Dear Elly,

How are you? I hope you and your family are well. I have been quite busy practicing for my school

concert, so I apologise for the late reply.

I enjoyed reading about wayang kulit in your last letter. I thought it was very interesting. In exchange,

I think I will share with you a part of Japanese culture that has become popular world wide – manga.

Japan is the birthplace of manga. Manga means “comics”. It is very popular here in Japan, not only

among children or teenagers but with people of all ages. This is because there are various of types of manga

such as science fiction, sports, fantasy, mystery, comedy and horror. Therefore, it caters for readers with

different interest.

Manga first began in the 18th century. However, it only became more popular after World War II.

People began to see manga as more than just funny stories but stories that dealt with many emotions. One of

the earliest and most famous modern manga was Astro Boy created by the late Osamu Tezuka, the father of

Modern Manga.

There are many manga cafes here where people drink and read manga and sometimes even stay

overnight! In 2006, the Kyoto International Manga Museum was established. It was the first manga museum

in the world. I have been there three times and still do not mind going there again. When you visit Japan in

November, I will definitely take you there.
