack of substantialdislocation multiplication, while the amor-phous phase generally even softens dur-ing straining.

3.4 Fracture surface SEM analysis:

The SEM observations show that theCu47Zr47Al6 alloy fractured primarily in ashear mode, as shown in Fig. 9. Thetensile fracture angle, θT, between thetensile axis and the fracture plane (asmarked in Fig. 9) is equal to 54°.

The typical fracture surface of aCu47Zr47Al6 sample is depicted in Fig. 10.Three regions with different morphologiescan be distinguished, corresponding todifferent stages of failure. Region (i) con-

stitutes a strip of approximately 50–100μm, which spans over the whole side ofthe specimen and is relatively rugged. This is where the crack initiates. In region(ii) the crack propagates in a stable man-ner and as a result the fracture surface isrelatively smooth. In this region, one canobserve features typical of BMGs, such asvein-like patterns (Fig. 11). These pat-terns are believed to form when the elas-tic energy stored in the bulk metallic glassduring loading is released as heat into thenascent shear band. This is a clear indica-tor for a shear-dominated fracture mech-anism [11]. Besides the vein-like struc-tures, there are round cores with radiat-ing veins on the fracture surface (Fig. 11).The fracture surface changes its morphol-ogy again as can be seen in region (iii)(Fig.10), which is extremely rugged andshows multiple smaller cracks

Summarizing the tensile fracture mecha-nism of these BMGs, it is clear that sam-ples having a high tensile fracturestrength exhibited fracture angles around54°. In case of low tensile fracturestrength the samples show rough fracturesurface. The rough fracture surface ofthese samples is believed to be originat-ing from the heterogeneously distributednano crystals. This has been supported bythe distribution of the shear bands nearfracture surface (Fig.12 inset 2).

4.1 Conclusions

The paper presents significant resultsabout the possibility of getting reasonableductility in high strength high modulusBMG. Tensile fracture stress of these

materials is very high (∼1600 MPa) andductility is up to 0.5%. A high resolutionmicroscopy examination of the fracturedCu47Zr47Al6 amorphous alloy revealedabundant nanocrystallites that had poly-morphically precipitated in an amorphousmatrix. The ability of strain hardening andtwinning are believed to contribute to theobserved ductility under tension. Theresults demonstrate that tensile loadingfacilitates nanocrystallization resulting inplasticity
