Preface to the web edition of Sri Shiva Shasranamam

It was suggested by the Late Shankaracharya of Kanchi titled Sri

Chandrasekharendra Saraswati sometime in 1989 to a elite group of people that as there

is a lot of strife, hatred etc between several communities in India that a particular Shiva

Sahasranamam (out of 3 or more versions) from a Linga Purana should be got published

in Tamilnadu. He also said that a daily recital of these specific names of Lord Shiva will

result in harmonizing and setting up good relations say between husband & wife, father

& son etc inside a family, conflicts between two adjacent villages, neighboring countries,

etc at various levels. Specially whenever there is an estrangement or talks of divorce

between husband and wife, it has been found to be of highest value by uniting them even

after years of separations. Even a great war between countries can be prevented if Shiva

Sahasranamam is recited collectively by a group of devotees. For getting this work

published with meaning he suggested the name of a retired officer in Chennai (Who after

Sanyas is known as Swami Shantananda Puri) who was at that time teaching Sanskrit to a

no of pupil in a colony in Chennai. When the gentleman was approached with the

Shankaracharyas message for translation of the names the later at first refused to

undertake the assignment as normally all great Sahasranamams were translated by noblesouls like Adi Sankra as many of the meanings had esoteric significance. Translating

these names in a casual manner based on dictionary meaning will be tantamount to

committing a great sin. As it was the Shankaracharya who was an evolved soul

nicknamed by people as Walking God, he ultimately accepted the task. He found to his

dismay that no copy of Linga Purana which contained this Sahasranamam was available

which he had done his Ph. D thesis a few years back. This is how the invisible mercy of

the pontiff of the Kanchi Mutt worked in order to get fulfilled the Lords task. Mr. X got

a copy of the Linga Purana for reference with the lecturer above. The lecturer warned him

that he (Mr. X) should not venture to write the meaning of the thousand names on his

own. He also suggested that he should go to a particular house in Chennai where a copy

of the Linga Purana was available with a detailed commentary from a great scholar of

yore named Ballala. Mr. X was able to contact the person mentioned by the Lecturer andgot a Xerox copy of the commentary related to the portion of Shiva Sahasranamam and

thus was enabled to fulfill successfully the great task of translation in Tamil as required

by H.H. Swami Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati the then Shankaracharya of Kanchi.

Later on, on the suggestion of other colleagues Mr. X got it translated in Hindi also and

it got published in 1991 with the help of Late Swami Purharananda ji Maharaj of

Uttrakhand (Vasistha Guha). This narration has been given with a view to emphasize that

this entire book has come out with the help of divine inspiration at various levels.

May this book be of great help to those who are suffering for want of good

relations with other people as also those who like to get Moksha (liberation) by the

chanting of these sacred 1000 names given in this text.
