ABSTRACTSolubility of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) insoda lime silicate glasses was studied asa function of oxygen fugacity (-12 ≤ logfO2 ≤ -0.6) and glass composition (Na2O-CaO-xSiO2; x = 3, 4, 5 and 6). The fO2

induced several oxidation states of Cr fora given glass composition and at a fixedtemperature. The influence of glass com-position on the Cr solubility was interpret-ed in terms of the optical basicity concept(Ʌ). An increase in the melt basicity led toan increase of the Cr solubility for theexperiments which were performed underoxidizing conditions. The results provedthat the stability of Cr2O3 scale againstcorrosion was profoundly influenced byfO2 and melt basicity.

1.0 IntroductionThe biggest challenge faced by the pro-duction of glass is related to the lifetimeof the glass processing equipments whichare in contact with molten glass. Theseequipments are expected to have theability to withstand harsh environmentsand thus to resist high temperature corro-sion. Ni-based superalloys with highchromium content (25-30 wt.%) are thebest candidates for high temperatureapplications since they could develop aprotective chromia (Cr2O3) layer in hot air.It has been proved that this behaviorwould be also observed when they areimmersed in molten glasses [1-3].

However, the stability of this protec-tive layer in molten glasses, which ismainly governed by its dissolution, is oneof the crucial factors that determines thelifetime of these metallic parts.Furthermore, depending on the redox ofthe system, chromium can present sever-

al oxidation states (Cr(II), Cr(III) andCr(VI)) which have a particular behaviorconcerning the ability to serve as a pro-tection against corrosion [4]. Therefore, the knowledge of the physicochemistry ofCr2O3 in molten glasses could provide animportant understanding related to theability of these alloys to resist corrosion inmolten glass media.Upon a contact with molten glasses, thedissolution of Cr2O3 into Cr(III) oxo-com-plex will occur by following an acid-basereaction which is independent of the oxy-gen fugacity (fO2) (Eq. 1).

Depending on the oxygen fugacity, Cr(III)species can be oxidized to Cr(VI) (Eq. 2)under oxidizing conditions or reduced toCr(II) (Eq. 3) under reducing conditions. The aim of this work is to explore the

physicochemical behavior of chromium ina simple ternary system (soda lime sili-cate melts) by varying the oxygen fugac-ity (fO2) and melt basicity (i.e. glass com-position).

2.0 ExperimentalBulk amounts of homogeneous soda limesilicate glasses with general compositionNa2O-CaO-xSiO2 (x = 3, 4, 5 and 6) wereprepared by mixing an appropriateamount of reagent-grade Na2CO3

(99.5%, Chempur), CaCO3 (99%,Chempur) and SiO2 (99.9%, Chempur). After being mechanically mixed, the mix-tures were melted in a Pt-10% Rh cru-cible in air and subjected to the followingthermal cycle: 1200°C for 2 h, 1500°C for2 h and 1300°C for 10 h. The melts werethen rapidly quenched in air in order toavoid any crystallization phenomenon. The glass compositions were quantifiedby Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA)and are reported in Table 1.

Chromium-containing glasses wereobtained by mixing 5-10 wt.% Cr2O3 tothe soda lime silicate glasses. The mix-tures were finely grounded, heat-treatedat 1200°C for about 2 minutes and rapid-ly quenched in air. This procedure wasperformed two times in order to ensure agood homogeneity of the NCxS-Cr2O3

glass. Then, approximately 100 mg of thehomogeneous NCxS-Cr2O3 mixture weremelted again in a graphite crucible at1200°C for about 1 minute and rapidlyquenched in air. The sample formed aspherical shape with an average diameter

of 4 mm due to the low wettabilitybetween the melt and crucible. In order to control the different parame-ters in this study, (melt basicity and oxy-gen fugacity (fO2)), the experiments were

carried out in a closed system which wasestablished in a previous work [5]. Thesystem consists of a sealed silica tubecontaining several components whichallow controlling the experimental param-eters. The NCxS-Cr2O3 glass ball with therequired composition was suspended on aloop of platinum wire. In order to mini-mize the Na volatilization from the sam-ple, Na vapor partial pressure wasimposed around the sample by adding aplatinum crucible (Ø = 16 mm, h = 35mm) containing approximately 4 g ofglass which has the same composition asthe sample. The atmosphere in the silicatube was controlled by solid M/MxOybuffers (M = metallic element;Fe3O4/Fe2O3, Cu/Cu2O, Ni/NiO, Co/CoO,FeO/Fe3O4 and Fe/FeO) which weredetermined by using the Ellingham dia-gram. The calculated values of fO2

imposed on the samples are presented inTable 2.

The silica tube was then evacuated andsealed under secondary vacuum beforebeing subjected to the heat treatment atT = 1200°C, 1300°C and 1350°C for 2hours. The duration of the heat treatmentwas determined based on the kineticstudy performed in a previous work [6].In order to preserve the redox species inthe glass which might change with theatmosphere condition and the tempera-ture, the tube was directly quenched in airright after the heat treatment. The presence of both metal and oxidephases in the solid buffers was observedby X-ray diffraction (XRD) after eachexperiment. The distribution of Cr and theexistence of any phases in the melt wereexamined by Scanning ElectronMicroscope (SEM) by using BSE detectorwith an acceleration voltage of 15 kV. Theglass compositions and the total amountof dissolved Cr in the melts were thendetermined by using EPMA with accelera-tion voltage and beam current of 15 kVand 10 nA respectively. The spot size ofthe electron beam was adjusted to 20 μmdiameter in order to minimize the Navolatilization in the analyzed areas.

3.0 Results and Discussion3.1 Influence of Oxygen Fugacity (fO2)The influence of fO2 on the Cr solubility isdemonstrated in Fig. 1 where the totaldissolved Cr in NC3S at T = 1200°C hasbeen plotted as a function of fO2. Thecurve shows that the Cr solubility decreas-es from log fO2= -12 to log fO2 = -6, andthen begins to rise again at log fO2 > -6.The variation of Cr solubility with the fO2

reflects the change in Cr oxidation statessince the redox equilibrium expressed inEqs. 2 and 3 includes the O2(g) as a partof the dissolution/speciation reactions. Therefore, the significant region of solu-bility in the Fig. 1 is observed due to theexistence of different speciation of Cr inthe melt. Furthermore, the observationfrom the glass balls coloration (blue, green and yellow) proves the presence ofCr(II), Cr(III) and Cr(VI) respectively.

However, the experimental data in thiswork only reveals the variation of total

dissolved Cr in the melts. Based on amodel developed by previous work [4], atequilibrium the total dissolved Cr in theglass (Cr(tot)) is considered as the sum ofthe all Cr species:Cr(tot) = Cr(II) + Cr(III) + Cr(VI) (4)

Cr(III) content in the melts is assumed toremain constant with fO2 for a given tem-perature. This is attributed to the fact thatthe Cr(III) contribution corresponds tothe direct dissolution of Cr2O3 by followingan acid-base reaction (Eq. 1). Therefore, the minimum point of the plot in Fig.1 isconsidered as the contribution of Cr(III)in the melt. Under oxidizing conditions(log fO2 > -4), an increase in the total dis-solved Cr is due to the increase of Cr(VI)content. However under reducing condi-tions (log fO2 < -8), only Cr(III) and Cr(II)will be taken into account since anincrease of total dissolved Cr in the melt isdue to the contribution of Cr(II) content. These assumptions could be simplified bythe following equations:Oxidizing condition:

Cr(tot) = Cr(III) + Cr(VI) (5)

Reducing condition:

Cr(tot) = Cr(III) + Cr(II) (6)

Based on this model, it can be concludedthat the minimum point of the curve inFig. 1 plays a major role to the access ofthe different concentration of Cr oxidationstates in the melts. The anodic polarization curves (Fig. 2)which have been studied by S.

Abdelouhab et al. [7] could be used tosimplify the relationship between the Crsolubility and the behavior of Cr species inthe melt. The comparison between Fig. 1and Fig. 2 indicates that the lowest Cr sol-ubility domain presented by Cr(III) couldprovide a protective scale against corro-sion since the corrosion rate is muchlower compared to the Cr(II) and Cr(VI)domains which show a significant solubil-ity and higher corrosion rate in the melts.

3.2 Influence of BasicityAccording to Paul and Douglas [8] byusing an autoionization hypothesis, basic-ity of the melt increases with the increaseof alkali oxide due to an increase of theconcentration of non-bridging oxygensupon the addition of the alkali oxide. Todate, many models have been developedin order to determine the basicity of glass-es [9-11]. In this study, the basicity ofsoda lime glasses was calculated accord-ing to the optical basicity modelwhich has been proposed Duffy andIngram [12]:

are the fraction of oxygen atoms contributed by each oxide and are the optical basicity values of theoxides

The calculated optical basicities arereported in Table 3 for NC3S, NC4S, NC5Sand NC6S. Since the Eqs 1-3 include theoxide ions as a part of the reactions, therefore it can be of great interest to plotthe evolution of Cr solubility as a functionof the optical basicity (Fig. 3).

Fig. 3 shows that the Cr solubility increas-es with increasing the optical basicity forthe temperature range studied. Thisbehavior is in perfect agreement with the

results obtained by Khedim et al.[4] inbinary glass system. Since this reactioninvolves a multivalent element, anincrease in the Cr solubility with opticalbasicity could be due to the change in theCr speciation. The influence of melt basic-ity on the solubility of multivalent ele-ments has been studied by severalauthors [4, 13-14]. They have shown thata higher oxidation states will be stabilizedin more basic melts by taking into accountthe chemical bonding approach [14]. Byconsidering the Eqs. 4 and 5, it could beassumed that the Cr(III) - Cr(VI) equilib-rium dominates at a higher fO2. As a con-sequence, an increase of the total amountof Cr with the glass basicity for a giventemperature (Fig. 3) could be explainedby an increase of Cr(VI) species dissolvedin the melts since Cr(VI) is stabilized inmore basic melts.

4.0 ConclusionsThe influence of oxygen fugacity ( fO2)and melt basicity on the total dissolved Crin the Cr2O3 saturated melts has beenshown. The results indicate that fO2

induces the oxidation states of Cr for agiven glass composition and at fixed tem-perature. The Cr(III) content is assumedto remain constant with fO2. Under oxidiz-ing conditions, the total dissolved Cr inthe melts is considered as a contributionof Cr(III) and Cr(VI) whereas Cr(III) and

Cr(II) are the only species consideredunder reducing conditions. The Cr solubil-ity is also influenced by the melt compo-sitions in terms of its basicity.

These fundamental results allow correlat-ing the Cr solubility with the capability ofthe alloy to resist corrosion in the melts. The protection of alloys by Cr2O3 layerseems to be efficient if the melt behavesas a mild oxidant. Very oxidant and veryreductant melts will lead to a formation ofCr(VI) and Cr(II) species respectively, which are very soluble in the melts com-pared to Cr(III). The saturation of themelt is easily reached for Cr(III), therebyleading to a compact protective layer ofCr2O3.

1.0 IntroductionSince the evolution of black powder asexplosive pioneered by the ancientChinese, the blasting has evolved andbecomes popular as the cheapest methodfor deposits and mineral extractions.Alternatively, the explosive can be cate-gories into three main categories asdepictads in Figure 1.

Explosive is a chemical compound or mix-ture in which during the explosion creat-ing a very rapid combustion in which theenergy contained is released in the form

of heat and gas pressure at temperatureof 3000-5000℃. The gas pressure is alarge volume of gas released, enteringand expanding the cracks under highpressure resulting in fragmentation ofdeposit and in situ rock body.

Currently blasting is the most widelyextraction methods adopted in extractingboth the aggregates and mineral/oredeposit. It is still the cheapest and mosteconomical means of rock excavation andextraction (Afeni and Osasan, 2009).

Blasting operations reduced the sizeso that the blast and fragmented rock areeasily transported to another process. This process must be carried out to pro-vide quantity and quality requirements ofproduction in such a way the overall prof-its or quarrying and mining operations aremaximized while the environmentalimpacts are minimized.

2.0 Blasting Professional and TheLaw

The requirements and legal responsi-bility for shotfirer or blaster in any miningor quarrying activities is clearly stated inthe State Mining Enactment andMalaysian Explosives Act 1957 (Act 207)and Explosives Rules 1923.

While the Police Department and theDepartment of Mineral and Geoscience(DMG) enforces the rules and issues thecertificate, in the author’s concern, thereis no sole entity or department responsi-ble for overall blasting activities in quarry, mine site, public and construction blast-ing. For instance, as far as the PoliceDepartment is concerned, the onlyrequirement, besides security vetting, isthat the applicant must have a validShotfirer Certificate issued by the DMGbefore he or she is issued a permit to buyexplosives.

On the other hand, for constructionblasting work the operation is governedunder the Department of OccupationalSafety and Health (DOSH). Additionally, the blast designed includes the usage ofexplosive amounts is still decided by theshotfirer in which at the end of the daydepends on is competency and experi-ence (Sahari, 2014).

3.0 Blasting and EnvironmentalImpacts

Improper blast design and controlmay result in several environmentalissues. The most common are excessivevibration, fly rocks and air blast/air vibra-tions. Others type of impact includes dustand fumes. Flyrock is debris ejected fromthe blast site that is traveling through theair or along the ground. It is the singlemost dangerous adverse effect that cancause property damage and personalinjury or death. Fly rock can be cast up to600 meter from a blast.

Both the air and ground vibrations cre-ate waves that disturb the material inwhich they travel. When these waves

encounter a structure, they cause it toshake. Ground vibrations enter the housethrough the basement and air blast entersthe house through the walls and roof. Thevibration limits recommended by the DMGmust not exceed 5mm/s.

It is worth highlighting that currently, there is a numbers of damage criterionsemployed all over the globe. For instancethe German Standard (DIN4150) andSwiss Mining Standards (SN640 312a)which are comparatively more restrictedbecause of historical structures which arenot able to sustain the same level ofvibrations compared to other standard.

Air blast may be audible (noise) or in-audible (concussion). When outside ahouse the blast may be heard because ofthe noise, however noise has little impacton the structure. The concussion wavecauses the structure to shake and rattlesobjects hanging on walls or sitting onshelves. This “interior noise” will alarmand startle people living in the house.Structural damage associated with airblast (other than glass breakage) hasnever been documented. A recommendedsafe level is set at below 133dB.

Ideally, the gaseous detonation prod-ucts of explosive would consist of water(H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen(N2). Due to the kinetics of the chemicalreaction, the detonation of explosives in ablasting operation sometimes producestoxic nitrogen dioxides (NO2), nitric oxide(NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) (ISEE,1998). Some factors lead to excessive COand NO2 production are incorrectly formu-lated explosives (de Souza & Katsabanis,1991), the use of deteriorated explosivesand poor confinement (ISEE, 1998).

The concentrations ImmediatelyDangerous to Life of Health (IDLH) forNO2, NO and CO are 20, 100 and 1200PPM respectively (NIOSH, 1994). Majordust compliance problem in hard rockmines or quarry is generally caused by sil-ica (quartz).

It is worth highlighting that currentlyit is often happened that the expansion ofnew residential vicinity moving towardthe quarries and mine sites. In suchcases, most of the quarries/mines are fac-ing with disorders associated to the blast-ing activities such as ground vibrations, air blasts and fly rocks.

4.0 Alternative Non-ExplosiveTechniques Available

There are several other means ofbreaking or size reducing of rock.Nevertheless, most of these techniquesoften means for the secondary breakingoperation. The normal methods of usingrock breakers, rock splitters are availablebut still create impact to the nearby pub-lic or residents in term of continuousnoise and ground vibration over period oftimes.

In view of the above issues, expan-sive cement (non-explosive silent demoli-

tion agent) may be opted. This techniquerequires the drilling of boreholes which isthen filled with expansive cement mixedwith water at a certain proportion to thetop of the boreholes. The cement reactswith water and the mixture expands andexerts enormous stress (1000 – 3000tonnes per square meter) onto the rockand causing it to crack in several direc-tions (Sahari, 2012). This technique isbest suit to the area in which a blasting isnot permitted due to the safety issues andground and noise control. Nevertheless, this techniques is often time consuming(requires boreholes drilling) and costly.

Other techniques includes thepyrotechnics or propellant material suchas boulder buster where a cartridge ofpropellant material is inserted into a bore-hole filled with water and fired from dis-tance of about 20-25 ft. Since the usagesof explosive occur, this method requires alicense under the Arms Act 1960 andproper training to conduct this equipment(Sahari, 2012).

5.0 ConclusionsA competent and certified blasting

engineer is prerequisites in any quarry, mine site, public and construction blastingoperations. Nevertheless there are rela-tively few people involved in this field asit is considered as a risky job and to someextend received low incentive. Thus, amandatory regulation of employing certi-fied blaster in any blasting operations inline with attractive remuneration is highlyrecommended. It is anticipated that alongwith the advancement of explosives tech-nology, better incentive packages andenforcement such operation will be con-ducted in the safest possible mannerhence minimizing the environmentalimpact in the mining and quarrying indus-try.
