1. A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the diameter of
nichrome wire, d, and the resistance,R.
Diagram 1.1 shows the arrangement of the apparatus for the experiment.

A nichrome wire of diameter, d, 0.15 mm and length of 10 cm is connected. The switch is on and
the rheostat is adjusted until the ammeter reads 0. A. Then the reading on the voltmeter is
recorded.
The procedure is repeated with different d! 0.0 mm, 0.5 mm, 0."0 mm and 0."5 mm. The
actual corresponding readings of voltmeter are shown in Diagrams 1., 1.", 1.#, 1.5 and 1.$.
