What is Rés do Chão?

Rés do Chão (Ground-floor) is an urban rehabilitation and renewal project. Its main goal is the revitalization and stimulation of cities through the reoccupation and rehabilitation of vacant ground-floor spaces. The project began in 2013 and won an award by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation under the FAZ – Ideias de Origem Portuguesa initiative; since 2014, it functions with the support of the BIP-ZIP program

of the Lisbon City Hall.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

What issue does it aim to solve?

Rés do Chão recognized a persistent issue on Portuguese urban environments: the vacating of commercial ground-floor spaces. This situation has lead to the degradation of buildings and public space, as well as to the abandonment of streets and the loss of street life dynamics.

Activating Public Space

Parklet

Parklet is an enlargement strategy of the public promenade in urban areas with a significant lack of public space, through the implementation of a public use platform in a previous parking spot space. Its main objective is to increase the number and offer of small local public spaces in the city, encouraging the permanence on the street and the use of local trade. The Poço dos Negros Parklet was built through Crowdfunding financing and was open to the public between 6 and 20 June 2015 in

Rua Poço dos Negros.
