Drug dosages/regimens

This section gives drug doses for the drugs mentioned in these guidelines. Forease of use and to avoid the need to make calculations, doses are givenaccording to body weight of the child. Errors in calculating drug doses arecommon in hospital practice worldwide, so calculations should be avoided,where possible. A number of doses are given covering a range of body weightsfrom 329 kg.

A drug table for neonates in the first 2 months of life is included in Chapter 3,

pages 6266.However for some drugs (for example, antiretrovirals), it is better to calculatethe EXACT individual drug doses based on the body weight of the child, wherethis is possible. These drugs include those for which the exact dose is criticallyimportant to ensure a therapeutic effect or to avoid toxicity, e.g. digoxin,chloramphenicol, aminophylline and antiretroviral drugs.

For some antiretroviral drugs, recommended dosages are often given accordingto the surface area of the child. A table giving approximate child surface areas

for different weight categories is given below to help with this calculation. Thedoses in the table can then be used to check that the calculated dose isapproximately correct (and to check that a calculation error has not been made).
