Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia touring IGEM 2014. Minister of Energy, Green Technology & Water at IGEM 2014.

IGEM 2015 (International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia) will look to provide a platform for the key drivers within the Malaysian Government’s Green Technology mandate.

Conceived in the year 2010, the IGEM series was positioned to take the lead and gather industry players and professionals from the public and private sectors (local & international) to explore and grasp the lucrative opportunities in the green market.

IGEM 2015 is the 6th in its series and shall continue to drive the green industry in Malaysia, as well as keeping it in sync with the most current innovations and initiatives in the market. IGEM’s ultimate goal is towards positioning Malaysia as a Green Technology Hub for the ASEAN Region.

Bearing the theme “Powering The Green Economy”, IGEM 2015 will be focusing on five key areas:-

a. Green Energy b. Green Transportc. Green Buildingd. Solid Waste Technology & Managemente. Clean Water Technology & Management

Over the past five years, IGEM has recorded approximately RM6 billion (combined) worth of business leads, reaching its peak in 2014 when RM2 billion was achieved. Thus continuing the great legacy, IGEM 2015 is expected to push the boundaries by strengthening the status of Malaysia as a Green Technology Hub for the ASEAN Region, as well as generating more green business opportunities for the country.

MainComponents :

a. Green EnergyThe Malaysian Government is committed to reducing its dependency on traditional sources of energy such as oil, gas and coal. This commitment has seen the encouragement and the fostering of renewable energy sources particularly biomass and solar as an alternative to the incumbent sources of power.

IGEM 2015 will seek to prominently feature suppliers of biomass and solar energy solutions and other less developed forms of renewable energy.

b. Green TransportWith land transportation in Malaysia accounting for 38 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, the development and implementation of a greener approach to transport is a huge priority. In response to this, the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology & Water in 2011 implemented the Electric Vehicle (EV) roadmap designed to propel Malaysia to be the regional hub for EV technology. Targets include reducing CO2 transport emissions by 40%, to gain 10% of the EV market and to deploy 2,000 electric buses by year 2020.

IGEM 2015 will aim to act as a showcase for the public and private sectors to really drive this ambition and help ensure the message and policy helps to permeate throughout the Malaysian society.

c. Green Building Malaysia’s economy continues to grow as it moves towards its goal of developed nation status by 2020. One of its most dynamic sectors, inextricably linked to economic growth, is the building sector which is estimated to be worth 14.5 billion USD by 2016. The Government’s challenge is to ensure that this expansion is linked to the new national agenda of sustainable development.

In line with this agenda, the National Green Building Index was launched on 21 May 2009 as a catalyst and a tangible measurement of success for all developers in the country.

Parameters for Green Technology include optimal use of materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, management of sustainable site, less consumption of electricity for lighting and air-conditioning, plus efficient consumption of water.

IGEM 2015 will continue to focus on this major sector of the green technology agenda of the country and will seek to feature the latest innovative solutions designed to ensure that energy efficiency is at a maximum and the carbon footprint at a minimum in any new development project.

d. Solid Waste Technology & Management As a developing country, Malaysia too requires proper technologies to cope with the ever increasing rate of waste generation as it is inevitable that as the economy of the country prospers, urbanisation occurs, thus the greater amount of waste is produced.

This gives a bright hope for the country to develop and implement waste-to-energy technologies that are associated with energy recovery, composting for waste avoidance, and recycling and reuse.

IGEM 2015 will be the binder of the public and private sectors to work together towards the same direction which is to develop and help in implementing technologies in not only minimising the production of waste, but to convert waste into valuable assets for the society (in terms of renewable energy generation), as well as to be kind to the environment.

e. Clean Water Technology & ManagementWith water resources of 21,500 cubic metres per capita per year, Malaysia is blessed with the abundance of water resources. However, to achieve prudence of water supply, water management needs to be reassessed (as of the 10th Malaysia Plan) to accommodate the ever increasing demand for water supply, especially from the agricultural sector.

The demand for water (excluding the agricultural sector) is expected to grow from 8,550 million litres per day (in 2009) to 10, 520 million litres per day by 2015. This is the main reason behind reassessing water management – from where water is drawn, to how it is treated, to reaching to the citizens and in the end, returned to the environment as wastewater.

IGEM 2015 will act as a common ground for technology providers and policy makers to exchange ideas in developing a long-term strategy for water resource management to achieve water security, to reconstruct the water services industry and returning wastewater to the environment pollution-free.
