TWO KINDS
I have chosen two kinds story. This story has a very interesting storyline. Author
of this story is Amy Tan. The story is about a relationship between a mother and adaughter. The story's main events take place in Chinatown throughout the 1950s and
perhaps early 1960s. The main character of the story, who is also the protagonist, is the
author herself: Amy Tan. The antagonist happens to be her own mother, who is always
pushing Amy to discover some hidden talent and be someone she is not. There are a
few other minor characters in the story. There is Lindo Jong (who she calls Auntie
Lindo), who is a close friend of Amy's mother. Waverly Jong is Auntie Lindo's daughter,
who is close to Amy's age. Amy's piano instructor, who she dubs "Old Chong", plays a
small role in the story. Amy's dad is included in the text, but does not play much of a
role.
The plot of a story has six key parts that are normally sequential. A story begins
with an exposition, and follows with rising action. Next is some sort of conflict which
usually results into the climax of the story. Climax can be defined as "a moment of great
or culminating intensity in a narrative or drama". . Some sort of falling action occurs
next, which finally ends the story with a resolution. In the story, “Two Kinds”, Amy Tan
writes about a relationship between a mother and a daughter. The mother of Jing-mei
wants her daughter to become famous, but Jing-mei just wants to be herself. Tan writes
about two songs played by Jing-mei, “Perfectly Contented” and “Pleading Child.” In the
story the faster and aggressive song, “Pleading Child”, best represents the mother, and
the slower happier song, “Perfectly Contented”, represents Jing-mei.
Amy’s was happy just being herself, but, unfortunately, her mother expected
more. Amy’s mother pushed her to become famous. She thought that was what’s best
for Amy’s. “Just like you,” she said, “Not the best because you are not trying.” She tried
everything in her power to make Amy talented in some way. She pushes Amy’s right
over the edge.

Amy’s soon found her true, aggressive nature. Everytime her mother snapped at
her to try harder, she snapped back. “For unlike my mother, I did not believe I could do
anything I wanted to be. I could only be me. Because of Amy’s different view she and
her mother began to fight a lot. The greater they disputed, the farther away they drifted.
Until they realized the piano wasn’t only the root of their problems, but the so lution as
well.
After Amy’s mother dies, in the end, she went back to the piano. Amy’s began to
play the song that caused the breaking point of her relationship with her mother. Then
she played the song next to it with great satisfaction. “And after I played them both a
few times, I realized they were two halves of the same song.” Like the ying-yang and
the songs, Amy’s relationship with her mother may seem disastrous and apart, but
together they share a strong bond that makes them whole.
After reading the above summary, we get a pretty good idea of what Amy's story
is about and the theme behind it. She regrets not trying her best, and the way she has
taken her mother for granted in her life. A strong message like this makes us reflect on
our own lives and relationships with the ones we love. Amy constructs the story in a way
that makes the plot flow, and we are interested in what will happen to her next. Some of
us may even feel like she is too hard on the protagonist-her mother. The ending
resolves these feelings, because we discover she feels this, too. The main characters
are important in the events that unfold in the story. Without Auntie Lindo, for example,
her mother may not have been so compelled to see Amy excel. These elements, and
the way the author has combined them, build an interesting story that makes us reflect
upon our own lives, as well.
The mother's ambitions for her child take shape one night while watching a nine
year old Chinese girl play the piano on the Ed Sullivan show. The mother quicklyarranges for piano lessons. The daughter lies about practice times and does only what
she has to do during the lessons. Her mother is unaware of her lack of participation.
At the piano recital, the child is confident and proud when it is her turn. However, her
awful and unpracticed playing embarrasses her family as well as herself. The mother
insists on continuing piano lessons and literally has to drag the child to the bench to

play. The child continues the rebellion and goes so far as to say she wished she were
not her mother's child. The cruel and hurtful statement silences her mother and piano
lessons cease. On the narrator's thirtieth birthday, the mother offers to give her the
piano, who interprets is as a peace offering, although she is still unable to comprehend
her mother's motivations.

CONCLUSION
This story is the story of a mother who is too controlling the life of her daughter
Jing-May. In addition, the mother put too high expectations of her, forcing her melakukakn something that does not interest her. As a result of coercion and insistence
of his mother, Jing-May to rebel and fight against mother's wishes because he felt he
was entitled to make their own choice. At first her mother's rhythm as he was confident
would be successful if in accordance with his mother. However, over time her feel
depressed because they could not meet capital requirements. The stress caused her
mother to fight and reject commands. Finally, they argue about life choices. Jing-May
feels he is entitled to choose his own life to succeed.
In my opinion, the lessons from this story is that parents can not control their
children's lives. Instead parents can only guide their children to the right and opportunity
to their children to make decisions and choices of their own lives. If parents are too
demanding, children will rebel and feel too controlled and not free to make their own
choice. But the seriousness mother Jing-May show is very good and should be praised
because he was trying to give the best education for her son. As parents of course want
something that is best for their children. How mothers Jing-May compel her by will are
incorrect. Mother should have the opportunity to Jing-May to make choices in areas of
interest.
Each child has a tendency of interest and their respective and distinct. The role
of parents is to guide them to make choices. After their children make their preferred
choice, parents should provide support to their children. Children who enter the field of
interest and parental support are more successful than children who are forced to follow
their parents' choice. Sometimes parents do not meet the preferred interest children
cause they did not try very hard. Therefore, parents play an important role in the lives of
their children. Children will be more excellent if venturing into the area of interest.
