    Question 1

Read the following text and complete the given task.

Flying squirrels are essentially nocturnal forest animals. Unlike tree squirrels, some of

which make nests in the canopy, flying squirrels roost in tree holes which they have made

themselves or which woodpeckers have abandoned. The circumference of the hole, its height and

size are associated with the different species that harbour in them. The giant flying squirrels

usually roost in holes about 20 metres above ground in very large trees, while the medium and

smaller sized squirrels roosting holes are at heights of 5-10 metres in medium and smaller trees.

Such stratification of roosts is associated with the different feeding habits of the different sized

    squirrels.

It is rare to be able to observe a flying squirrel when airborne. While sitting on a bough,

the parachute is tucked close to the body and it resembles a giant tree squirrel.

The diet of the flying squirrel consists of fruits and nuts of various trees, while some

species feed solely on green leaves and shoots. Some also eat bark and occasionally feed on

insects. The larger species have also been known to feed on tree lizards and geckos.

The natural predators of squirrels are snakes, owls, eagles and smaller arboreal

carnivores. But man is foremost of all. Squirrels are hunted for their meat, especially the larger

species. Deforestation of their primary habitat has also contributed to population decimation of

most of the forest squirrel species.

Read the following text and complete the given task.

Flowing waters such as rivers and streams are grouped under the term lotic ecosystems,

from the Latin lotus, meaning to wash. Rain supplies the water in these ecosystems.

The lotic ecosystem in the upper reaches consists of mountain streams passing through

steep gradients. The water is very fast and turbulent. Undisturbed streams in the mountains are

characterized by crystal clear water, low temperature and high dissolved oxygen content, with

    little seasonal variation.

Aquatic organisms living in this ecosystem are specialized groups which are able to

tolerate only a small range of environmental changes. They are bottom dwellers, some equipped

with a hold-fast organ to prevent them from being washed away downstream. A small catfish,

locally known as ikan keli depu ( Glyptothorax major ), with a suction organ on its belly, attaches

itself to rocks to prevent itself from being washed downstream while browsing for food. The

caddisfly, an aquatic insect of the order Trichoptera, attaches its nest to the bottom substrate of

the stream so it can filter food in the torrential stream.

Disturbances near the streams that affect dissolved oxygen concentration, water

temperature, clarity or suspended load have a profound effect on the organisms. The montane

aquatic dwellers are the first to be wiped out with only slight changes to these habitats.

    How to Save Our Earth?

    Extinction of animals and plants are becoming rampant Global warming is damaging the Earth Rising ocean at alarming rate, flood occurrence is increasing Pollution is becoming serious Ways to save our environment;

    - do not buy products made from endangered animals- walk, cycle or carpool- use CFC-free products- buy or plant organic food

    - reduce, reuse and recycle

Write a report on the problems we face on Earth and how we can save it.
