Question 1

Read the following text and complete the given task.

Green plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As a result of photosynthesis,

the carbon of the carbon dioxide is built into a carbohydrate and some of these are changed into

the various compounds of a plant. When the plants are eaten by animals, the organic compounds

or plant material is digested, absorbed and converted into animal tissues.

Plants and animals then, obtain energy by oxidizing the carbohydrates in their cells and in

the process, release carbon dioxide and water back into the atmosphere. This process is called

respiration. When the plant or animal dies, the organic matter of dead plants and animals is used

by saprotrophs such as bacteria and fungi as a source of energy. The plant and animal remains

are decomposed and their carbon compounds are turned into carbon dioxide which is once again

returned to the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide is also released into the atmosphere through combustion. Ancient

prehistoric plants form deposits of coal, petroleum and natural gas and when these hydrocarbon

fuels are burnt, the carbon is oxidized to carbon dioxide which goes back into the atmosphere.

Hence, an atom of carbon which is in a molecule of carbon dioxide today, may be in a moleculeof plant tissue tomorrow. And the cycle goes on.

Question 2

Read the following text and complete the given task.

People with severe facial burns or whose face have been mutilated in accidents or mauledby dogs, can now have a second chance at a normal life through face transplants. The only

concern in these operations is the ability of the patient to withstand the psychological trauma of

having his new face resembles that of the donor s.

Recently, a team of British surgeons worked on the face transplant on a man with severe

facial burns. The patient first underwent psychological screening to find out how well he has

coped with his original disfigurement.

Having passed his test, he was then scheduled for an operation. Two teams of surgeons

applied their skills during the 14-hour operation. The first team removed the skin grafts, nerves,

underlying fat and blood vessels from the face of the patient. The second team removed the face

of the donor with its underlying fat and blood vessels. The donor s face was then kept on ice,

transported to the patient and sutured into place. The transplanted face was actually stretched

over the patient s bone structure and facial muscles.

After the procedure, the patient was monitored closely and administered with

immunosuppressant drugs to suppress the patient s own immune systems and prevent rejection.

The surgery may also result in complications such as infections that would turn the new face

black and require a second transplant or surgery.
