Perspective

KFH Malaysia has for the past few months been participating in a series of exciting events that have left a positive mark on our business.

as i write this message, i do so at KFH Malaysia’s new prestigious address at Menara Prestige, Jalan

Pinang in bustling Kuala lumpur. i am deeply pleased that our bank’s growth in recent years coupled with our strategic plans for future expansion have enabled us to make this move.

we have launched a series of Branch Fiestas and Bazaars across the nation in efforts to enhance our banking offerings and create more awareness for islamic banking and finance. Held in Kota Kinabalu, Klang, Kota Bharu, Kuching and shah alam, these events were a great success and helped us reach out to our customers. Our presence has increased with the opening of our 12th branch located at Taman Permata.

Furthermore, KFH Malaysia has taken a leap forward and signed a strategic partnership with Prudential BsN Takaful Berhad (PruBsN). This partnership is especially important as it opens up a wide range of products that cater to the protection and savings needs of KFH Malaysia customers. we are confident our customers will appreciate the lengths we are going to in bringing greater variety and innovation in product-related services.

while focusing on business, we have also been busy fulfilling our corporate social responsibility and reaching out to the less fortunate. we have been contributing to various orphanages in the country as well as spending time with orphans, a meaningful deed that our employees have enthusiastically given up their time for.

This Syawal, i would like to take the opportunity to wish you ‘Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Maaf Zahir dan Batin’.

Till the next issue of THe DuNes, i wish you all the very best in whatever you do and thank you for helping take KFH Malaysia to where it is today.

Best regards,

DATO’ JAMELAH JAMALUDDINChief Executive Officer

This article brings to light some aspects of the islamic banking industry, especially the endeavour of going global with a local presence.

Over the years, investment trends have undergone an evolutionary phase where many potential new markets have been discovered. Many investors are now shifting their focus to asia due to the region's revived economic growth. For example, China has the largest population in the world and the number of Muslims there constitute 1-2% of the country’s total population, with a recent census implying that there may be up to 20 million Muslims in China as compared to Malaysia with around 17 million. indonesia on the other hand has the highest population of Muslims in southeast asia.

How are these numbers translated into key challenges faced by the islamic banking sector? Many studies suggest that the critical success factors for banks to be competitive in this industry are product differentiation, pricing, branch capabilities, risk management capabilities, industry networks, technical/industry

knowledge as well as capital strength to support the financing needs of large advisory projects.

with that in mind, some of the strategies suggested are to increase industry focus, pursue opportunities of government support for sMes, pursue segments with the biggest profitability per customer, network evolution, brand positioning and developing segment tailored products.

However, the islamic banking industry is also faced with many other challenges such as business mix, funding, network and infrastructure, talent, market risks and differing stands on certain Shariah issues.

in view of these challenges, several studies have suggested that to ensure the sustainability of the islamic banking system regionally and globally, several factors must be considered such as transparent corporate governance practices, well-defined financial architecture, the enabling of legal infrastructure, effective regulatory oversights and adequate market discipline.

in that same vein, the following aspects are highlighted as key areas that are part of a dynamic environment such as infrastructure and services, competitiveness and performance, product development and marketing, factors that differentiate one instrument from another and returns from islamic versus conventional products.

going forward, islamic banking is expected to expand and no longer be confined to just a niche market as it is set to be the mainstream banking of the near future.

The stage is set for banks to play a more active role in promoting regional financial services to meet the growing financing needs of companies. with the rapid growth of islamic banking as compared to conventional banking sectors, more effort needs to be put in place, in view of the challenges faced by the industry as well as the uncertainty surrounding its global outlook.

Standardised assessment system launched

T he task team from the KFH group is now making visits to subsidiary

banks in its overseas markets to implement an internal assessment system for capital adequacy, in order to standardise methods and frameworks

concerning risk management. This new internal capital ratio

policy is performed collectively for subsidiary companies and also serves to unify the strategic approaches used by the group’s units in monitoring and managing risk. This will allow subsidiaries to benefit from the experience of the main bank in that field while also fulfilling the requirements imposed by regulatory authorities in the markets that KFH’s units operate in.

The KFH work team has just

completed their work at KFH Malaysia where employees also received training so they would be able to man the new system themselves. Turkey and Bahrain are the next stops.
