Much has happened over the past year, and our students and teachers have been involved in a tremendous variety of activities, both in school, and beyond. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the school’s staff, both teaching and non-teaching, for their professionalism and commitment, and their willingness to give up much of their own free time, for the benefit of our dear students, and for the school. Our exam results this year are highly impressive, and again reflect the quality of teaching, and the determination of our students to succeed in everything they do. The world is changing fast, and so is education, the way students learn, and indeed what they learn. It is vital that Sri Bestari keeps abreast of these changes, and that we prepare our students for life as leaders in an evolving international community. The coming year should see some exciting improvements to our school, which will be of great benefit to our students. In the six months I have been a part of the Sri Bestari community, I have been bowled over (that’s a UK expression!) by the friendliness, positivity and cooperation of both the school’s staff and the students. I am proud to be part of the Sri Bestari team, and I look forward to an exciting and innovative future for our school. To those who have left us this year for further studies, be the best that you can be. To those students still with us, make the very best of your time with us.

SRI BESTARI IS GOING GLOBAL

Students in today’s schools will grow up to live, learn and work

in an interna onal society. Mul na onal companies and

which meets global standards. Our objec ves are to :

* add a feeling of belonging to a global as well as a na onal community

* incorporate into the school culture and curriculum, a more interna onal flavour, along with

aspects of school management and teaching which have been proved to be highly successful in

other countries

* encourage more student‐centred learning, and make learning more exci ng, challenging and

“hands on”.

* enhance the provision for both gi ed children, and those with learning difficul es

* the embrace disadvantaged students, whereby the school is not only for the more privileged

* encourage students to help each other and provide mutual support

* have a rac ve classroom which display quality and relevant examples of students’ work, which is

changed regularly

* dress smartly, and have a pride in our look and appearance

* increase the range of subjects and languages offered

* include more interna onal co‐curricular ac vi es, sports and games

* expose students to other cultures, through increasing links with schools in other countries

* develop a school website which is organic, interac ve, informa ve and encourages parents and

others to input views and ideas

* increase parental involvement in the school

* introduce interna onally accepted school standards and audi ng

* offer interna onal examina ons, such as Cambridge IGCSE as an op onal extra, in selected

News from Manjaria Bestari

Page 10 Sr i Bestar i Newsletter Volume 7 Issue 1

It takes a lot of courage for these little children to come to school for the first time. They have to leave their comfort zone and enter a strange place which they will have to learn how to adapt. During the orientation week, the school had planned many activities which the children can participate in and enjoy themselves. These activities at Manjaria helped these children to build up their self confidence and they are self motivated to do things themselves. The children learn better through role-play activities and are able to associate themselves with their daily activities at home and in school.

Parents played a very important role in their children’s early formative years. Through the encouragement of the parents by sending the child to school daily although the child cried during the departure time of their parents. They know that their child will be in good hands of the teachers in Manjaria. These little children will be themselves once the parents leave the school compound. Parents should believe that tough love is necessary in order not to spoil a child.

After three months in Manjaria, the children have learnt how to make friends, do their work independently and some have pick up their reading and comprehension skills. With the support from the parents, the teachers and the school can groom the children into a well balanced person.

Activities in Manjaria Bestari 4th to 6th January 2012- Orientation Week

During the whole week, the children get to know their teachers and friends. The children learn simple school rules and how to behave in the class. At the same time, good manners and magic words (good morning goodbye, thank you, sorry, excuse me) are taught by role play activities.

13th January 2012 – Manjaria Day

The children were exposed to various activities in Manjaria through watching slide shows. Then the children were taught how to use the materials during the activities and who will be the in charge teacher for the activities. The children tried out some sports games at the playground. These children did some craft works to decorate the school for Chinese New Year.

31st January 2012- Birthday Party

The school organized a birthday party for all the children who were born in the month of January. These children had their birthday by walking around the cakes while holding the globe. The cakes with the lighted candles represented the sun. The children have to walk around the cakes according to their age; the number of years the globe goes round the sun.

3rd February 2012- Chinese New Yew Celebration

The children came to school wearing their different types of traditional costumes. They sang and performed for their friends. The children were so excited while waiting for the lion dance troop to come to Manjaria. Once they heard the beat of the drum, every one went out to the playground beside the canteen. Parents brought in a lot of cookies and cakes for the children. Everyone had a good time but we do have a few children who were scared of the lion dance troop.

11th February 2012- Replacement day for Chinese New Year Holidays

The children had their first cookery lesson in school. The children learnt how to bake butter cakes. The children were divided into groups and all of them took turns to beat the eggs and also the batter. These little children baked very tasty butter cakes which they took home to share with their family members.

29th February 2012- Birthday Party

The school organized a birthday party for all the children who were born in the month of February. Some parents brought in cakes and party packs to be given to other children.

3rd March 2012- Replacement Day for Chinese New Year Holidays

The children had sports practice at the field. The children tried out different events together with their friends. Later in the day, the children did paper folding to form stars to give to each other as prizes for the sports events.

9th March 2012- Indoor and Outdoor Activities

The children brought in the badminton rackets, ping-pong bat and others. The children learnt how to share with those who did not have. They formed a good peer group relationship while they were playing with their friends.

27th March 2012- Birthday Party

The school organized a birthday party for all the children who were born in the month of March.

24th March 2012- Manjaria Annual Sports Day

The children came to school very early. The children did very well in the Sports Drill performance. The sports events went on smoothly although there were absentees on that day. During this sports day, the parents were there to give their children support and encouragement. The parents themselves also had an enjoyable time taking part in some events with their children.

Every child went home with at least two prizes. The champion house for this year sports was Margosa House (Blue House).
