no t e a t to o snich t h a t first meal*The following day we located a truck that was goingto the next village. We paid our passage and climbedaboard. The two girls were priviledged to s i t on thefront seat, -vdiich was a boards while QaLand and I found

lodging in back on top of the f re i^ t* This ride wasbumpy but it could have been worse. We arrived in an^ot^r dusty village and found lodging in a C2iineseoperated hotel. We had flies and noodles for si^iper inano t ^ r open a i r restaurant .

The next and f inal day we had just f i f ty miles tot r ave l in order to reach our des t inat ion. It wassupposed to take all day. The day began at 6 o'clocka t the police s ta t ion. We had to permit a l l of ourthings be opened and inspected again before the l a s tstage of our joifimey. As our things were Inspected theywere loaded onto iAie t r uck . The t ruck was wel l loaded*Fi rs t there were several layers of bricks > then a l l ourbelongings and l a s t of a l l the extra passengers thatcould uncomfortably, yet pol i te ly squeeze in . !Dieset rucks a l l have wooden frames over them so when they aref a l l there i sn ' t much rocaa fo r your head* The t ruckappeared battered and worn as usual, with a recklessdrtver who took great pride in his re l ic and his abililgrto drive it. After making a few romds in the vi l laget rying to s t i r up a few more passengars we got down tomore serious business o f reaching our dest inat ion. Isoon discovered why it took a l l day to t ravel f i f ty miles .The t ruok was unable to go above f i f teen miles per hourdue t o th e c on di t io n o f th e ro ad . Never the le s s th et ruck proved to be worth i t s hi re . It had been bouncedand twisted from hi t t ing so many bmops t ha t it was completely loose in every jo int . TWLs was profi table fo rnow it patterned i t se l f after each bump and ruji encountered. C5ontinuely we twisted, bunped and swayed. One hadto hang onto sonthing a l l the t ime. Bveiy once in a?Mle we would get 8 r e s t when the motor died and neededa little a t ten t ion . Thus we inched our way along t ^ a twould normally be a good creek bed.

Our dr iver was the adventurous type and we had tot ry out several new routes vtoich proved to be of no valuefo r we usual ly ended up with a dense jungle blocking ourway. One time passing through a vil lage we picked upabout for ty chi ldren who took great del igh t in runningaf ter the t ruck.

4 This was made possible due to our slow spped. Theiref for t s "were rewarded 7,iienever the t ruck had to stop. for repairs. They would gather around and "watch the^ fascinating procedures.About 3 o ' c lock in th e af ternoon we came t o a

small creek. The bridge appeared to be very unstable. After some ser ious del ibera t ion the dr ive r with the helpof another t ruck driver viio was also stopped, decidedt ha t the bridge was not strong enough. Thus our l i t t l egroup cruickly converted i t s e l f in to a constructiongang. The bridge was completely tom down and rebui l ti n about two hours time* It d id no t look a whole l o tstronger even then. The two trucks crossed withoutevent. Now most of the day was spent and it was a racewith the ccaning darkness. We a l l decided to go on un t i lwe reached our des t inat ion. Once again we ^ill resumedour s ta t ions grasping f ran t ica l ly in the dark fo r something to hang onto. We were now in dense j un^e . AllI cou l d s e e was darknes s and aU I cou l d b r ea t h e wasdust . Around 8:30 we reached ou r l a s t ba r r i e r . Bierewas one s t re tch o f road iidiich was very s teep and thedriver had been worried a l l the t r ip about the poss ib i li t i es of getting to the top. At the foot of the h i l lthe drivers stopped to give the trucks a breath and adrink of gas. The f i r s t truck was not very heavilyloaded and with roaring motor made % to the tc^. 0urtruck proceeded to duplicate the same effort, exceptthat i t didn't make the top. The motor kept gotog slowe r and slower unt i l it conqpletely stopped jus t a fewyards from the top. The thunder and l ightning in thedistance did not make the prospects for the evening toohopeful, Tfe connected a rope between the two trucks andhoped that this added pull would be enough. Aftereverything was ready the truck fefused to s t a r t . Thecrank stubbornly wore out two natives tras just aboutto wdar me out "iriien it s tar ted. Thus with both trucksroaring and everyone pulling on the rope the truckstruggled over the top. Once again we resumed oua? positions for the las t ten miles. About half way "Uiere therain began to pour. Just as we neared the edge of thevillage we were stopped again. Another bridge had beenwashed out. I t was -Uien nearing mid-ni^t and no onefel t in "ttie mood for another bridge building cas^aign. The driver announced tha t we would remain where we werefor the night. We a l l knew -wfeere there was a nice warmbed not too fa r av/a^ so we took our shoes and socks off
