Taylor’s University Student Exchange Programme enables you to study in more than 200 renowned universities globally by paying zero foreign tuition fees. You can spend up to a semester abroad by only paying local tuition fees to Taylor’s University.

Moreover, students are able to acquire credit transfer when return-ing to their home institution and receive a partial transcript from the host institution. Do note that prior approval from the school on the modules to be undertaken at the host institution is required.

OVERVIEW OF STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMMEWelcome to the exciting world of student exchange! Taylor’s University Student Exchange Programme provides vast opportunities for students to go on student exchange at a wide range of universities across the globe.

Before you embark on this remarkable journey, you are advised to pay attention to the following important aspects:• Submit your application to the Global Mobility Office at least

TWO semesters before your preferred exchange semester. This is to allow for adequate time to assess your application and provide assistance for the exchange semester

• Prior to going for student exchange, you are required to complete at least one year of full time study at Taylor’s University and pass all the modules enrolled

• In order for credit transfer to take place, the students must pass all the modules undertaken at the host institution and the credit value of the modules must be matched with those offered at Taylor’s University

• Taylor’s University has many options for undergraduate exchange semester at many reputable partner institutions in Asia, Europe, North America, Central and South America

• Consider the different experiences you would like to have on your semester exchange and seize this opportunity to break free from your comfort zone

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE STUDENTEXCHANGE PROGRAMME?

ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENT EXCHANGEPROGRAMMEAll Taylor’s University students enrolled in full-time undergraduate programmes can apply for the Student Exchange Programme. They are required to fulfill the following criteria at the time of application:• Attain academic excellence of at least 2.5 in CGPA • Fulfill any specific requirements by the preferred exchange

institution. Requirements such as field of study, language proficiency (English or other language), year of study, etc., are available from our student exchange partners' factsheets

• Portray strong image as reliable and outstanding ambassador for Taylor’s University and Malaysia

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. STUDENT APPLICANT a. To discuss with your parents on your decision and university of choice. b. To find out more about the university, cost of living, visa requirements, air fares, accommodation and travel and health insurance. c. To discuss with your Programme Director on the choice of electives. d. To apply for your Student Visa promptly – at least 2-3 months before travelling dates. For International Students Only e. Recommendation to initiate your Malaysian Student Pass renewal process at least 6 months before your intended travelling date.

This is subject to the approval from the Malaysian Immigration Department. Please liaise and follow up with Taylor’s International Office on the timely renewal of your Malaysian Student Pass and make known to them on your purpose for early renewal i.e. to participate in the Taylor’s Student Exchange Programme. Upon returning to Malaysia from your Student Exchange Programme, please ensure that your Student Pass remain active.

2. GLOBAL MOBILITY OFFICE a. To provide updated information on available universities for Student Exchange Programme. b. To liaise with the Partner University on nomination and module selections. c. To provide guidance to students on the preparation needed for their Student Exchange Programme including advisory on partner

universities, application process to host university, cost of living, visa requirements, accommodation, travel and medical healthcare insurance and matters pertaining to safety.

3. ACADEMIC SCHOOL a. To approve the student’s application for student exchange and provide guidance on the modules selection. b. To provide advisory on the Student Exchange Learning Agreement and provide approval on the modules and credits to be undertaken

at the host university. c. For Non-Electives Semester - To map the modules for the Student Exchange Programme and resolve any module mapping issues that

may arise. d. To ensure that the student’s credit is transferred back to Taylor’s University.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are a scholarship holder, please check with your sponsor if the funding will be continued for your student exchange programme. Similarly for those on the PTPTN loan, please note that you will not be able to get your loan disbursement using the results obtained from the host institution as the GPA is not captured in your student exchange programme.

IMPORTANT PREPARATION FORTAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMMEGetting ready for exchange is exhilarating, but the right arrangements are important for a safe and fruitful semester abroad. It is important to be flexible and approach your new setting with an open mind. It is also important to understand the cultural differences of the country you are travelling to so you can be respectful when networking with locals. Here are some significant things to keep in mind:

VISAS

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC VISA REQUIREMENTS

Having a valid travelling visa is essential. As soon as you have been approved for your Student Exchange Programme, you should contact the nearest embassy / consulate of your host country for visa application procedure. You will need your official acceptance documentation from the host institution to apply for a student visa of your host country. Make sure you check how long it will take to obtain your visa. Unless advised otherwise by the overseas embassy / consulate, you must have your visa before you leave Malaysia. Each nationality has different processes and procedures for obtaining a student visa and these can change frequently. For this reason, Taylor’s University is not able to apply for the student’s visa on your behalf but advise that you check the embassy / consulate website regularly for the updated information. You may contact the embassy / consulate directly for further enquiries and liaison.

MEDICAL, HEALTH AND TRAVEL INSURANCEAll exchange students are required to purchase and have a valid Medical, Health and Travel Insurance. Detailed information and requirements will be given to you at the pre-departure session. Please note that some partner universities from certain countries require you to purchase medical and health insurance directly from them. Prices differ at each university but you will be informed of this after you apply. Students will be responsible for any costs linked with these compulsory insurance necessities at the host university.

ACCOMMODATIONYou need to take care of all the arrangements pertaining to accommodation. You can choose if you want to live on campus or off campus, but think about vital factors when making this decision such as your social networks and travel time to and from campus. Pricing of the accommodation is normally important to exchange students and having a trusted roommate of same gender helps to ease the overall costs. In general, information on accommodation is provided by your host institutions hence do pay close attention to application’s details and deadline.

You can buy plane tickets once you receive official acceptance from your host university and have your study plan approved by Taylor’s University. These two aspects as well as attending the pre-departure briefing and obtaining the relevant student’s visa will determine your final acceptance to the Taylor’s University Student Exchange Programme.

PLANE TICKETS

The Pre-Departure Briefing is an effective platform to get important information pertaining to your Student Exchange Programme. You will receive an invitation to attend the Pre-Departure Briefing which is compulsory for all exchange students. The briefing will cover various topics such as: • your responsibilities as an exchange student • academic credit transfer and approved modules for student

exchange• enrolment for one-semester exchange at the host institution• foreign tuition fees waiver for one-semester exchange at the

host institution• funding and scholarship (if applicable)• emergency support and embassy / consulate contacts • medical, healthcare and travel insurance• settling into your new environment and cultural adaptation • risk management and safety matters• submission of your Indemnity Form and a copy of your travel

and medical healthcare insurance plan.

As soon as you have been accepted by your Host University and secure your student visa, you must also finalize your travel itinerary including flight, accommodation, travel and medical healthcare insurance.

FREQUENTLY-ASKED-QUESTIONS FORTAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMMECan I participate in the Student Exchange Programme? The Student Exchange Programme is open to all undergraduates who have completed their first year of study at Taylor’s University. This programme allows you to spend 1 semester abroad at one of Taylor’s University partner universities for student exchange.

Am I eligible for the Student Exchange Programme? To be eligible for the Student Exchange Programme, you will need to have a minimum of CGPA 2.5 and possessed good command of the English Language which requirement varies according to programme and host institution.

How is my CGPA being calculated during my exchange semester? Your CGPA will not be taken into consideration during the exchange semester and will be prorated based on your study years at Taylor’s University.

Will I be receiving a transcript for my exchange semester? All exchange students will receive a partial transcript upon returning from your Student Exchange Programme and the grading is based on the system adopted by the host university.

Where can I find the partner universities for Taylor’s University Student Exchange Programme? You can find the listing of Taylor’s University partner universities for Student Exchange on our website. Please look for Taylor’s University Outbound Student Exchange page at www.taylors.edu.my/exchange

Do I have to pay any tuition fees for the exchange semester and what are the other costs incurred? You will need to pay Taylor’s University’s semester fees before you depart for your exchange semester. You do not need to pay any tuition fees to the Host University. All other expenses including accommodation and cost of living are borne by the students.

Are Medical, Health and Travel Insurance compulsory for my exchange semester? All exchange students are required to purchase and have a valid Medical, Health and Travel Insurance. Detailed information and requirements will be given to you at the pre-exchange / departure session. Please note that some partner universities from certain countries require you to purchase medical and health insurance directly from them. Prices differ at each university but you will be informed of this after you apply. Am I allowed to change to another exchange university after the approval is given by the faculty?You are not encouraged to change the selected university to another one as by the time the selection is done, the host university would have closed their nomination and application deadline.

When do I purchase my flight tickets? You can purchase your flight tickets once you have received official acceptance from your host university and have your study plan approved by Taylor’s University. These two aspects as well as attend-ing the pre-departure briefing and obtaining the relevant student’s visa will determine your final acceptance to the Taylor’s University Student Exchange Programme. You should only purchase your flight tickets once the visa is approved as there is occurrence where student’s application for visa has been denied.

Lee Soon Onn is studying for a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Food Science with Nutrition in the School of Biosciences (SBS), and he opted to spend a semester on exchange at the RMIT University (RMIT) in Australia. Unlike Taylor’s University, RMIT is not situated as a campus and their buildings are located all over the city. As he said, “it initially took quite a while to memorize the exact locations where the classes were being held”, but then again it also helped him to explore the city. Reflecting on his studies he said that “In every class, we were expected to interact pro-actively with other students as well with the lecturers, which is quite different from what we have in Malaysia. There were tons of activities that require us to communicate constructively with the lecturers in discussion and also engaging with the community and society to put our knowledge earned from classes into actions”.

He went on to say that, “I always thought that the subjects in a foreign country would be more difficult than what we have here in Malaysia - but they are actually pretty much similar, just that the ways we learn are different due to the culture”. He found that RMIT provide a wide-range of extra-curricular activities and a sport centre where he was able to enjoy various kinds of sports, such as netball, basketball and Aussie Rules Football. He stayed in Unilodge Bundoora, which is a private halls of residence by the campus.

“I really enjoy the living environment. The furniture was brand new, it was high-tech and kept clean almost all the time. There were facilities such as a laundry, an iron, photocopy machine, pool tables, meeting rooms, common kitchens and a silent study area. All of my basic needs were taken care of”. In terms of the social environment, he found that there were some major differences.

As he said, “To be frank, I now really miss the gentle and kind environment in Australia - because whether you are a stranger or not, you will treated and greeted politely” Adding that, “I made one discovery for myself - that such positive energy from the people around me made everyday a better day, and I have learnt from it and I will apply it in Malaysia”.

He also found Melbourne to be a very multi-cultural city, which was full of people from around the world. “Frankly speaking, it was a challenge for me to approach caucasians at first………due to the cultural differences, the language barrier and most importantly my inner shyness. Nevertheless, things started to change as time passed, and before I noticed I was surrounded by people from all sort of different background and made tons of friends”.

Besides focusing on his studies, he also took the opportunity to work part-time in a restaurant. As he noted, “This really helped me to interact with other people, improve my English and to cope with my living expenses in Australia - as things are not cheap”, but added that his one future tip for exchange students would be this, “if you can cook for yourself – do it – as you will save a fortune!”. Reflecting on his semester on exchange, he said that, “While this was just one semester, it was long enough to make a great impact in my life. For a start, my English definitely improved during the semester.

Time management is another skill that I have honed. I didn’t really have as much time to do all the things I wanted to in Australia. I needed to study, finish the assignments, hang out and participate in social events and do a part-time job……..and all in just 5-months. This is where I learnt that I had to prioritise. At times, I just wanted to slack-off and be idle, but I had to discipline myself to make the most out of the programme and my time”.

Clearly all that discipline paid off, as Lee Soon Onn did well by achieving four Distinction grades - which is well above the average in Australia. Of course, you can’t talk about Melbourne without mentioning the weather. As he said, “the weather is really random in Melbourne – moving from being extremely hot to extremely cold. At first, you just have to endure it. But believe it or not, I am now missing the weather down there already!”
