ABSTRAK

Kajian yang dijalankan bertujuan untuk menentukan faktor-faktor yangmempengaruhi peiajar untuk memilih dan seterusnya memasuki SekolahMenengah Teknik. Secara khususnya, kajian bertujuan untuk menentukanadakah faktor-faktor demografi, pencapaian dalam PMR, status ekonomi keluarga, faktor sekolah dan persekitaran seperti pengaruhrakan, citarasa, cita-cita dan kerjaya mempengaruhi pelajar untuk memilihdan seterusnya memasuki Sekolah Menengah Teknik yang berkenaan.Kajian ini telah dijalankan ke atas 280 orang responden yang terdiridaripada pelajar-pelajar tingkatan empat Sekolah Menengah Teknikdalam daerah Kota Setar, negeri Kedah Darul Aman. Pemilihanresponden adalah secara stratified random sampling dan kajian yangdijalankan adalah dengan menggunakan satu set soal selidik yangmengandungi 43 item merangkumi aspek demografi, pencapaian empatmata pelajaran utama PMR, status sosio-ekonomi keluarga, faktorsekolah dan persekitaran. Alat statistikal yang digunakan dalam kajian iniadalah secara pengukuran kecenderungan memusat dan variabiliti sepertifrekuensi, peratus, min dan sisihan piawai manakala pengujian hipotesistelah dilakukan secara crosstabulation khi kuasa dua bagi menentukankebersandaran antara pembolehubah bersandar dengan pembolehubah-pembolehubah tak bersandar. Kajian mendapati pemilihan pelajarterhadap Sekolah Menengah Teknik mempunyai hubungan yangsignifikan dengan faktor demografi; bangsa, aliran, sekolah terdahulu,urutan dalam keluarga dan jarak tumah ke Sekolah Menengah Teknikyang dipilih. Bagaimanapun, jantina dan bilangan adik beradik tidakmempunyai hubungan yang signifikan dengan pemilihan sekolah. Kajianjuga mendapati faktor pencapaian responden dalam PMR untuk empatmata pelajaran utama, Bahasa Melayu, Matematik, Sains dan Kemahiranhidup serta faktor status sosio-ekonomi keluarga tidak mempunyaihubungan yang signifikan dengan keputusan pemilihan sekolah. Bagifaktor sekolah pula, didapati keputusan cemerlang, kemudahan fizikalsekolah yang lengkap dan kedudukan sekolah yang berdekatan denganrumah mempunyai hubungan yang signifikan dengan pemilihan sekolahmanakala lain-lain pembolehubah seperti tahap disiplin, budaya dansuasana sekolah serta ciri-ciri guru tidak mempunyai hubungan yangsignifikan dengan keputusan pemilihan sekolah. Bagi faktor persekitaranpula, kajian mendapati pengaruh rakan, masalah sekolah terdahulu, cita-cita dan minat dalam bidang sains dan teknologi mempunyai hubunganyang signifikan dengan keputusan memilih dan seterusnya memasukiSekolah Menengah Teknik. Kajian juga mendapati 63.2 peratus daripadaresponden menyatakan pemilihan Sekolah Menengah Teknik adalahkeputusan mereka sendiri, 26.8 peratus setelah berbincang dengan ibubapa dan selebihnya dengan bantuan abang, kakak atau orang lain.

ABSTRACT

This research has been undertaken to determine the factors influencingstudents in selecting Technical Schools as their choice of school.Specifically, the purpose of this research is to find out whether thedemographic, PMR performance, family sosio-economic status, schooland the environment factor would have any influence on the studentselecting the particular Technical School. The research has been carriedout on 280 form four respondents from Technical Schools in the district ofKota Setar, Kedah Darul Aman. the selection of the respondents is basedon the stratified random sampling method. A set of questionairescomprising of 43 items has been used in this research which covers theaspects of demography, performance in four main subjects in PMR, familysosio-economic status, school and also the environment. The statisticalinstruments used in this research have been the measurement of centraltendency and variabilities which include frequency, percentage, min andstandard deviation. The test of hypothesis has been carried out based onthe crosstabulation Chi Square method to determine the relationshipbetween dependent and independent variables. The result from thisresearch have shown a significant relationship between the students’choice of Technical School and the demography factors; race, medium inschool, previous school, sequence in the family and the distance of thechoosen school. However, gender and the number of siblings in the familydid not show any significant relationship on the selection of school.Furthermore, there is also no significant relationship on the students’ PMRperformance in subjects like Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Sciences andLiving Skills. In addition to that, the family sosio-economic status hasshown negative results on the choices made by students’ on the particularschool. On the contrary, schools with excellent result, good facilities andlocated closely have shown a significant relationship on the selection ofschools by the students. Furthermore, peer influence, problems inprevious school, ambition and interest in Science and Technology havefavoured students to choose Technical School as their choice of school.Whereas, other variables like decipline, culture, teachers and schoolenvironment have not shown any positive relationship on the students’choice of school. From this research, 63.2% of the respondents havemade their own decision in selecting the Technical School. About 26.8%have made their decision by discussing with parents and the remainderthrough the help of brothers, sisters and others.
