The word 9'ari Raya8 literally means 92elebration 1ay8. 'ari Raya Aidilfitri is

celebrated at the end of the !uslim month of Ramadhan. 1uring the month of Ramadhan,

!uslims from all o$er the world obser$e a month long fasting and abstinence from sunrise

to sunset.

The Ramadhan month is actually a great time for a holiday in !alaysia. At the close

of each fasting period e$eryday, which is generally around Jpm, the celebrants would enjoy

a great meal. All o$er the country you will be able to find food ba3aars that are specially

organi3ed to sell food during this holy month. This is where you would be able to sample

some of the finest !alay cuisines.

ince the !uslim 2alendar actually follows the *unar 2ycle, the dates for 'ari Raya

Aidilfitri change each year. The exact date is announced when officials from $arious parts

of the country $iew the ew !oon from $arious $antage points around the country. I will

place an approximate date for future celebrations at the end of the post. "hile these dates

will only be confirmed upon the sighting of the new moon for that period, being around

during these dates will definitely gi$e you a good chance of joining in during your holiday

to !alaysia. There may e$en be times when 'ari Raya falls on the same date or close to

another major celebration such as 2hinese ew +ear or e$en 1eepa$ali.

A typical first day of 'ari Raya Aidilfitri starts of with families $isiting the gra$es of

their lo$ed ones. Then it8s off to the mosque for mandatory prayers after which e$eryone

decs in their best traditional clothes and $isit the homes of their family and friends.

'ari Raya 'aji is a celebration to mar the return of their lo$ed ones who ha$e

tra$elled to !ecca for the !uslim pilgrimage. ne of the highlights of the celebration is theslaughtering of li$estoc mainly cows that is done in the spirit of religion and community.

This act is done $oluntarily and the meat from the slaughter is then shared with their

families, neighbours and friends with special attention paid to the poor. The intention of

this is to not only foster better relations but also as a reminder to the rich of the poor who

li$e among them.

If you happen to be on a holiday to !alaysia during 'ari Raya, especially 'ari Raya

Aidilfitri, be sure to $isit some of the numerous pen 'ouses that are organi3ed by the locals and

e$en prominent figures. pen 'ouses are organi3ed for e$ery festi$al as part of the !alaysian

2ulture and e$en strangers are in$ited to enjoy the festi$ities. 6ust be sure to dress up a bit.

It is at these times that you will be able to sample the best of !alay 2uisines. The Rendang is

a must during 'ari Raya. This is a thic chicen curry that is cooed with peanuts and is eaten with

%etupat which is compressed rice cooed in wo$en pacets made from lea$es. Another fa$ourite is

atay which is chicen or beef roasted on stics ebab style. 5a$ourite be$erages during 'ari Raya

include Air (andung which is Rose yrup missed with e$aporated mil and also oya !il with

blac jelly cubes.
