The new CSA helical antenna turns the use of the quad-helical for Iridium antenna designs on its head.

At 16mm x 15mm HxD, this tiny circularly polarised dipole antenna reveals itself to be a low cost, high performer.

Size Matters

The certified CSA structure will be the basis for a series of standard and innovative antennas designs during 2015 and 2016.

Starting with the 16mm tall CSA we can double the height to 32mm, combining 2 CSA radiators on a single surface, substantially improv-ing low elevation angle gain and efficiency.

The first of these advanced embed-ded models, the CSA X, has been tested extensively and confirms the increased performance.

Key differences. CSA vs traditional quad-helical designs

Electrical - RHCP Dipole vs Quadra-helical • No matching circuits needed• Easy to tune & repeat• High manufacturing yield• Simple design• 2 component design• Direct connection to modem

Mechanical - UFL jumper vs SMA connector• CSA shorter & lighter• Antenna tamper-proof• Housing is machined ertalyte• Very strong in cold and hot weather• Excellent drop-test resistance

Antenna Patterns

Quad-helical - hemi-spherical pattern

Ceramic patch - cardioid pattern

Circularly polarised dipole - typi-cal dipole pattern

Typical Antenna Patterns

LEO satellites networks, by their nature, are constantly moving. Relative to your Iridium set-up, the following are facts:

1. 100% probability 3-4 Iridium satellites visible on the horizon2. These satellites 1200km to 3000km distant from you3. Their angle of elevation will be between 1 and 25 degrees4. < 25% probability one satellite visible from 35°& 90° elevation

So why build complicated helical antennas that radiate power into empty space?

The certified CSA design has enough gain at low angle elevations to be ap-proved the Iridium network, a stacked CSA design has substantially more gain!
