MASTER OF ARTS (SOUTHEAST ASIAN HISTORY)

Today, history has become an increasingly important element in nation building. The significance given to the teaching of history as a subject in the national education system well reflects this truth. As such, it is pertinent that practitioners of history are provided with the right training so that they are able to contribute to nation building, besides participating in issues related to history. However, the existing training and courses offered are not sufficient enough to impart the required knowledge. The Master of Arts in Southeast Asian programme aims at overcoming this limitation. This Master of Arts in Southeast Asian programme is offered both full-time and part-time. It is conducted on the mixed-mode format that involves course work and research. For every paper taken the students are required to attend lectures, participate in tutorials, submit an essay and sit for the final examinations. Units Distribution for Graduation

Candidates are required to accumulate a total of 40 units as prerequisite for degree conferment which are distributed as follows:

Course Course Synopsis Lecturer

HET 521/4 Psychology and Sociology of Language

The course covers the sociological and psychological dimensions of language. The sociological dimension discusses the relationship between language and society and social issues relating to language. It deals with how language is used in multilingual speech communities, explains the varying patterns of language use, examines social reasons for language change, looks into how and why different racial and social groups develop and maintain speech variation. It will take account of both individual and community – wide attitudes, assumptions and motivations directed not only to the choice of linguistic repertoire but also to those who make the choices. The psychological dimension discusses the theories of learning and the major contemporary issues relating to the psychological foundations of language. It deals with the behaviourists’ views on language acquisition especially the views of Skinner, Watson and Pavlov; the views of the cognitive psychologists such as Piaget and the cognitive-innateness hypothesis of linguists-cum-psychologists such as Chomsky, Slobin and McNeill. It examines the second language learning theories of Krashen, Selinker and others. It looks into human language processing including perception and production of speech and writing as well as the instrumental and integrative motivation towards language learning.

HET 522/4 Perspectives in English Language Studies: Literacy and Literary

The course familiarises students with theoretical and research issues related to literacy and literature. Specific techniques and methods appropriate for use in the Malaysian context will also be examined. Among the areas related to literacy are domains of literacy, academic literacy, gender and literacy, historical aspects of literacy and social aspects of literacy.

This course will also explore the interface of literacy and literature. In this regard attention would be given to the following aspects: i. literature and its role in

promoting the reading habit specifically from the perspective of text selection and cultural and linguistic diversity.

ii. interrogating the discourse of literary texts in terms of subjectivity and reading protocols thereby sensitising readers to the ideological nature of literary discourse and how language operates to reinforce particular world views and in the process marginalize particular sections of the community.
