Section A [20 marks] You are advised to spend 30 minutes on this section. Part 1 Read the following text and complete the given task. B U R G E R S A good, standard burger, made from

100% beef, topped with tomato ketchup, lettuce, tomato and chopped onion and held together in a sesame seed bun, is at lot healthier than you might have imagined.

It gives you just 15g of fat and 386 calories and can be filling enough to keep you going until teatime. You'll also get around a third of your daily protein from the burger plus iron for maintaining a good supply of oxygen to your muscles. Our advice: Avoid ordering double cheeseburgers. They supply nearly 60g of fat and over 900 calories, which we are sure you could do without. K E B A B S The doner kebab, consisting of grilled

meat in a plain pitta filled with salad, is a meal to avoid - it's literally dripping in fat. In most cases you're looking at 35g plus. The mixed salad is a point in its favour, though.

Our advice: Choose a chicken shish kebab. This is basically grilled, skewered chicken, also served in a pitta with salad, but containing only 10g of fat, making it considerably more heart-friendly than the doner. What's more, you'll get nearly all the protein you need for the day. You can liven it up a little with some chilli sauce. P I Z Z A S

Even if you go for the simplest, lowest fat pizza on the standard menu, you'll have consumed 1,140 calories and 34g of fat if you eat the whole thing. That comes to nearly 40% of your day's maximum if you're watching your cholesterol levels.

Our advice: To slim down pizzas, ask for less or no cheese and go for ones without meat toppings. Better, go for spaghetti dishes. A portion of spaghetti supplies only 9g of fat and 426 calories. B A K E D P O T A T O E S

A really good, filling option if you choose the right combination. With beef chilli, for example, you'll have put away just 16g of fat and the iron in the beef will have been absorbed better due to the vitamin C in the potato. You'll get a whole day's recommended dose of vitamin C in this one meal and nearly half a day's fibre.

Our advice: Don't go for fillings such as cheese with butter. That will give you 30g of fat minimum. In fact, don't go for butter at all. If the topping is tasty enough you won't miss it. Based on the information in the text, complete the table below. Burgers Made from (1) ________________ You get your daily

SULIT 6355/1 Part 2 Read the following text and complete the given task.

Hooked On The Web

Roger Ridgway is a webaholic. He is hooked on the web like other people are hooked on drugs or alcohol. Late into the night and first thing in the morning he logs on to the Internet, and he will spend hours at a time telling total strangers things he wouldn't even tell his best friends. Not that he has any "real" friends anymore. Roger's life has shrunk to the size of his computer screen. Even his family hardly knows him anymore.

Roger, who is a 19-year-old student in Bristol, admits that he seldom gets

to lectures, and that he is getting low grades. When he is off-line he gets restless and irritable.

"I once went two days without going on-line," says Roger. I hated it.

Talking to real people just wasn't any fun." But Roger is not alone. A recent study into Internet addiction shows that

the number of so-called webaholics is growing appreciably. The study showed that the Internet is as addictive as alcohol or gambling . The characteristic Net addict uses the Internet not for seeking information, but for social support, and the opportunity to re-invent themselves as someone else.

"In cyberspace, a shy, unassertive person can become outgoing and

forceful," said Dr Jenny Allbright, a psychologist at Abel Tasman University. On the Internet users can conceal their real name, sex, age, and appearance. "People who in real life are social disasters find that chat rooms and discussion groups offer them an outlet for their personality", says Dr Allbright . "While this may be a good thing in moderation, it can lead to dependence and obsessive behaviour." Those most at risk, it seems, are introverted adolescent boys.

Others are less convinced that it really is a problem. Being addicted to the

Internet may be no worse than watching too much TV. "We seem to be in an age where everything is an addiction if you do it to excess." says Dr Graeme Young, of the University of Technology, New Hampshire. Besides, if the Internet offers otherwise lonely people a chance to make friends, it may be fulfilling an important social function. " If these people didn't have the Internet, they might turn to something worse, like real drugs, or real alcohol," suggests Dr Young.

Nevertheless, support groups and help-lines for Net junkies are growing by

the day. Ironically, the best place to find help is on the Net. On-line counselling is readily available and chat groups for fellow sufferers are flourishing.

SECTION B [ 30 marks ]

You are advised to spend 45 minutes on this section.

Given below are three types of natural phenomena. These have caused much damage and destruction. However they also have contributed to mankind in other ways. Read the information about each natural phenomena, and choose the type you feel is the most dangerous. NATURAL PHENOMENA

QUICKSAND

VOLCANOES

THUNDERSTORMS

Quicksand is basically sand or other grainy soil saturated with an incredible amount of water. If you step on quicksand, you should not panic. The more you panic and struggle, the deeper you will sink. The best way is to relax. Then you will float, and you can save yourself.

Volcanoes give hints before they erupt. Molten rock rises up from below. A lot of lava will spew out and this can destroy anything in its way. At the same time, lava flows are welcomed by farmers, because they are very fertile and good for crops.

Thunderstorms are common and found worldwide. They spit out deadly lightning and band together to form hurricanes. Lightning is the key ingredient that defines a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms can prove to be deadly. Be careful never to get struck by lightning, because you can die.

Write an article in your school magazine about one of these natural phenomena. Your article should include the following:

* the phenomena you consider the most dangerous. * comparisons between the one you chose and the other two. * reasons for your choice.
