ً َ زِي No doubt We made whatever is on the Earth beautiful (made it beautification itself) for it so we can test them

ً َ is an idea زِي – so you don’t look at a car and say the car is beauty. You say the car is beautiful.

So here it would have been muzayyana – beautified

But using ً َ .itself is the idea of beauty itself زِي Allah is saying whatever He made on this Earth is actually the framework for which you can

perceive beauty. There is no concept of beauty outside of what Allah made

    َ ّ

    – for what? For the Earth

The things that attract us on the Earth are only really truly beautifully on the Earth. Its beauty is

    limited to here

[Surah Najm: 29- 30] Leave the one who forgot about remembering Us and didn’t wantanything but worldly life. That is the hi ghest point they’re going to reach as far asknowledge. Their knowledge and perception won’t go any further.

The Human’s Quest for Beauty For a species to survive on this planet, it needs certain essentials: food, shelter, the ability to procreate to

continue its generations, etc.o These are fundamental needs of any living species on this Earth with no exception to human beings.

However, hu man beings have this additional need that other species don’t have.o That is the quest for beauty.o The quest for finding things that are beautiful: clothes, a spouse, speech, poetry, art, cities, scenery,

architecture, food.o Other species don’t need this beautification.o We want ourselves to be beautified and things around ourselves to be beautified – unlike any other

species. This beautification is for everything in our life. Why did Allah put that in us? What is some of the wisdom in injecting this virus inside the human being? The

constant search for beauty and something beautiful?

We were in the presence of Allah swt before we were brought on this Earth. We engaged in directconversation with Allah swt. This is the Islamic Creed articulated in Surah A ’raf.

After you’ve spoken to Allah and been in His presence, then you could argue that you have experienced theultimate form of beauty. There is nothing more beautiful than that. The company of Allah. All beautyemanates from Allah and you were in His company.

o So you are in the presence of perfection and then from that perfection Allah used an angel to deliveryou into the belly of your mom and then you were born onto this Earth.

o But there’s a spiritual memory and there’s a physical memory. The spiritual memories are actually called upon to remember spiritually the covenant thatthey made with Allah, the fitra. That is a spiritual pre-programming. In that memory andsubconscious, we were in the presence of perfection and the ultimate beauty.

Human beings therefore keep searching for beautiful things because once they tasted thatbeauty they want to get it back. That’s why we constantly want to make everything aroundus more beautiful.

This idea of pursuing more and more beauty in everything, is originally a spiritual thing. Some people realize this and that our desire for beauty in this world is somethingtranscendent and above everything around us. We have something higher to work towards. But most people stay stuck on what is in this world.

We get caught up in the beauty in this world and we make it into our goal. That is actuallyAllah’s test.

There’s nothing wrong with worldly goals but they have to be a means to a higherend. They must lead to something more.

And by thet definition of beauty, when you get to it, you are not satisfied. There isalways something more to look for. That never ending thirst for beauty should initself make you internalize that there is something perfect and timeless that youmust seek to find satisfaction. Otherwise you will never find it.

Everything of beauty has been tested and acquired by humans but there is always agaping hole left

    This is

    ْ

    ُم

    َ

َِ – so we can put them to a serious test

o Which of them are better when it comes to actions – which of them putthemselves to work.

    ُ َ َْح

    o Could have used khayr

    o But a7san actually comes from the origin ofُ َ ْح

and has to do with beauty itself.

o Allah made the world outwardly beautiful so He could see who does more truly beautiful things interms of their actions.

Burhan Al-Deen Al- Biqa’ai (A Mufassir) Allah explained His reasons for why people are turning away from the Prophet (pbuh) because the Prophet is

not capable to control them but all he can do is spread the message to them by giving them good news andwarnings.

Allah is letting His Messenger know that the Prophet (pbuh) cannot ever make anyone believe and cannot makeiman enter into anyone’s heart. It will only come into somebody’s heart by only Allah’s will. For most peoplewho will not pass this test Allah will decide not to give them this iman

Ibn Ashoor This is a consolation and comforting to the Prophet (pbuh) because of the deliberate ignoring of the disbelievers

of the Prophet’s (pbuh) call even though Allah has given them extra time. And He has gi ven them good beautifulthings to enjoy in life so that hopefully they can be grateful to Him.

But they have violated those blessings and haven’t been able to appreciate them so Allah has decided to take allof those blessings away from Quraish and He would turn their lands into a fruitless, barren place.

Ibn Ashoor is saying the next ayah 8, ا

Surah Kahf: 8], means that Allah is going to] وtake this Earth and make it a barren land for Quraish because they didn’t appreciate Allah’s gift to them.

o He is arguing that the Prophet (pbuh) made a dua’a that is related in the Tafseer of Surah Dukkhaan, “yaAllah give the Quraish a taste of difficulty like the drought years of Yusuf ‘alayhi alsalam so that wouldhumb le them.”

So then a smoke cloud covered the entire city of Makkah for a long time. There was absolute famine, no clean water, animals died, no milk of animals. Things became

desperate people were rationing bones of dead animals and sucking on them for a while. Things got so bad they went to the Prophet (pbuh) and asked for relief from that punishment So ayah 8 is referring to Quraish going through this severe trial

    Abu Zahra says

There is a transition from spiritual food to physical beauty. The spiritual beauty of this life is the Book and thegood news and warning. But Allah says this world is not just to feed your spiritually but also physically. And that

    isض ر ة ن ي ز

What is the connection of this ayah with the ayaat before it?

The purpose of the entire first passage was consolation to the Prophet (pbuh). The Messenger is being told thatall his concerns have been addressed because he has been given the perfect book. Not only is it handling what

he was going through but it will stand tall even in the worst س .of Dajjal ب Then he is told the Prophet (pbuh) do not kill yourself in grief because the Prophet keeps questioning who will

take care of humanity and the future generations.

o Quran and Allah will take care of humanity. He has been given this kind of relief in ayah 6 - ك ل ع Now that he has been relieved, Allah mentions something harsh

o Whatever we made on this earth no doubt is to beautify this earth so that we can test them.o The messenger is worried about those who will fail the test. Allah is telling His Messenger, whether

you’re worried or not the test will happen that is a reality and some people will fail and some will pass.o Earth was designed to test humanity and eventually it’ll come to an end and it will be reduced to

nothing. Some people will fail and some people will pass.o Allah said to humans here is what I have given u to pass the test – the Quran. First he consoled the

prophet saying these people will have better than anyone will ever have. This world was created to testand give beauty

From the Dajjal perspective – this world was created beautiful so that people could be tested was true at thetime of Adam, Nuh and Moses. It’s always been a test. But the beauty of the world is most apparent under thefitnah of Dajjal. He will bring out beauty and temptation in everything. So never before has there been more

ً َ .Never before has there been a bigger test. The more beautiful the world gets the harder the test gets .زِي

Whatever we made on this earth is ً َ so we can test them. Both of these elements: the greatest beautification زِيof the earth and the greatest test both have to do with Dajjal and both tie back to him. If the Prophet is worried

about what is happening before and during his time then he is most worried about what is coming after him the

    ultimate fitnah and ً َ .زِي

Every nation was warned that the Day of Judgment would come and the beauty of this world is temporary. Everyprophet had this warning and message.

o If you are living at the time of Dajjal, you are closer to this promise than anyone else.o

These ayaat in the context of the fitnah ring louder than to anybody else.o For someone who is facing fitnah of Dajjal this is very imminent. For a believer the idea of the Day of

Judgment being imminent is true anyway but not as much as for those people that face the fitnah.o The Messenger is being told this after he was told that Allah is taking care of his people but by the way,

this is what will happen when there is fitnah.

Meanings and Implications of ّ in the ayah

Ibn Ashoor – ّ ِ is being used to confirm to the Prophet (pbuh) that the world is not some mild kind of beauty.Allah is the one who made the beauty and made it tempting. It isn’t an easy test. Allah is the one who designedthis test a nd this is out of the Prophet’s hands.

o Balance in these ayaat of the Prophet being comforted but also being given a tough test.o This balanced interaction between Allah and the Prophet is found throughout the Quran.

Allah is sometimes so loving with the prophet and sometimes Allah is very tough Allah uses authoritative and tough statements because the Quran is enough. It is the final word

of Allah swt and no greater miracle will ever come. This gives the believer a different level of respect for the Quran. Allah shows the Quran so much

respect and stands by it. Imagine how much respect we have to give the Quran if Allah theCreator gives it that much respect.

    ل ا م-ل س ى ا ع و ت آ -ص و ق ت ه ح ت ا ن و آ ا ا و س ن ت آ هي أ ا غ ت ه و ش ف أ ر و ا ا ون م ت ا ف و

People of Quran, don’t become lax with the Quran. o و د don’t lean on the Quran like a pillow is leaned on. The Quran is there to comfort me. You – ت

become very casual with the book. You must follow it and recite it as it deserves to be recited in all hours of night and day. And spread it, and

beautify it with your voices, and reflect deeply in it so that you can succeed and become successful people. This Quran is better than anything that anyone gathers

o When you gather the tafseer of one ayah is better than anything else

o The human being wants to collect and be a collector. Collecting the Quran in terms of recitation, understanding or tafseer is the best collection.
