SERI TANJUNG PINANG

Like a miracle emerging from the Andaman Sea, Seri Tanjung Pinang began as a vision. This year it celebrates its 10th Anniversary.

2 015 marks the 10th Anniversary of Seri Tanjung Pinang, E&O’s masterplanned seafront

development in Tanjung Tokong, Penang. When Phase 1 of the 240-acre development

was launched in October 2005, the market received it with an astounding 95 per cent

take-up of its debut offer––the Ariza courtyard homes. It was to be the first success story

of many to come.

The unique appeal of the Ariza was hailed as genius, a reinvention of tropical architecture

at its best – the Straits Eclectic style that works with the elements to create the best

conditions for island living. They were also the most expansive of terrace houses, with

built-up areas of up to 3,000 square feet. With common gardens and the cool sea breezes,

it is a compelling buy for the people of Penang who have never seen the likes of such.

The first batch of homeowners and investors at Seri Tanjung Pinang was not just Penangites

as most would assume. The development attracted the attention of buyers from Singapore,

Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Australia and the UK. Now, 10 years on, there are

more than 22 nationalities in the Seri Tanjung Pinang community!

In February 2006, the seafront bungalow parcels were offered to the market. At that

time, there were plans to also offer the kind of palatial bungalows along the prime

strip of seafronting land truly making them the creme de la crème of habitats at

Seri Tanjung Pinang. Martinique was eventually launched in December 2007 and was a

resounding success.

In June 2006, Avalon was launched, semi-detached homes with generous proportions as

befitting its E&O lineage, they featured tropical designs for comfortable resort living. In

addition to fine internal furnishings and high ceilings of up to 11 feet, Avalon buyers were

also buying into a community with safe and clean streets.

E&O’s achievements were not only in terms of selling a piece of property. “We have

broken the old, conservative thinking of Penang investors and buyers … made them accept

benchmark prices, which have been brought about by innovative design, so much so

that buyers today are starting to expect higher standards in the finished products,” said

Dato’ Seri Terry Tham, managing director of E&O Berhad.

Seri Tanjung Pinang was planned as a community with all the support conveniences close

by: retail, recreation, relaxation. Residents would enjoy a lifestyle where they can enjoy an

abundance of options for day and nightime.

At the time, a marina was already in the planning, as was a retail marketplace and water

promenade. All that came to fruition with the launch of Straits Quay with its cafes,

boutiques, marina and the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac).

Straits Quay was officially launched by the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng

in December 2011. At a ceremony held at its Promenade, the Chief Minister raised a Straits

Quay flag alongside the Jalur Gemilang and the Penang state flag and declared the mall

and marina open.

Straits Quay is the first festive retail marina in Penang and is distinctly located by the sea

within the world-class masterplanned development of Seri Tanjung Pinang.

Inspired by graceful colonial architecture of the iconic E&O Hotel, Straits Quay is home to

penangpac, Royal Selangor Pewter’s School of Hard Knocks (the first outside the Klang

Valley) and the Straits Quay Convention Centre.

One of the jewels at Straits Quay is penangpac. With its theatres, studio spaces and

galleries, it was the best equipped, custom-designed venue to have emerged in Penang. It

opened its doors on 11.11.11 at a glittering launch where the guest of honour was the Chief

Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng.

In the meantime, the complex that is Quayside Seafront Resort Condominium also emerged

as a bright new star on the horizon for Seri Tanjung Pinang. From the launch of the first

block till 2015 when the best and most exclusive tower, 18 East at Andaman was launched,

it has been three years of rapid delivery of the most desirable address in Penang, offering

unparalleled views of the Andaman Sea.

Within Quayside is a remarkable waterpark presenting 4.5 acres of fun, tranquility and

privacy for the residents of this condominium complex, a concept never seen before or

since, on the whole island of Penang.

Over the years, there have been steady launches of landed properties at

Seri Tanjung Pinang, from terrace homes to super semi-Ds, stately mansions branded

appropriately as villas by-the-sea and back to luxury terrace homes, the latest being Amaris,

which are 3-storey Super Terraces.

With the final tower close to being completed at Quayside Andaman, and foundation work

for The Tamarind––E&O’s latest and last high-rise project for Phase 1–– being in progress,

Seri Tanjung Pinang’s Phase I is almost a wrap.

As a community, the 10 years has seen the residents coalesce into a mini United Nations,

22 nations-strong living in a well-planned community where thought has gone into every

detail of its reclamation, construction, landscaping, mix of residential and commercial

spaces.

Its success has earmarked it into an example for many to aspire to. In the meantime,

E&O marches on with plans in place for the second phase of Seri Tanjung Pinang, with

reclamation work slated to commence in late 2015/early 2016. Indeed, Penang will have

another fulfilling tale to relate in the decade to come as it has for first ten years.

A well-planned and executed landscaped township gives it a sense of completeness

T he design and concept behind the greenery of Seri Tanjung Pinang is very much planned

and managed. The first impression striking visitors driving through the main boulevard

in Seri Tanjung Pinang is the majesty of the ketapang and khaya trees lining this conduit.

The original concept right at the beginning when Seri Tanjung Pinang was being planned

was to find the kind of trees with a look and feel that is consistent with the architecture

of the homes being developed here, which is modern Straits Eclectic. They also had to be

harmoniously extended to blend in with the overall streetscape and stretch to embrace the

promenade and waterfront into a cohesive whole.

Julien Hodson-Walker of Walrus Design, the landscape architects for Seri Tanjung

Pinang at that time shared, “Keeping in mind that the chosen species will be planted on

highly stressed land––reclaimed and land-filled land–– and can deal with the salinity, the

ketapang and khaya senegalensis were chosen to line the main spine of the masterplanned

development, giving a majestic feel to it as visitors drive along the avenue. Another tree

chosen for the main boulevard is the hopea odorata (chengal pasir).

To further augment the front liners, secondary boulevard trees were planted behind the

ketapang: planchonela obovate (boxwood), dalbergia latifolia ( Indian rosewood) and

terminalia ivorensis.

Furthermore, street trees were planted on the street kerbs for shade. There are also

greenery selected for the communal gardens for the Ariza Courtyard homes. Certain shrub

details were introduced to encourage residents to take ownership of the shared greens.

The whole gated, shared garden idea was inspired by Victorian secret gardens. It gives

neighbouring residents access and yet there is a sense of privacy and shared space.

Indeed, when one views Seri Tanjung Pinang as a whole, it is obvious that the lush greenery

fringing the streets and the gardens is conceived and executed like a well-balanced symphony

with all the various sections in perfect harmony and consistently rolled out throughout the

development. It presents the township as one entity with an overall character. And in this

respect, Seri Tanjung Pinang distinguishes itself from other developments.

CREATE, DESIGN AND BUILD

Julien Hodson-Walker is the landscape architect behind the identif iable design of Seri Tanjung Pinang’s streetscapes, helping it achieve a

coherent and consistent quality. He shares his story with E&O Edition.

Please share with us some background information about yourself.

I am a 60s child born in Burton-upon-Trent in the United Kingdom. I spent some of my

childhood in the Midlands before my parents moved to Cornwall on the southwest coast.

I went to school in Newquay where I surfed, rowed surf boats and was a member of the

British Surf Life Saving Association.

It’s strange looking back to see how childhood experiences and influences manifest

themselves in later life. For example, my grandparents lived with us for as long as I can

remember and my grandmother was an avid plant collector.

We had a large garden and a conservatory full of potting compost, root cutting trays,

tubs of powders and compounds of every sort and she was forever growing cuttings and

potting up plants; there was always something being grown. I’m very sure that’s where my

interest in plants originated from.

My father and my uncle ran a steel fabrication business building factories. As a teenager

I used to work in the factory during holidays and weekends; cutting steel joists, welding

plates and fabricating steel components - I loved it! I’m sure it was those experiences that

left me with an enduring desire to create, design and see things built, which probably goes

a long way in explaining why I chose to become a landscape architect.

I studied landscape architecture at Manchester Polytechnic (now the Metropolitan

University of Manchester) following which I worked at Lovejoys and BDP, where I obtained

my Chartership under the British Landscape Institute.

1992 was a challenging time in the UK. My job was secure but the work was boring so

when an opportunity opened up in Asia I took it. I arrived in Malaysia in 1993, intending to

stay for two years but the country endeared itself to me. A substantial part of my working

life has been in Malaysia working on Southeast Asian and regional projects and now I can’t

imagine working anywhere else.

What do you like best about life in Malaysia? And what do you dislike?

From a personal perspective I like the people, the lifestyle and the flexibility in all aspects

of life that Malaysia allows you. With the exception of the humidity the climate is great

and the country is a tropical oasis blessed with abundant natural resources. The absence of

British winters is a particular bonus.

From a business perspective the pace of work and speed that projects get realised is

incredibly rewarding; although when I first arrived a colleague told me that the pace was

unrelenting and he was right. I believe the lack of seasonal slow periods that winter brings

compresses the project repetition cycle and condenses careers which is why so many

professionals burn out or retire early then go and do something different.

What do I dislike? As a guest in this country I don’t believe I have a right to seriously dislike

or criticise. I’m very happy here. I consider Malaysia my home. Of course there are things

I find irritating but that’s the same anywhere in the world. I’ve been on both sides of the

fence and in my opinion the grass this side is a lot greener than most Malaysians realise.

From a business perspective the lack of skills and talent and a progressive creeping

deterioration in all round quality standards throughout the industry is increasingly worrying.

When did you start Walrus?

I started Walrus Design in 2000. The name is a mash-up of the ‘Walker’ part of my name

and part of my ex-business partner’s name. I suppose I’m a little altruistic in that although

I established the company, I believe companies are not about one person and can only

truly succeed as a coherent team of compatible people working together. For that reason

I never felt comfortable naming the company after myself, because in all seriousness, it

isn’t all about me. Walrus was conveniently abstract and unrelated to landscape to make

it appealing.

What are some of the landmark projects Walrus has done in recent years?

Obviously we’re delighted and proud to have been involved with Seri Tanjung Pinang from

the early days of the project. We were responsible for the overall landscape masterplan

and all of the landscape throughout the township, including the promenade, streetscape,

Straits Quay and Quayside, which I believe has resulted in a coherent, consistent and

immediately identifiable landscape character for the township. We’re currently working on

The Tamarind which is one of the last remaining parcels, so after that, who knows?

What are your dreams for Walrus going forward?

I probably have a maximum of 20 years work left in me (assuming I can keep my energy

levels up). I still enjoy what I do and never wake up fearing the day ahead, so as long as I

still feel like that I will keep on going.

Some of the talent pool issues I mentioned earlier have tempered my ambition moving

forward. I increasingly realise it’s impossible to grow a landscape consulting business over

a certain size and provide and maintain the high output level I aspire to.

We have built a fantastic client base of reputable developers from which we receive a lot

of repeat business. The focus now is maintaining my office at its current size (we have 14

full time staff) and focusing on quality projects with existing and new quality clients who

understand and appreciate the value in the service we offer.

A PREMIER PERFORMING ARTS SPACE

penangpac has become the more desirable address for the arts scene in Penang for just reason.

A modern township would not be complete with the right facilities so that the residents

live a fuller life. A great community is where the developer presents a performing arts

centre to its residents on a silver platter.

The Performing Arts Centre of Penang or penangpac, located within Straits Quay Retail

Marina is with its two auditoria, studio spaces and galleries, the best equipped custom-

designed venue to have emerged in Penang in recent years.

Curtain opening day was on the auspicious day of 11.11.11. At the glittering launch, the

guest of honour was the Chief Minister of Penang himself, YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng.

The Chief Minister’s hopes for penangpac are big. He likened its birth to politics, with all

the accompanying joy and tears but at the end of the day, “the show must go on.” As the

premier performing arts space for the northern region, it is hoped that the Centre will be

the incubator for regional talent and give birth to talent who will make their names and

fortune in the international arts scene.

Now, four years on, penangpac remains the preferred venue for many of Penang’s biggest

attractions: from concerts to arthouse movie screenings, musical extravaganzas to classical

theatre. And the top of the list for international acts making a stop in Penang.

A unique proposition for lovers and supporters of the arts in Penang, a comprehensive

performing arts centre in the salubrious locale of Seri Tanjung Pinang is just the thing.

Dr Graeme Guy, resident of Seri Tanjung Pinang and nature photographer extraordinaire, captures images of avian visitors to his

home garden and its surroundings.

M y wife and I moved to Seri Tanjung Pinang in August 2011. The development is on

mainly reclaimed land which is essentially at right angles to the iconic Gurney Drive. The

development is close to the forest-clad Penang Hill system and has a number of ecosystems

that attract a surprising amount of fauna. One of the nice features of the estate is the long

seaside promenade, which currently supports interesting wildlife.

Our semi-detached house has a limited amount of garden space that we have maximised to

attract birds. Currently we have recorded 20 different species of birds. Some research was

done to see what plants were needed to attract the nectar-feeders.

We have a covered third floor balcony where we have a number of the shrubs in irrigated

pots and some of these shrubs are planted at ground level and interspersed with colourful

but nectar-poor plants. One of the main targets for these nectar-producers were sunbirds.

There are at least three species in the area and the nearby Botanical Gardens; Olive-

backed, Plain-throated and Crimson. The Olive-backed seems to like human proximity and

we have multiple birds coming in daily. The males with their iridescent bibs are particularly

attractive.

We have had infrequent visits by the Plain-throated sunbirds and so far the beautifully

coloured Crimson Sunbirds sticks to the hills. Sunbirds are hyperactive and very small but

they are outdone on both accounts by Flowerpeckers. At least one species, the Scarlet-

backed Flowerpeckers, are intermittent visitors and difficult to photograph. They have a

rasping call reminiscent of scraping a nail on glass and appear to be in severe need of

tranquillising medication.

The nectar-producing flowers also attract Yellow-vented Bulbuls. This species is ubiquitous

in Singapore and Malaysia. Their secret of success is likely the amazing cooperation

between the male and female. They do everything together and work hard as a pair to

raise a family. You can hear them ‘talking’ to each other in various situations.

We have had an energetic pair around the house and in adjacent houses since we arrived.

They are constantly looking to build nests and do so swiftly and then incubate their eggs

diligently and feed the chicks rapidly to get them to fledge as soon as possible (as short as

12 days). On one occasion they built a duplex nest ... one above the other.

Another species that is always in the area but quite reclusive are Black-naped Orioles.

Attractive birds, they have various calls and come down lower in the trees to hunt for bugs

around dusk. They are aggressive birds and I have seen them destroy a sunbird nest and eat

the eggs. They are in fact the masked bandits they appear to be.

Another house bird with a penchant for eating fruit are Asian Glossy Starlings. They usually

hunt in noisy flocks and have a radar system that locates ripe fruit. We have several taller

trees that produce small red berries once or twice a year. The Bulbuls, Starlings and Orioles

love these berries.

There are several other regular or intermittent resident bird species. The Common Tailor

Birds are always around but I have yet to see their stitched nests. They are small birds about

the same size as sunbirds but tell you where they are by being extremely vocal. We also get

irregular visits by a pair of Pied Fantails with their characteristic twittering and beautiful

fanned tails.

Common Mynas are practically always around and like to bathe in water features and build

nests under the eaves of houses. Every resident will be familiar with the call of the Koels,

especially around pre-dawn hours. This is one species where the female is prettier that the

noisy male.

Most mornings we can hear the low frequency rumbling call of Greater Coucals. They

are a large bird of the cuckoo family and are predatory. They seemed to know where the

Bulbuls were nesting on one occasion and stole a fledgling chick from the nest much to the

consternation of the Bulbul parents.

There are a number of ‘true grassland species’ on the wasteland. Zitting Cisticolas...

zitting around in the warm days at the beginning of the year and Paddyfield Pipits striding

around on the grass and observing their territory from lofty perches. They build their nests

precariously on the grass but are hyperactive and doting parents.

Brown Shrikes are migrants and they stake out a piece of ground and swoop down on

insects from a raised perch. Munias gather in small flocks and eat the seeds from various

grasses. White-breasted Waterhens are relatively common in wet grasslands and we have

even had some in our garden in the wet season.

I love Bee-eaters as they are the colourful masters of flight and capturing insects while

airborne. There are three species present in greater Penang at certain times of the year. Two

species have been seen briefly on the estate; the endemic Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters and

the migrant Blue-tailed Bee-eaters. Both species have been sighted briefly hunting insects

from the trees that are at the edge of the sea.

I have seen four species of Kingfishers on the estate; the local species are the White-

throated Kingfisher with the azure blue and chocolate-brown feathers and the Collared

Kingfisher which appears to be more common.

Not to confuse matters I have seen two migrant species: the Common Kingfisher (which

comes down from Europe and the frozen north) and the sneaky Black-capped Kingfisher.

The latter species is very difficult to photograph and I swear they know how long your lens

is because they perch at a distance just beyond its capability.

One of the most anticipated annual events of STP is the New Year’s Eve Countdown fireworks at Straits Quay.

S traits Quay’s annual New Year’s Eve Countdown Party by-the-sea is a celebration much

anticipated by Penangites. This December, expect a night filled with exciting games and

sideshows, enthralling live music performances and tunes mixed by DJ Ramsey Westwood.

Various F&B outlets like The X-clusive, Winter Warmers, Spasso Milano, Full of Beans, Blue

Reef Fish & Chips and more will be extending their operating hours so that party-goers get

to fully enjoy themselves throughout the celebration.

Straits Quay is the only venue in Penang where you get to dance the night away to great

live music, enjoy the cool sea breezes amidst sparkling marina lights, culminating with a

spectacular fireworks display at midnight to welcome 2016. The very stuff to create new

memories from. A date to be inked in the final slot of 2015’s diary!

LADY MARTINA: WATER CONNECTIONS

An elegant water limousine brings Seri Tanjung Pinang a little closer to George Town.

L aunched in 2013 to ply the azure waters off the north-eastern coast of the Pearl of

the Orient, the Lady Martina is outfitted with luxurious comfort for guests of the

Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O Hotel) in George Town and patrons of Straits Quay,

Seri Tanjung Pinang. Its debut pays homage to Penang’s rich history as a strategic trading

port since the early 16th century.

The Lady Martina is named after Martina Rozells, the common law wife of Sir Francis Light,

the founder of Pulau Pinang. Sadly, throughout her 22 years as Sir Francis’ companion,

she was not accepted by polite Penang society as she was considered a half-caste by the

conservative British despite her royal connections at the courts of Kedah.

However, Lady Martina is credited to be key to the establishment of this key regional port,

“without whom Francis Light may never have founded Penang,” said Khoo Salma Nasution,

publisher, author and heritage advocate.

Hence in naming this elegant water limo after Lady Martina, Eastern & Oriental Berhad

pays tribute to this oft overlooked historical figure in recognition of the important role she

played in the founding of Penang. Apart from being Sir Francis’ wife, she was mother to

his four daughters and two sons, one of whom became the first Surveyor General of South

Australia and widely credited with the founding of Adelaide.

The graceful 15-metre Explorer craft which was custom-built in Malacca, cruises at a top

speed of 12 knots. Seating up to 40 passengers, she ferries guests from the E&O Hotel’s

private pier to the festive marina at Straits Quay at Seri Tanjung Pinang and vice versa.

Seri Tanjung Pinang’s Straits Green is a hotbed of community activities and events.

M ore than an expanse of undulating grass dotted with an urban gardening area,

playgrounds and jogging paths, Straits Green is a public space within the masterplanned

development of Seri Tanjung Pinang, for all to enjoy.

Apart from its 4-acre greens, water features and wet playground, gazebos, running tracks,

Straits Green is also the base for E&O’s Think Green Community Education Programme, the

driver of many fun and educational community events for the past two years.

Straits Green was officially opened by YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of

Penang on 18 August 2013.

Since its opening it has been the venue for numerous school outings by Tanjung Tokong

schools for various excursions, trips and events held within the ambit of Think Green.

It also went on to be the venue for many open houses during the festive seasons,

weekly Dancercise sessions and community programmes involving the residents of

Seri Tanjung Pinang, of the municipal flats in the vicinity and school-going children in the

Tanjung Tokong area as well as E&O employees.

The sessions with the school children involved those from the kindergarten to upper

primary school levels–– from SK Tanjung Tokong, Tadis Ar-Rasyiddin, SJKC Hun Bin and

SJKT Azad–– These young children were taught the principles behind green practices and

the benefits of urban farming, composting and even the dangers of Persistent Organic

Pollutants (POPs).

During these sessions, the children also learnt how to turn organic waste into compost,

grow organic food, build coconut husk raised beds and to identify different kinds of

insects. Most of these activities were done with E&O working closely with educators from

the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP).

The Chief Minister lauded the partnership and said “With the help of CAP, communities

and residents will learn how to compost and grow healthy food. Bottom up collaborations

such as these will empower communities to work towards a Cleaner Greener Penang.”

All in all, Straits Green is a green community space for all in Tanjung Tokong to enjoy and

to benefit from, an extension of the vision of Seri Tanjung Pinang to be a progressive

community and Penang’s most desirable neighbourhood.

A GRAND 130TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The Grand Dame of Penang hits a new milestone and the whole island celebrates along with her.

T he Eastern & Oriental Hotel, the grand dame of heritage hotels in Southeast Asia and an

iconic landmark in Penang, celebrates her 130th Anniversary this year.

In conjunction with this momentous milestone, the E&O Hotel organised a year-long

programme of activities for the benefit of the E&O’s regular guests, diners, heritage

activists and supporters.

The promotion which received the quickest response was the launch of E&O Hotel 130th

Anniversary commemorative stamps. All 200 sheets were sold out the day after the launch

in early October.

A philatelist’s dream, limited to only 200 sheets, the special edition stamps were available

to the public at the Bombay Shop located on the ground floor of E&O Hotel’s heritage

wing.

The stamps that were jointly created with Pos Malaysia, features the E&O Hotel 130th

anniversary logo paired with an image of a serene garden landscape fringed by local plants.

E&O Berhad group hospitality and lifestyle director Michael Saxon said, “These stamps are

one of the commemorative souvenirs we have specially designed to celebrate the 130th

anniversary of Penangites’ cherished E&O Hotel.”

E&O Hotel also plans to reward its frequent and loyal diners by arranging a contest for

them at Sarkies, Victory Annexe. From 1 September till 27 November, diners who spend

a minimum of RM500 nett in a single receipt were entitled to an entry for the 130th

Nestled in cosy St Mary Place is a sparkly little gem waiting to be discovered.

G LASS is essentially a modern European bistro, with a focus on healthy food and

innovation. Its focus though is good food, good music, good atmosphere... and of

course good coffee! E&O Edition speaks to Martin Haegar and Sharon Lam, two of the

partners behind GLASS to find out more.

Why the name, GLASS?

That’s what happens when you put an architect and a photographer together after several

beers. We wanted to create something less predictable and the name evolved more from

how we imagined the interior and the way which we might serve the food. We had ideas

of glass platters and food served in glass jars, such as our specialty sago puddings, panna

cotta and tiramisu.

The tag line, Tartines and Tipples, describes our signature dishes, variations on the

traditional French open faced sandwich and a drop of good wine or beer as a natural

accompaniment served in any good European Bistro.

Who is behind GLASS?

A Malaysian photographer, Sharon Lam and a well-known fashion guru together with a

British-born architect Martin Haeger and a Singaporean artist Peh Soh Chwee.

What does GLASS serve?

GLASS is an all-day dining bistro. All our tartines are served with unique dressings. For

example, our chicken tartine, which is served with a Thai-style salad topping, giving the

dish an Asian twist.

Our menu has recently expanded to include main courses like squid ink pasta and chicken

roulade. The coffee rub steak for example has been a great success, using our Highlander

coffee as a marinade to create a unique steak with a rich coffee and peppery taste.

Our signature dishes are vegetarian tartines: the pear and Gorgonzola is such an unexpected

combination of fresh fruit with melted cheese. Another good bet is the beetroot and goat

cheese.

We differentiate ourselves by the quality of our coffee. It offers a smooth 100% Arabica

blend roasted with a fine balance of Latin America, Central America, East Arabia and

Indonesian beans.

E&O Edition explores captivating locations aaround the world.

T he shapely mermaid rested on her elbows, her sunglasses-clad face tilted towards the

sun while her maker put the finishing touches to her tail. She was one of countless

masterpieces that sand artist Scott Dosch used to create along the Santa Barbara waterfront,

taking up to five hours to perfect each sculpture, something he had been diligently doing

up to five times a week since 1986.

For 15 years, the ‘Sandman’ was a permanent fixture at this picturesque resort town until

he was cited by the local council for silting a nearby dolphin fountain with sand. Dosch paid

the fine and upped his roots, though he occasionally returns to his familiar haunt and decks

the pristine beach with his striking works.

The Sandman may no longer be a Santa Barbara stalwart, but then again, his art had

always been as transient as the visitors who find their way to this American Riviera, so

named for its abundant sunshine and balmy climate all wrapped up in colonial Spanish

charm with the Santa Ynez Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. Known as one of the

most beautiful towns in America, this is where Californians go to escape from the frenetic

pace of Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego, and indulge in restful weekends filled

with premium wines, fine art, and luxury shopping.

From the City of Angels, it’s a 90-minute drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, a winding

thoroughfare that hugs and affords breathtaking views of the Californian shore as it passes

Malibu and continues northward. Once you arrive at Santa Barbara, the carefree sun-surf-

party town vibe mellows into a decidedly sophisticated yet laidback mood. The traffic

whittles down considerably, leaving the town’s palm tree-flanked boulevards mostly car-

free while its Mediterranean architecture stands out immediately with their white stucco

aesthetics crowned by red tile roofs.

Santa Barbara’s Spanish influences date back to the 18th century, when it was occupied

and Christianised as part of Mexico. Most of its original adobe structures were destroyed

in several earthquakes; the buildings that stand today were rebuilt while maintaining the

essence of their early beginnings. The town centre was modelled after El Paseo Complex,

where a Spanish street had been added to the affluent 19th-century home that is Casa

de la Guerra. Guided tours are available at this U-shaped adobe that walks you through

several rooms furnished to depict life as it was back then, along with displays of local

Hispanic heritage. The town’s history can also be experienced at Mission Santa Barbara, a

hilltop parish church that houses a museum exhibiting artefacts and art from the days of

the Spanish rule.

For most weekenders, it is the more leisurely pursuits that they seek when in Santa Barbara

and Downtown is the place to be. The main strip of State Street is populated by upscale

boutiques, and specialty stores are found at the many historic paseos, outdoor pedestrian

La Arcada is among the most inviting, with fountains and sculptures dotting its lush

garden. Bits and bobs of history are found at every corner: The clock fronting its State

Street entrance is a replica of a Chicago icon; the lion and castle motif on the entrance

arch were adapted from an original artwork that adorned the building; the Barber Shop

is both a working salon and a mini gallery of the decorative arts found across traditional

hair parlours.

If you are looking to drop some dollars, consider handmade French chocolates at Chocolats

du CaliBressan, vintage jewellery from Coast 2 Coast Collection, artisanal produce from

Isabella Gourmet Foods, and hand-crafted Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

at Sanford Winery. Hampstead Village is worth browsing through for its trove of fine

British goods: From books to traditional biscuits, whimsical Carter’s teapots to tableware

by Nicholas Mosse or Emma Bridgewater – there’s everything you need for a spot of English

afternoon tea and more.

There are as many restaurants as shops here, and many of them offer al fresco courtyard

seating where you can make the most of the pleasant weather while imbibing vinos from

Santa Ynez wineries paired with seasonal produce. Seafood is among the must-haves when

in Santa Barbara and the freshest catches can be found at its Fish Market, where local

fishermen sell directly to customers and cater to wholesale requests. The Santa Barbara

Shellfish Company has its roots as that, and has since expanded into several restaurants

specialising in crabs, lobsters and ridgeback shrimps. Their first outlet opened at Stearns

Wharf in 1980 and is still one of the most popular casual dining spots in town.

The Wharf is a landmark in itself, home to the Ty Warner Sea Centre (you can get up close

to live specimens in the touch pool) and a small cluster of shops. It is the views – of the

entire waterfront, with the mountain ranges in the distance – that bring people here,

especially in the evenings. There’s no better dinner to feast on than freshly steamed local

crabs and views of the ocean as you wait for the Californian sun to call it a day, and toast

to the American Riviera.
