INFORMATION ON EXAMINATION PAPER Code : 024/034 Marks : 50 marks Time : 1 hour 15 minutes EXAMINATION PAPER FORMAT The UPSR English 034 paper has three sections A, B and C which consist of 4 questions – All the questions must be answered

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE

Candidates are required to read the notes about the life cycle of a frog and use the information to complete the text given with correct spelling and grammar.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

Candidates were able to transfer the information by applying the singular and plural form from the non-linear text given without any spelling mistakes. For example, transferring “Female frogs lay their eggs in water” into “A frog lays its eggs in the water”. Example of Excellent Answer 2:

The candidates were able to transfer the information into a correct phrase to complete the sentence. Example; A frog lays its eggs in the water.

Example of Average Answer 1:

Candidates were able to transfer most of the information but were unable to apply the singular and plural form from the non-linear text given. Example; “…the eggs hatch become a tadpole”. They were unable to write the answers with correct spelling and grammar such as “the tail will disappears”.


The candidates were able to choose and write the correct key words as the answer. Example ; hatch tadpoles (key word). They were not able to use their own word to complete the answer.

SECTION B(i)

Candidates are required to study the information in the programme schedule given. Then, choose and list three types of news available on Channel TV5 with correct spelling and punctuation.

Example of Excellent Answer:

Candidates were able to list the types of news available based on the given programme schedule correctly with accurate punctuation and spelling. Eg. “Sports News” instead of “sports news”, “World News” instead of “Word New”. Example of Average Answer:

Candidates did not follow the instructions given. They listed other programmes instead of types of news. Eg. “Negaraku”, “Hindi Hits” instead of “World News” and “National News”.

SECTION B(ii)

Based on the programme schedule given, the candidates are required to choose two programme that they would like to match and give a reason for each of their choice. Candidates should write their answer between 50 and 80 words. The answer should be structurally and grammatically correct.

Examples of Excellent Answer 1:

Candidates were able to follow the instructions given by choosing two programmes which they like from the given programme schedule and give logical reasons for their choices. Candidates were also able to write their answers using interesting expressions with hardly any mistakes. Eg. “the characters in the cartoon are funny”, “about three bosom friends who are cowboys” and “very adventurous and interesting”.

Examples of Excellent Answer 2:

The candidates were able to give reasons for the selected two programmes each with correct sentences. Example ; I like this programme because it will make children laugh and make them happy. Example of Average Answer 1:

Candidates were able to follow the instructions given by choosing two programmes which they like from the given programme schedule and give reasons for their choices. However, the candidates’ answers contained multiple grammatical and structural errors. Eg. “So that, we can knows about National things aroud us”, “If I do know what it speak…” and “…we can enjoy see the cartoon”

Candidates are required to write a story based on the given picture. Candidates may use the words given to help them to write the story in the space provided. Candidates are required to write the story between 80 and 100 words. The story should be written with correct grammar, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation in paragraphs. Candidates are required to begin the story with :

The candidates were able to use all the helping words given to craft a story based on the picture. The ideas were well planned in the story with many new words used to make the story interesting. Example ; destination, belongings, hesitation, tourist

Candidates were able to understand the task given but unable to write correct sentences due to multiple grammatical errors such as “They prepare food, drinks and shirt at the morning.”, “At 8.00 morning…”, and “2 Hour Later, They…” and structural error such as “Mr Lee use his car to drive his family go to beach.”.

SECTION C QUESTION 2

Candidates are required to write a story based on the pictures given. Candidates may use the words given to help them to write the story in the space provided. Candidates are required to write the story between 80 and 100 words. The story should be written with correct grammar,spelling,sentence structure and punctuation in paragraphs. Example of Excellence Answer:

The candidates were able to plan their writing in a smooth continuous flow with expressive words, adjectives and varieties of sentences. The candidates were able to write with hardly any structural, grammar or spelling errors like “intruction" instead of “instruction”. The writing was well-crafted and was able to capture readers’ attention.

Example of Average Answer:

The candidates were able to sequence their ideas with the helping words given in simple sentences. A little confusion in usage of the vocabulary in the sentence. Example ; spilt the petrol into the water and fire the water.

SUGGESTIONS TO CANDIDATES 1. Read more English materials to maintain a high level of English proficiency. 2. Watch English programmes on television such as documentaries, news and children

educational series. 3. Read the instructions carefully and understand the task given. 4. Play language games to enjoy learning the language.

SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS 1. Teach all the skills listed in the syllabus and make full use of the Year 4, 5 and 6

textbooks. 2. Encourage students to use the language widely in their everyday activities for

example converse with teachers and peers in English. 3. Make sure that the students have mastered the vocabulary listed in the DSKP. 4. Create meaningful English environment inside and outside the classroom. 5. Plan student-centred English learning which is fun and interesting. 6. Be a good role model in using good English and encourage students to do so as

well.
