MAKLUMAT YANG BOLEH MEMBANTU Below is some useful information and other relevant details pertaining to your arrival. I assume that you may have already known about the necessary things to do prior to your departure from K.L, but I guess it is no harm if I provide you with some other useful advice. You may ignore some of them. 1. Planning for Departure (a) Flight Seating Arrangements Please ensure that you make specific seat request on your flight if you have not done so. (d) You may be familiar with the kind/type of houses in the UK if you have been here before. Houses here are in the form of 2 or 3 bedrooms, semi or fully furnished with gas or central heating, single or double glazing windows. You may have known that in most houses there is only one toilet. House rental is from GBP270 – 300 per month onwards depending on the conditions of the house. But to be honest with you now, the price of house for rent has gone up due to high demand and shortage of houses. A budget ofGBP300 or more should get you a nice house 3. Caring Your Health I believe you may be familiar with the British NHS system. On arrival in Manchester, your family are required to register with a local GP. This can be done after a few days here. For registration purposes, I suggest that you bring with you a copy of your medical check-up report (the one that you did in Malaysia prior to coming here).(X-ray tak payah bawa) and evidence that all your children have been inoculated/vaccinated for BCG, smallpox, Polio etc. Normally these evidences can be found stamped on the back of the birth certificates of each of your children. If you don't have them, it is all right. But if you do have this documentation, it will save you lot of time explaining to the GP the health history of each of your kids. 5. Banking Your Money

1. Planning for Departure (a) Flight Seating Arrangements

Please ensure that you make specific seat request on your flight if you have not done so. (b) Please label all your luggage. You will never know what can happen. You may wish to use

our Setiausaha address : Saudara Shahdan Sudin (118 Woodlands Road, Manchester M8 0NQ) . Tel: 0161-288-2156 or mobile 07751094384

(c) Luggage Priority Only bring necessary things. Rice cooker is very rare and very expensive. I strongly suggest that you bring one. If possible bring your note book computer along. It is still cheaper to purchase computer in Malaysia .

(d) Please keep in touch with us regularly (AJK Perumahan dan Pengangkutan) through e-mail on your house matter.

(e) The charge impose on you (will be collected by Bendahari and distribute to a respective person ) :

Transportation charge from airport to host house : GBP 10 per car Lodging at host house : GBP 10 per day

2. Living in Manchester (a) For your information, most Malaysian Malay students live in the Cheetham Hill area which

is not far from Manchester City Centre. (b) In the part of Cheetham Hill where we live, almost 75% are Pakistanis. There are about more

than 100 Malaysian families and undergraduate students in the area. Obviously, the Pakistanis own a lot of houses here and rent them to Malaysian, Indonesian and Libyans students.

(c) Halal food is only walking distance. No problem as far as food is concerned.

A budget ofGBP300 or more should get you a nice house

Page 2: Assalamu'alaikum dan salam sejahtera - …alaikum dan salam sejahtera ... If you have an account with HSBC in Malaysia, it will be much easier to open an account with HSBC here

Apart from showing your passport, as a form of identification, in opening an account, you are also required to show a letter from your sponsor confirming funding (guarantee letter form your sponsor) and the acceptance letter from your university to pursue your postgraduate programme. Please note, some banks especially ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND, NATWEST and BARCLAYS may ask for a letter of introduction from your bank in Malaysia. If you have an account with HSBC in Malaysia, it will be much easier to open an account with HSBC here (sila rujuk HSBC Bank di Malaysia berkenaan dengan perkhidmatan Global Acess dan caj yang dikenakan) . Please get an introduction/ reference letter from your bank in Malaysia. Initially, it is difficult to get credit facilities such as Visa/MC cards. You can apply them after staying here a few months. You should consider bringing with you at least one credit card from home.

6. Driving Around the Town (a) NCB - Car Insurance

If you are planning to purchase a second-hand car in the UK, it is most advisable if you can bring along a letter (To whom it concern, so and so has not making any claim for a period of x years) from your Malaysian insurance company showing the status of your NCB.

(b) Driving licence Please do not forget to bring your driving licence. If your driving licence is up for renewal, please renew it before coming here. It would be better to renew it for three years or more.

7. Schooling Your Children (a) Please bring along the birth certificates of your children to the UK. (b) The onus is not on you (or there is no need) to produce the birth certificate (BC) of your child

or the translated version of the BC upon registration. The school, however, may ask for them (original BC) or want to look at your/your spouse passport to verify your child's age. Some schools may not even ask for this documentation. They just take your words (based on trust) regarding the age of your child. There are quite a number of schools in the Cheetham Hill area. Roughly, there are about four schools where Malaysians send their kids. One school is within walking distance from home. The other three schools are about 5-10 minutes drive by car. Generally, most Malaysian parents send their kids to school by car. Some parents may have arrangement among them about taking turn sending/fetching their children to/from school. Older kids may walk to school. I hardly seen Malaysian kids go to school using the school bus.

(d) You need to be here in order to do the registration formalities. Normally, you need to secure a permanent accommodation (after getting permanent address) before registering your kids.

(e) In view that most schools start in early September, there may be limited spaces available for your kids if you arrive in mid-September.

(f) If your child could not be registered in the first instance (because of unavailability of space) at a particular school, you need to try other school until you get your child register).

(g) Do not be surprised if you cannot get all your kids to go to the same school. (h) Do not be alarmed if your children would have to spend a week or two at home, upon arrival

in the UK, if there is no vacancy at school. (B) MAKLUMAT AHLI KELUARGA: (1) Salleh Bujang
