It is worth noting here that Mohammad Yunus. the Razakchief w ho accom panied Gholam Azarn to this meeu ng, is todaymember of the Majils-e-Shura, a millionaire, a n d one of thdirectors of the Islamic Bank. I believe that thministers can do much more lhan what they have done in thregard."After the inauguration of a conference of the regional M ajlis-Shura, on October 2 , Gholarn Azam said, "If , God forbid, we aruna ble to save Pakistan, then w e will be una ble to save .eithourselves or ou r ideals. I t is this belief that has bcen the motivatinforce behind the efforts of the Jamaat w orkers and syrnpathisers idefending Pakistan. The enemies of o ur country have made thJamaat members their prime targets because they know that thJamaat is their greatest obstacle. They know that unless they kib e Jamaat workers, their nefarious plans will not materialise."

At a public mecting of Lhe Jamaat, held at Baitul M ok arn m oOctober 16, Gholam Azam said, "Th e Jamaat, in its atlempt tbring back normal conditions in the entire country, has beework ing tirelessly with the Peace Comm ittee."

Pakistan, Moulana Kausar Niazi has brought charges agaiGh olam Azam and the Al-Badr."As soon as the Freedom Fighters reached the outskirtsDhak a, Gholam Azam and othe r prominent leaders of the Jamrealized that i t was time to flee. Th ey kn ew that because of

parties, and thus was the guiding force behind the nine-month-lonkilling of Bengalis. t~ he also played a similar role in the mogruesome atrocity committed by these forces just prior tindependence: the massacre of th :Bengali intellectuals. In order expose Gholarn Azarn's role in this crime, we are giving an extrafrom an article that appeared in Bichitra on April 17, 198"EkatroreBhul Korini: GholmAzam 0 Jamaater Rajniri" ( I MadNo Mistake in 1971: Gholarn Azarn and the ~ a h a a tolilics).

Gholarn Azam was the ch e f protagonist in the murderof the intellectuals. In early September 197 1, at a m eetingwith Rao Farman Ali, Professor Azam presented ablueprint on the killing of h e inlellectuals. It was inaccordance with this blueprint that later in Decem ber, theintellectuals were cruelly murdered, Other Jamaat leaderssuch as Abdul Khaliq, Qorban Ali, Professor Yusuf Ali,Abbas Ali Khan, were also involved in this scheme.Documents discovered after liberation clearly reveal theplan to murder intellectuals. Th e plan was as follows: Itmight not be possible to preserve Pakistan. However, intellectuals, engineers, scientists, doctors, must beeliminated forever, so that even i f we lose Pakistan, thiscountry cannot function. Professor Azam gave directionsto his cadres, the A l-Badr, and A l-Shams, to carry out theplans of the blueprint. Areas were also demarcated. InJanuary 1972, quite a few of these blueprints wererecovered from captured Al-Badr leaders, A p n i o n of oneof these documents reads as follows: "The followingpersons must be killed. If necessary, the help of the armedforces may be taken. Incase any of these persons goesinto hiding, one of the members of his family should betaken instead. This person must be tortured in such amanner that the fugitive will be forced to surrender." Adirective written in Arabic noted: "Remember that if the

miscreants infiltrate the country, there is no safety for us.Therefore, in order lo preserve yourselves, muster upcourage and continue to fight. " In November, the Jamaatcirculaled a pamphlet which warned: "The enemy is allaround us; therefore we must work very carefully." At ameeting of the Al-Badr, some Jamaat leaders exhortedthose present, "You are fighting not only to preservePakistan; you are fighting to preserve Islam. In order torescue our motherland from the hands of these Nimruds, follow the direcdves of ou r Ameer (Gholam Azanl)."The Jamaat leaders have not rehted this article of Bichitr

about the role of the Jam aat, the A l-Badr, and the Islami ChhatSangha in killing the intellectuals under the guidance of GholaAzam. In September, after handing over the blueprint, Gholam A z qalong with som e other leaders, had visited the Physical Trainincam p at Moham madpur, tne headquarters of the Al-Badr, and thcenlre for the imprisonment and torture of the intellectuals. HeGholam Azam had visited the Al-Badr and Razakar training camIt was these trained Al-Badr and selected Razakars who later killthe intellectuals. Prior to this, Gholam Azam had issued severwarnings to ihe intellectuals, telling them of the grave danger thewere in for their un-Islamic stand in supporting Bangladesh. On September 25, at a reception in his honour given by thDh aka city Jamaat, Gholam Azam said, "In the recent turmoil andestruction caused by the miscreants, the Pakistanis who lost thelives have, for the most part, been associated with the Jamaat-eIslami. Th e Jarnaat-e-Islami considers Pakistan and Islam as onand the same. Pakistan is the home of al l the Muslims of the worlTherefore, if Pakistan does not survive, the workers of the Jamaabelieve that it will be no use living in this world. That is why thJamaat workers, putting their lives in danger. are continuingfight to save the integrity and unity of Pakistan. Therefore, b

It is for treason that they have convinced two of their senior leaders accept cabinet posts. These ministers are doing all in their powerbring back a sense of security to the people."Responding to Gholam Azam's address, Abbas Ali Khavowed to abide by the directives. "After every Karbala, Islam livagain. There are more Karbalas ahead of us. We must be readWe must not be cowed down by this ordeal by fire. Rather wmust strive even more ardently and unitedly to bring back peaand normal conditions to our country."

The former head (Amir) of Jamat-e-Islam and a heinous war criminal. The vile monster behindthe genocide of 1971, rapes and molestation of 45,00,000 Bengali women and murder ofhundreds of pro Bangladesh intellectuals. In one of the photos recovered from the archive ofPakistan military intelligence after the liberation, Gholam Azam and his top associate Motiur

Rahman Nizami are seen handing the list of the names of progressive Bangalee intellectualsover to the Pakistani generals for elimination. The guru of extremist Islamic ideologies inBangladesh. The Leader of 70,000 Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Sams forces. (New York Times, 30July,1971).

From SaudiArabia Gholam Azam traveled Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Beirut and Libya to lobby againstSheikh Mujib government and raise funds for counter revolution. Following his extensive

international PR activities Gholam Azam arrived in London. From London he published the Jamatinewspaper Daily Sangramon a weekly basis. In 1974, the weekly Bichitra published a veryinteresting report on Gholam Azams activities in London: In early 1974, Gholam Azam presenteda blueprint of anti Bangladesh activities at a committee meeting held in a house in East London.According to a reliable source some Pakistani nationals were also present in that meeting. Theparticipants in that secret meeting were: AT Sadi, Toaha bin Habib, Ali Hossain, Barrister AkhtarUddin, Meher Ali and Dr Talukdar. Pakistani citizen Mahmud Ali is one of the top Pakistanispresent in that meeting. The chair of the meeting Gholam Azam said to continue our activitiesfrom London will be difficult. So someone has to go back home. We ought to take risk-otherwisethere will be no outcome. But if you go home-you will have contacts. I have already contacted mypeople. Everything is okay. Handing out a leaflet to all members present Gholam said it has to bedistributed among the people of every village of Bangladesh. People are with us. According tosome sources the said leaflet contained propaganda for a proposed confederation with Pakistan.Others believed that it called for an Islamic revolution organized using the network of mosques. Some people were reported to have arrested near Dhaka carrying those leaflets. Gholam alsomentioned the proposed support for anti Bangladesh activities from Pakistan and some otherMiddle Eastern countries. (Like Zia) Gholam said Money is not a problem. It was heard thatGholam collected 45,000,000 Reals from Saudi Arabia for reconstructing the mosques ofBangladesh demolished during the war. Shrewd Gholam spent a large portion of that money topurchase a house in Manchester in UK. Presently his son Mehedi Hasan is living in that house.

Gholam Azam's eldest son Kaifi Azmi is a high ranking officer in Bangladesh Army and believedto be working as a link between ISI cell in Bangladesh Army and top Jamati policy maker i.e hisdad and Nizami.
