YBhg Prof. Dr. Roslee Rajikan from The Center of Student Development and Alumni (Pusat Pengembangan Mahasiswa dan Perhubungan Alumni), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Y.Bhg. Ajunct Professor. Dato’ Dr. Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff, President of Malaysian Intellectuals of Minangkabau Association Our Invited speakers and attendances……………….. Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year, 2015. ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam unified become one. Start implementing our Blueprint for Asean Ecomic Community. Under this engangement, a single regional common market of Asean countries will be created this year. The main objective is to create a competitive market for over 600 million peoples in Asean. The honorable participants,

There will be free flow of goods, cross border capital investment and skilled labor following this movement. Including tariff reductions and streamlining of certain administrative procedures. Many businesses have begun preparing themselves three years ahead of time to meet the challenges and opportunities of the Asean Economic Community (AEC). Ladies and gentlemen,

This agreement can be a sword for us. At one hand he can be an opportunity for you but on the other hand can be a threat if you cant manage well. Even though, according to the Bangkok Post newspaper in Thailand, the AEC Scorecard at the moment shows the region behind schedule, having achieved only 73.6% of Phase 1 goals, it still offers a big opportunity in Asia as it will be viewed as a single large market. Furthermore, the integration will help increase Asean competitiveness against China and India. Participants,

According to the US International Trade Commission report on AEC at their officially

website usasean.org , the challenges that can be seen in the area of import and eksport side which vary widely among Asean members.

Example, procedures for trading are relatively easy to complete in strategic trade lines such as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, but very difficult in Laos and Cambodia. The quality of logistics services also varies among the Asean members, such as customs brokerage, freight forwarding, and express delivery. Logistics services are world-class in Singapore but poor in Laos, Cambodia, and Burma. The honorable participants,

Now the most important thing to do is to identify the SWOT analysis of each country and then completing each others cause now we are one. we are ASEAN. Our union is strong, the next thing is to strengthen the market in Asean by open sky, open sea, low prices cost at trading based on our agreement. Now ladies and gentlement, what we are waiting for. Lets begin to recognize the capabilities of your country and improve your ability in competition. and together we will face the AEC. Ladies and Gentlemen,

Economic boost in ASEAN soon will come within the AEC. But economic boost will not coming to us if we’re not welcoming new innovation on products and services to be fully integrated with economic system. Science and technology will always be the backbone of economy. But, within the development of economy, can we harmonize it with our science and technology? Are we ready?

The honorable participants,

Science and technology came from human needs. Science came from observing natures. By observing daylight and night, human know about season. After that they can crop and hunts based on the season. And then the knowledge developed and humans made some tools to help them to overcome the human needs. Now, it calls technology. Things that help you search food, information, even looking your far relatives.

Ladies and gentlemen,

After long history, we’re already know that science and technology not only the backbone of economy. Science and technology not only bring you nice laptop or gadget. It is our backbone to overcome survival on earth. We’re facing complex human needs nowadays; complex food chain, complex exchange of information, and for sure, complex system of economy. We need to adapt those problems to help us survive. How can we feed 600 million peoples in ASEAN with limited soil we have if we’re still using traditional way to crops and harvest goods from earth? How can we move tons of goods everyday if we’re still using old sea fleets without making improvement on the workhorse? How can we serve electricity for 600 million people, if we’re still counting with burning non-reusable energy?

The honorable participants,

We must increase our science and technology research with basic foundation; our survival. We need to make a good products and services to be used by millions. Science and technology are not used only for making good books to be read. It should create excellent product and services to help us every day.

We must invest for our future. To develop ASEAN based on science and technology, we must act. First, we must stimulate the research with open innovation for all people. Second, we should bring priorities and investment in science and technology to help us to produce energy and food

in proper and efficient way. Third, make synergy between scientist, institution, and industry to work together

Stimulate the research with open innovation must be encouraged to all people. Because every person has their own ideas to be implemented; every person is unique. The government shall bring facilities to the ideas for every single factor in life. For example, making communities for people who want to contribute in science, and giving proper reward to people who invented and implement it in making a good product based on those science.

Producing energy and food always shows contradictive way. Energy and food are the important factors that people needs. According to Accenture, 172% of energy consumption will occur between 2007- 2030. With 600 million people in community, we need more energy with burning more fossil fuel. And we also cutting forest to be convert to a farm to produce our food. Those actions will harm our earth and we will get the payback of what we did like pollutants or flood. We should make renewable fuel to be used by people. Solar, wind, tidal waves, or even our waste food can be used to make renewable energy. We can increase the fertility of the soil with some technology we invest so we reduce the cutting of the forest. The government should invest in infrastructure so that our scientists ready to be included on the program. From Accenture data, only 3 percent of ASEAN-5 energy consumption used renewable energy. They should build proper institution to facilitate science and technology to implement. They should invest on renewable energy and sustain the supply of food.

Make synergy between scientist, institution and industry to work together also will increase the needs of science and technology to be implemented as a product for people. If we compare to economic system, the people are the costumer. They have a demand. Scientists work as supplier. And scientist needs institution as tools to make their ideas into goods. And then, industry will produce the mass product to be served to costumer. The government should support the process of R&D from scientist into commercialization. According to The Economist news, R&D spending in Asia is increase from 24% to 35%. We should keep that moment and find possibilities to develop more than before. And the harmony between scientist, institution, and industry not only bring development for people activities, but also improving the quality of life.

With rapid development in science and technology, we can have better future in facing complex problems that we used to. And we should rise.

“If you say science and technology will destroy the earth, it is wrong. People just misused it”
