Saya champoh champoh, saya orang melayu dan orang german. Keluarga melayu saya tidak suka saya kerana saya tidak melayu tulen. Saya “orang putih.”

Growing up as a multicultural child, I often felt a sense of not belonging. The strictly islamic Malaysian side of my family often called me an “Orang Putih”- a white person, because of my German blood. The series “Photographs from an ‘Orang Putih’” emphasises this nostalgic feeling by deliberately having the subjects in my photographs looking away, almost as if I were not there. What I am trying to capture are elements of the past that still remain.

Ich bin mit zwei Kulturen aufgewachsen und habe immer das Gefühl ge-habt, dass ich nirgendwo reingepasst habe. Der streng religiöse, malay-sische Teil meiner Familie hat mich immer “Orang Putih” genannt- eine weisse Person. Die Serie “Photographs from an ‘Orang Putih’” zeigt meine Familie, die nicht in die Kamera schaut, als ob ich nicht da wäre.
