Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

Our engagement in power plant design and power supply systems puts us in a unique position to promote

sustainable development. We believe we can contribute by increasing utilisation of alternative energy

resources and maximising resource efficiencies. We adopt a holistic approach in our projects and aim to

incorporate various strategies to promote the sustainability agenda.

“ Look and listen for the welfare of the whole people and have always in view not only the present but also the coming generations, even those whose faces are yet beneath the surface of the ground - the unborn of the future Nation.”

We have experience in designing and building palm oil processing plants which utilise biomass for power

production. Zero waste disposal palm oil mill is an attainable goal with the current technology available. Our

renewable energy projects and energy saving strategies include :

3.2 MW Biogas Landfill Power Plant design in Bukit Tagar

Detailed design proposals for 60T FFB/hr and 45T FFB/hr Palm Oil Mills in Indonesia

Incorporation of energy-saving Thermal Storage Tank (TES) for KLIA2 DCP

Design proposal for energy-efficient LED street light along Kuala Lumpur - Karak Highway

Participated in Malaysia SEDA FiT mechanism application for 5 MW solar PV farm

The Malaysian Government has taken a step towards joining the international initiative in renewable

energy production. The Renewable Energy Act 2011 was passed to encourage growth in the renewable energy

industry. Malaysia aims to have 13% share of renewable energy in the power mix by 2050.

Apart from clean energy production, increasing resource efficiency is crucial in minimising our

environmental footprint. We have undertaken numerous retrofitting projects and integrated new energy-

saving technologies in projects. Our personnel have also successfully completed Green Building Index

Facilitator course.

We believe with the strong support from government policies, there is huge potential for renewable

energy projects in Malaysia. We look forward to more active participation in renewable energy and green

projects.

23

Solar Photovoltaic Feed-in Tariff (FiT)

Malaysian Government established a feed-in tariff mechanism to encourage renewable energy systems.

Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA) was tasked with overseeing and administer the

entire operation. Enmac in partnership with Chinese Solar Photovoltaic panel providers applied for 5 MW solar

PV farm in Tanjung Malim.

Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment and Water Recycling System

Palm oil mill design is fast approaching its mature phase, however, there is always room for improvement to

increase its efficiency. The key focus is to achieve “zero discharge” by innovating ways to process palm oil

waste.

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is the mixture of wastewater and other organic materials produced by processing

oil palm fresh fruit branches (FFB). In the early years of oil palm industry, POME was channelled directly into

waterways. It has been identified that POME should be dealt with particularly when the palm oil industry

boomed. POME’s oxygen depleting potential is 100 times greater than of domestic sewage, and poses a great

threat to the environment.

POME treatment technology has been utilised to minimise the environmental impact of palm oil processing.

There are three common system configuration for POME treatment :

• Ponding system

• Open tank digester and extended aeration system

• Closed anaerobic digester and land application system

24

Apart from protecting the environment, POME treatment yields numerous benefits :

• Elimination of large areas designed for effluent ponds which in turn can be used to increase plantation

area for oil palms

• Smaller team of skilled labour employed to operate the treatment process instead of relying on the

shrinking supply of foreign immigrant workers to clean effluent ponds

• Remnants of the treated POME can be processed and used as fertiliser for the oil palms

• Being one of the world’s major producers of palm oil, we have the duty and responsibility to lead

innovation in this industry, especially when oil palm industry has been associated with the large scale

loss of rainforests and biodiversity in our region.

100% POME

Enmac is currently involved with the 3cPalm Process system where POME treatment process is conducted

in parallel with water recycling system. There will be no discharge of POME (treated or untreated) into

waterways. All solid and wastewater drained from the mill will be discharged into a sludge drain tank where

the waste sludge will be pumped into a composting plant or distributed in the oil palm plantation as fertiliser.

The POME still contains considerable amount of palm oil. An organic solution containing microbes can be

added to the POME for oil recovery. The cost of this organic solution will be offset by the amount of oil

recovered. Treated water from POME treatment will be fed back into the palm oil mill. There will be an

estimated saving of 30% in water intake required for processing per ton FFB.

25

Biogas Plant Integration with Palm Oil Mill

Building on existing POME treatment technology, we can further push for zero discharge and zero waste

efficient palm oil mills. Biogas is an important by-product of the POME treatment process. A biogas and / or

biomass power station can be integrated into the palm oil mill to meet its power demands. Biomass power

station would use the existing waste materials like empty fruit branches (EFB) and shells as its primary fuel.

Advantages of Biogas integrated Palm oil mills :

• Entrapment of methane, a greenhouse gas more destructive than carbon dioxide

• Energy produced via biogas and biomass would be deemed sufficient for the palm oil mill operation, thus

generating large amount of energy savings

• Excess energy can be used to power local communities or fed back into the national grid

26

Smart City

Traditionally, cities have developed organically with purpose on elevate living standards via economic

means. “Smart cities” are loosely defined as cities designed with a holistic approach in urban planning

processes with emphasis on creating viable and environmentally friendly communities with excellent

economic prospects.

Smart cities differ from “green” cities, whereby urban planning focus isn’t limited to solely environmental

concerns. Advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) processes are integrated to

complement infrastructure and enhance its social capital, where communities benefit from city-wide

integration of technology and increase the city’s overall competitiveness. Smart City design focuses on five key

aspects of urban living. Smart City encourages innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in all aspects of urban

planning.

Smart cities are designed to coexist with nature while minimising our footprint. The sustainability agenda

pushes for innovative and efficient resource management framework. Renewable energy sources and

advanced green building technology will be utilised.

27

Human comfort is an important factor when designing amenities. Residents have access to affordable

housing, quality education, healthcare and maintain optimum work life balance. There will be competent

workforce and necessary infrastructure for the city to remain competitive and attractive to prospective

investors. High-speed broadband network will be an important criteria to maintain an edge over other cities.

Governance of Smart Cities should actively invite public participation to create a sense of community. Public

safety and public transportation shall remain of high priority for residents.

Smart City and ICT

Smart cities are designed with integrated ICT applications and services to develop as a globally competitive

city. Smart Grid is one of the known global initiatives to increase use of communication and information

systems in power generation, power delivery systems to provide real time monitoring and control. Smart Grids

comprises a mesh network of energy providers, grid operators, transmission and distribution and consumer

devices. Smart Grid systems enable real time monitoring of load demands and incorporation of renewable

energy allows for more holistic resource management and reduces system outages. ICT usage in Smart Cities

will not be limited to only power delivery systems.

ICT applications can be expanded to include other aspects of urban life. A central Distributed Load

Despatch Centre will be equipped to oversee the ICT applications. This allows authorities to monitor load

demand, traffic conditions, fire hazards in real time. Next generation wireless sensor network will form the

backbone for information exchange. Implementation of these services requires robust, secure data centres

and servers for minimum disruptions. High-speed and secure networks are crucial to ensure residents and

businesses remain connected.
