Terarium adalah koleksi tumbu-tumbuhan yang tumbuh dalam

LIVING THE BOSS LIFE!EXPLORING ENTREPRENEURSHIP WITH

NADZIRAH AND RAPIKA

For Nadzirah, inspiration came from looking at the people around her. She realised that youth meant

fresh ideas and fewer commitments, allowing her to take more risks and follow her dreams.

Always keen to embrace new technologies, Nadzirah sought to compliment them with her passion for

art and design. By creating her own patterns and artwork and printing them on fabric, she was able to

make shawls, shirts and more with a uniquely handmade aesthetic – distinctive fashion pieces that she

could truly call her own under the Nara Dsign label.

Rapika, on the other hand, honed her skills after she graduated by working at a cake academy. Although

she initially started as a sales associate, she went on to become a cake instructor teaching decor and

was exposed to many different sides of the F&B industry.

Through this period, she would also create cakes for family and friends. While she initially had no

thoughts of creating her own business, the constant support and patronage from people close to her

showed her that there was a huge demand for the cakes she could make. Thanks to them, she was able

to launch Blush Artisan and turn her passion into a business.

Being a young entrepreneur in Singapore brings

many challenges, but for those who dare to strike

out and become their own boss, it can be a truly

rewarding path. We approached Nadzirah Malik

and Rapika Mesra, the founders of Nara Dsign

and Blush Artisan Cakes, to ask them what their

secrets were, and find out what it takes to set up

and run a successful business of your very own.

HIASI BISKUT ANDA THE ART OF HAND-PAINTED COOKIES

Nadzirah finds it important to collaborate with other young entrepreneurs. By doing so, she gets to

learn from the experiences other people have, and gain technical knowledge to improve her abilities

and her business.

For Rapika, collaboration means coming together to create beautiful new products and reach out to a

wider audience. She also feels that it lets young entrepreneurs share their perspectives with each other,

and gain deeper insights into their own businesses. To her, the saying “two minds are better than one”

rings true.

Nadzirah and Rapika met at a wedding showcase event and instantly clicked! As Nadzirah puts it: “We

both share the same love for handcrafted items. She loves to bake cakes and I love to paint, so we

decided to come up with something totally new together.”

As they connected over their businesses, they began to explore various ideas they had to combine

decorating cakes with watercolour techniques. They started by painting on fondant cookies together,

and before they knew it, were holding a joint class just a few weeks later.

GETTING CREATIVE WITH CAFÉS!

There’s nothing that makes people sit back and unwind more than a cosy sofa, some chill

music and a fresh cup of coffee. Whether it’s catching up with friends or catching up on

work, the relaxing ambiance of a café is something that everyone can enjoy no matter

what time it is.

The Black Hole Group is an eclectic co-operative that includes some of Singapore’s

quirkiest cafés and lifestyle brands. Founded by Mustaffa Kamal and Calvin Seah, they

first set up with The Shophouse, a boutique hostel in Arab Street, before opening several

more cafés and a lifestyle consultancy. We met them over coffee to find out more about

how they created such unique places.

Using competition as motivation for creativity

Creating new takes on the familiar cafe experience

Traditionally, a café functions as a social spot – a place to come together with friends over good coffee

and great conversation. There, one can get away from the daily grind, and enjoy a casual and laid

back atmosphere.

By basing their cafés around concepts and aiming to deliver something out of the norm, the Black

Hole Group appeals to different crowds by providing unique lifestyle experiences that you will not

find anywhere else. These range from the well-known Working Title Burger Bar, to Afterwit Mexican

Taqueria and Santap, which specifically caters to brunch-lovers.

Today, you can find cafés in every part of Singapore, from downtown streets to sleepy HDB

neighbourhoods. With so many cafés around, Singaporeans have become more exacting and seek out

something beyond what a typical coffee chain can provide. Whether it’s delicious gourmet meals, a

unique atmosphere or speciality in-house roasts and avant garde brews, there are new cafés with fresh

concepts appearing almost every day.

Researching the latest food trends, like the reinvention of traditional dishes such as Nasi Lemak into new

For many of us, watching football matches with

friends and family forms a big part of our childhood.

Many of us even dreamed of growing up to be like our

favourite heroes on the pitch someday! To find out

what it takes to turn your passion into a professional

career, we approached the Young Lions Players, Aniq

Iskandar and Adam Hakeem, to ask them how they

got started and what advice they have for young

players who want to be just like them.

Both Aniq and Adam bonded with their fathers by playing football. Aniq’s

father would bring him to parks every weekend to play, and they would

also watch football together both on television and live at the old Kallang

Stadium. Through football, they were able to bond and grow closer. Today,

he hopes to continue playing professionally for as long as possible and

make his father proud.

For Adam, being the son of football legend Nazri Nasir meant football

was in his blood. He would always catch Singapore Premier League,

then known as the S.League, matches live both at home and away

whenever his father played, and followed his father to training when

he was just a child. With a strong passion for football from a young

age, the sport has always been a big part of his life.

What advice do they have for aspiring football players?

“Set a goal and keep working hard towards it. No one can tell you that

you can’t do it,” Aniq shared. In his view, it is important to stay patient

and never give up, even when things do not go the way you want

them to. Though success takes commitment and sacrifice, there

is always time to have fun and enjoy yourself along

the way.

For days when you aren’t at your best, Adam’s

advice is to stay positive and keep working

hard. There will be days when you will not be

playing at your best, but through hard work

and persistence, you can be confident that you

will get better. For him, the difference between

people who achieve their dreams and those who

don’t is the knowledge that it’s okay to fail, and

the willingness to learn from their mistakes and

do better.
