EFFECT OF PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION TECHNIQUE TO REDUCE OF STRESS LEVEL ANDBLOOD SUGAR LEVEL IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUSA Pre-Experimental StudyBy:Rufina Hurai

The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus is increasing from year to year. One of predisposing factors onincreased level of blood sugar in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is stress. The condition ofstress can increase blood sugar level through the increase of Adenocorticotrophine Hormone (ACTH).Stress management has a role in regulating blood sugar level. Progressive relaxation technique is one ofthe management of stress. When the muscles are in relaxed state, the lactic acid will be excreted throughthe bloodstream and glycogen, in the form of glucose, that is broken down into energy. The increase ofcellular glucose uptake by cells, can directly lower the blood sugar level. The purpose of this study was toidentify the effect of progressive relaxation technique on the reduction of stress and the decrease of bloodsugar level in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This was a pre-experimental study using one-group pre- post test design. Total sample comprised of20 individuals. The independent variable was progressive relaxation technique and the dependent variablewas stress and blood sugar level. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and the Pairedt Test with significance value < 0,05.Results data analysis showed that the stress level had = 0.000. Analysis of data obtained with the

Paired t Test revealed value = 0.000 (random blood sugar), = 0.000 (systolic blood pressure), = 0.000 (diastolic blood pressure), = 0,045 (pulse), and =0.012 (respiratory rate). In conclusion: the progressive relaxation technique can reduce stress level and blood sugar level of patientwith type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is suggested to PERSADIA to add activities, such as progressive relaxationtechnique, as an effotr to reduce stress level and blood sugar level in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The

findings of this study can be used as a consideration to modify the existing activities.
