    Any one who has in his possessionmore than equivalent of the value of

    85 gm gold or 634gm of silver ,over

    and above his living expensesOn agricultural produce zakatis

    payable if the value of crop is more

    than 3265kg of wheat, rice or corn(popular grain)

    Alms are only (exclusively) for the poor and the

    needyand those employed to administer, and thosewhose hearts are to be reconciledand to free the

    captives and those in debtand in the way of Allah

    and the wayfarera duty imposed by Allah and Allah

    The operative criteria which determines povertyis not how little a person has, but whether it isenough or not

    Basic need includes food & clothing for theperson and his family as well as reasonable

    accommodation and furniture and necessarytools for his trade and means of transportation

    Richness means owning what is enough forones need; A person in need qualifies as poor &

    needy

    Al Baqra

    Allahdeprives Interest of all blessing and

    develops Charity, and Allah does not like an

    ungrateful, sinful person. As to those who believe

    and do good deeds, establish Salatand pay

    Zakat, they will most surely have their reward

    with their Lord and they will have nothing to fear

    nor to grieve.

    It is no virtue that you turn your faces towards

    the east or the west, but virtue is that one shouldsincerely believe in Allahand the Last Day and

    the Angels and the Book and the Prophets and,

    out of His love, spend of one's choice wealth for

    relatives and orphans, for the needy and thewayfarer, for beggars and for the ransom of

    slaves, and establish Salatand pay Zakat. And

    the virtuous are those who keep their pledges

    when they make them and show fortitude inhardships and adversity and in the struggle

    between the Truth and Falsehood; such are the

    Truthfulpeople and such are the Pious

    Surah Tuba

    & those who hoard up gold & silver & do not

    spend in the way of Allah,proclaim a grievous

    punishment, on the day when it (horded

    wealth) shall be heated in the fire of Hell,thentheir foreheads & their sides& their backs

    shall be branded with it, this is what you

    hoarded up for yourself,now taste what you

    horded

    Hadith on Punishment

    for not Paying Zakat

    Narrated by Abu Huraira

    Whoever is made wealthy by Allahand does not pay the Zakatof hiswealth then on the Day ofResurrection his wealth will be madelike a bald-headed poisonous malesnake with two black spots over theeyes. The snake will encircle his neck

    and bite his cheeks and say, I amyour wealth, I am your treasure,

    w il l be deprived of rain, un less they get it only fo r the sake of

    their catt le.If they renou nce their comm itment to Al lah and

    His Messenger, they w il l be governed by an enemy w ho is astranger to them and who wi l l take away some of what they

    possess. If the ir ru lers do not ru le accord ing to Al lah 's Book ,

    they w il l be aff l ic ted b y c iv i l war. Al lah fo rbid that these

    shou ld happen to you ."
