THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPATIAL AND
GEOMETRIC THINKING :
CO-ORDINATING SPACE IN DRAWINGS

STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT IN
CHILDREN’S SPATIAL THINKING
1. Preaxial Schema (4 years)2. Uniaxial schema (6 years)3. Biaxial Schema (8 years)4. Intergrated Biaxial (10 years)
![Page 4: Kumpulan 09](https://reader035.vdokumen.net/reader035/viewer/2022073118/559d29c51a28abd6518b4730/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Preaxial Schema (4 years)
The child represents the component
shapes of an object and
the locations of objects within a
rectangular field.
![Page 5: Kumpulan 09](https://reader035.vdokumen.net/reader035/viewer/2022073118/559d29c51a28abd6518b4730/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

The child can specify an object’s internal shapes and spatial relations and its location relative to the edge of the field.
Example: the relative heights of people a shown from the same baseline.
Uniaxial Schema (6 years)
![Page 7: Kumpulan 09](https://reader035.vdokumen.net/reader035/viewer/2022073118/559d29c51a28abd6518b4730/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

Biaxial Schema (8 years)
The child mentally sets up two separate location fields within the main field – usually as foreground and background and so uses two separate reference lines for heights.
![Page 9: Kumpulan 09](https://reader035.vdokumen.net/reader035/viewer/2022073118/559d29c51a28abd6518b4730/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

The child co-ordinates the whole field with both horizontal and vertical axes used as references.
Drawings contain “middle ground” linking foreground and middle ground.
Intergrated Biaxial (10 years)
