Culture
The culture ofCubais a complex mixture of different, often contrasting, factors and
influences. Much of Cuban culture, especiallyCuban music, is instantly recognized throughout the
world.
Music
The music of Cuba, including the instruments and the dances, is mostly of European and African
origin. Most forms of the present day are creolized fusions and mixtures of these two great sources.Almost nothing remains of the original Indian traditions.
One of the main rhythmic fusions in Cuban music is theson. Other typical Cuban forms are
thehabanera, thehuarache, the damson, therumba, thebolero, thecachucha, the mambo,
thecha-cha-cha, the pinto, and many variations on these themes.[5]
Cuban music has been
immensely popular and influential in other countries. It was the original basis ofsalsaand
contributed not only to the development ofjazz, but also to Argentineantango, Ghanaianhigh-life,
West African Afro beat, and Spanishflamenco. Within modern Cuba, there are also popular
musicians working in therockandreggae tonidioms.
Cubanhip-hopis one of the latest genres of music to be embraced not only by the country's youth
but also, more reluctantly, by thegovernment. Initially, hip-hop was shunned by the authorities, because of its affiliation to America and capitalism. As more Cuban youth put their own energy and
style into the music, Cuban hip-hop eventually became more acceptable.
Sports
TheCuba national baseball teamfinished second in the first Cclassic against the Japanese
national team.Boxingis also rather popular. They also enjoybasketball, track and field, volleyball,
andrugby union.
Every year, Cuba holds the School Sports Games, a competition and is like the best for school
students.
Language.
Many words from Cuban Amerindian languages have entered common usage in both Spanish and
English, such as theTainewordscanoe, tobaccoandhurricane. Some of the place names are
Indian, such asGuanabacoa, andGuanajay.

Religion
Cuba's policy on religion has changed much since 1959, when religious Cubans were persecutedand could be denied jobs or an education by the government.
Another large religion in Cuba isSanteria. Santeria is ablendof Catholicism and traditionalYoruba
religions. When Africanslavesfirst arrived in Cuba during the 16th century, they were taught a few
simpleprayersand werebaptizedby the Spanish. The slaves combined this limited form of
Catholicism with their traditional religions to create Santeria, which survives to this day. During
colonial times and into the early Republic, many Cubans suffered from intense ethnocentrism and
confused Afro-Cuban religion with black magic and witchcraft. This caused them to associate
practitioners of Santeria and other Afro-Cuban cultures with criminals and the underworld, and to
discriminate against practitioners without understanding the nature of their religion.

Domestic violence
The main constituent for domestic violence is more of a socio-economic factor.
Contributors to this are saying that "the US Embargo Act" [18]is a main constituent
to this because of a lack of medicines and promotes hardships in the home which
could lead to domestic violence. It has been said in many sources that the
economic conditions in Cuba affect the relationship within the marriages. However,
studies show that "among the key causes of family violence in Cuba is the
continued existence of a patriarchal family law." On the positive side, "the FCW
demonstrate that there is a low incidence of domestic violence in Cuba
Abortion
Abortion in Cuba is somewhat liberal, even though there is aCatholicinfluence.
Cuba moved away from the Catholic Church, abortion was no longer illegal and no
longer had negative social or religious consequences for women. The Church has
little to no impact on the way women think about abortion. The use of
contraceptives, birth control, and abortions seem to keep family sizes somewhat
small and "modern" in comparison to otherLatin Americancountries. This in turn
makes the Cuban more of a cohesive unit. What is meant by "cohesive" is thatfamilies with less children tend to give more attention to the fewer children they
actually have

EconomyThe (economy ofCubais a largely centrallyplanned economydominated by state-run enterprises
overseen by theCubangovernment, though there remains significant foreign investment and
private enterprise in Cuba. Most of the means of production are owned and run by the government,
and most of the labor force is employed by the state, although in recent years, the formation
ofcooperativesand self-employment has been encouraged by the Communist Party.
In the year 2000, public sector employment was 76% and private sector employment was 23%
compared to the 1981 ratio of 91% to 8%.]Capital investment is restricted and requires approval by
the government. The Cuban government sets most prices and rations goods to citizens. In 2009,
Cuba ranked 51st out of 182 with anHDIof 0.863; remarkably high considering its GDP per capita
only places it 95th.Public services and transport in Cuba however are regarded to be second-rate
compared with its more developed counterparts on the mainland.

In the 1950s, Cuba had a vibrant but extremely unequal economy, with large
capital outflows to foreign investors.[7]In the 1950s, Cuba'sgross domestic
product(GDP) per capita was roughly equal to that of contemporary Italy, and
significantly higher than that of countries such as Japan, although Cuba's GDP per
capita was still only a sixth as large as that of the United States. The country has
made significant progress since the Revolution towards a more even distribution of
income and Cuba has been placed under economic embargo by the United States.
The economy grew intermittently under Castro until the collapse of the Soviet
Union, which provided Cuba with $4 billion to $6 billion in subsidies annually.
Between 1990 and 1993, Cuba's GDP declined by 33%, partially due to loss of
Soviet subsidies. Yet Cuba has managed to retain high levels of healthcare and
education

Natural ResourcesCuba is blessed by its rich land. It has concentrated mineral wealth in nickel, wood, and
petroleum. In fact, Cuba has enough petroleum deposits in offshore wells that, once it
develops the machinery to extract the oil, it can become self sufficient and will not need toimport oil. Besides mineral wealth, Cuba also has a strong fishing industry that caters to
the foreign markets [exports] and the tourist hotels in Cuba.

The most important natural resource in Cuba is agriculture. Cuban
farmers are able to cultivate a wide array of products, including rice,
beans, and many others. Can you identify the products pictured here?
They are items readily available in a common superstore:

Topography
Cuba's spectacular natural beauty has earned it the name Pearl of the Antilles. The
coastline is marked by bays, reefs, keys, and islets. Along the southern coast are long
stretches of lowlands and swamps, including the great Zapata Swamp (Coinage de Zapata).
Slightly more than half the island consists of flat or rolling terrain and the remainder is
hilly or mountainous, with mountains covering about a quarter of its total area. In general,
eastern Cuba is dominated by the Sierra Maestra, culminating in Pico Real del Tarquinii
2,005 m/6,578 ft.); around Camagey are rolling plains and low mountains; central Cuba
contains the Trinidad (Escambray) Mountains in addition to flat or rolling land; and the
west is dominated by the Sierra de los Organs. The largest river, the Cauto, flows westward
for 249 km (155 mi) north of the Sierra Maestra but is little used for commercial navigationpurposes.
