12 - 13 Disember 2017 - PusatPengajian Kejuruteraan Bahan DanSumber Mineral (PPKBSM) dengan ker-jasama ASEAN UniversityNetwork/Southeast Asia EngineeringEducation Development Network(AUN/SEED-Net) dan Japan SupportingConsortium (JSUC) telah mengadakan“Regional Conference on Materials andASEAN Microscopy Conference 2017”bertempat di Hotel Olive Tree, PulauPinang dengan tema “Creating sustain-able society through innovation in materi-als and biological sciences”. Seramai 250peserta menyertai persidangan yangdiadakan kali ini. Selain itu, 8 orang pro-fesor daripada Jepun telah dijemput bagiberkongsi kepakaran mereka dalambidang masing-masing. Persidangan initelah dirasmikan oleh Naib CanselorUniversiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Prof.Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail pada jamuanmakan malam. Dalam ucapan perasmianbeliau menekankan bahawa pentingnyasetiap penyelidik mengutamakanpemindahan ilmu yang diperolehi daripa-da penyelidikan kepada masyarakat.Selain itu, beliau memberi nasihat kepadapeserta persidangan agar mengambilkesempatan yang ada untuk mewujudkankerjasama pintar di antara institusi mas-ing-masing dengan universiti-universiti diJepun.

berlangsung di Hotel Marriott, Putrajayadan telah disempurnakan oleh YB DatukSeri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangaumerangkap Menteri Sains, Teknologi danInovasi. Selain Profesor Dr. Zainal Arifin,Profesor Dr. Yeap Guan Yeow dari PPSains Kimia dan Profesor Ir Dr. MohdNordin bin Adlan dari PP KejuruteraanAwam juga telah mengharumkan namaUSM setelah turut tersenarai di dalamTRSM 2017. 6 Oktober 2017 - Profesor Dr. AhmadFauzi Mohd Noor telah dianugerahi IjazahKehormat Kedoktoran dalam satu majlisdi Nagaoka University of Technology(NUT), Jepun. Anugerah telah disam-paikan oleh Presiden Azuma Nobuhiko didalam satu majlis yang turut dihadiri olehNaib Presiden dan profesor-profesor tert-inggi di Nagaoka University of Technology.Penganugerahan ini merupakan pengikti-rafan di atas sumbangan Profesor Dr.Ahmad Fauzi serta penglibatan beliau didalam meningkatkan kerjasama bidangakademik dan penyelidikan di antaraUniversiti Sains Malaysia dan NagaokaUniversity of Technology. Di dalam ucap-tamanya, Profesor Dr. Ahmad Fauzi telahmemperincikan sejarah hubungan diantara USM dan Nagaoka University ofTechnology yang telah wujud sejak tahun2003 lagi. NEW ACCREDITATION CYCLE2017

6-7 December 2017 - MaterialsEngineering Program and MineralResources Engineering Program receivedEAC panels visit for new accreditationcycle exercise. 3 panels were present,along with an observer for each programin 2-days evaluation. The visit includemeeting with the management team(Dean, deputy dean and program chair-man), meeting with academic staff, meet-ing with selected students, observation ofnumerous documents required for theaccreditation process, and also assessingour quality of teaching and learning,including the quality of assessment. Thepanels also had a thorough visit to ourlaboratory and other facilities related toteaching and learning. Various aspectswere evaluated including the direct andexplicit measurement of our program out-

comes (POs), the elements of complexengineering problem, problem solving,project management and environmentthat should be covered in our teachingand learning process. The evaluationprocess is vital to enable panel and EAC todecide whether the program has fulfill therequirement for accreditation as stipulat-ed in the EAC manual 2017.

9 November 2017 - Lotte ScholarshipFoundation has awarded scholarship totwo students from Universiti SainsMalaysia. Mr. Loh Wei Xing from School ofMaterials and Mineral ResourcesEngineering (Polymer EngineeringProgram) has been chosen as one of therecipients. He was chosen based on hisexcellent academic qualification andactive involvement in sports. The awardceremony was held in Lotte ChemicalTitan, Pasir Gudang.

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING POSTER PRESENTATION

4 October 2017 - The School ofMaterials & Mineral ResourcesEngineering (SMMRE) held its annualIndustrial Training Poster Presentation.In this activity, 120 SMMRE undergradu-ate students presented their posters anda brief oral summary outlining their expe-riences during the industrial training.Judges are nominated to evaluate theposter based on the standard rubric.

The quality of the presentations was veryhigh and generally the judges are satis-fied with the performance of the stu-dents. Clearly many students found theirindustrial training placements are suitableand the training provided them with avery valuable learning experience. Basedon the good achievement in poster pres-

entation, 33 students are selected toreceive awards and certificates from theSchool.

11 October 2017 - Polymer IndustrialExperience Sharing Seminar was held atDK 9, USM Engineering Campus. Twospeakers from industries; Miss Syazwinafrom Teleflex, Kulim and Mr. Firdaus fromPETRONAS Chemical Group were invitedto share their experience with the stu-dents. Both of them shared a good tipsand tricks on how to survive in industriesand advise the students not to stop learn-ing and gain knowledge because theworld is super challenging. In conjunction

with this event, MPA-PRPG ExcellentStudent Award and Best Final YearProject Awards have been awarded torespective Polymer Engineering Students.Mr. Chai Poi Seng, with CGPA 3.67 hasreceived the cash rewards (RM 1000) andplaque for the MPA-PRPG ExcellentStudent Award. Miss Zufarina and MissGan Ivy have received the cash rewards(RM 1000 each) and plaques for the MPA-PRPG Best Final Year Project Awards.

14 Ogos 2017 - Sambutan MerdekaRaya PPKBSM 2017 telah diadakan diDewan Sri Ilham Pusat PengajianKejuruteraan Bahan dan Sumber Mineral(PPKBSM). Majlis ini dianjurkan olehKelab Sukan dan Rekreasi (KSR) PPKBSM.Majlis dimulakan dengan ucapan aluandaripada Pengerusi KSR PPKBSM Dr.Khairul Anuar Shariff. Hampir 80 orangstaf PPKBSM telah memeriahkan programini. Sekalung tahniah kepada En.Mohamad Zaini Saari dan rakan-rakan diatas usaha bagi menjayakan majlis ini.Tema “potluck” yang diberi jelas terpan-car dengan pelbagai menu yang dihidan-gkan. Suasana turut dimeriahkan lagidengan dendangan lagu raya dan jugalagu patriotik. Diharapkan melalui pro-gram ini, ukhwah dalam kalangan stafPPKBSM dapat dipertingkatkan lagi.

CORROSION CAMP 2018- CORROSION CONTROL BY DESIGN

23-25 January 2018 - In collabo-ration with NACE Founding MalaysiaSection, the USM Student Section organ-ized a 3-day Corrosion Camp at School ofMaterials and Mineral ResourcesEngineering, USM Engineering Campus.There were 72 participants from variouslocal universities who took part in thisevent; undergraduate students, postgrad-uates and a few international participants.They came from different disciplines,which successfully achieved the aim ofthis camp, i.e to create corrosion aware-ness among engineering students. Thiscreated a good platform for the studentsto exchange their knowledge on corro-sion. The event consisted of technical ses-sions on various topics such asIntroduction to Corrosion andDegradation, Type of Corrosion, BasicCorrosion Measurement, MaterialsSelection and Design, Risk BasedInspection, Cathodic Protection, Coatingand Chemical Inhibitor. The camp broughtin industrial experts who are involved incorrosion and corrosion prevention : Mr.Soh Wei Ching, Ms. Chloe Lim En Sin, Ms. Kamila Hamid, Ms. Elizah Samat, Mr. Ben Biddle, Ms. Michelle and Mr. AhmadShamiri. Valuable experiences wereshared by the speakers and will becomevery useful for the participants when theygo out and join the work force. In addi-tion, participants also learned aboutteamwork during these 3 days. 26 September 2017 - Satu MoU telahditandatangani oleh USM dengan pihakMalaysian Rubber Exporter and ProducerCouncil (MREPC) berlaku pada 26 Sept2017 hingga 25 Sept 2020. Perjanjianpersefahaman ini bertujuan untuk mem-buka peluang kolaborasi penyelidikanserta perolehan geran berasaskan getah.Aktiviti ini bakal membantu PusatPengajian sebagai pusat kepakaran peng-hasilan getah peringkat nasional danantarabangsa. Bahagian Polimer PPKBSMjuga telah menghantar wakil ke’ lndustry-University Interaction Session’ yang beru-pa satu karnival promosi produk danpenyelidikan hasil getah anjuran MREPC.Kakitangan akademik yang terlibat ialahProf. Dr. Azura Abdul Rashid, Dr. Ir.Muhammad Khalil Abdullah, Dr. KuMarsilla Ku Ishak. MINERALBeberapa sesi lawatan akademik ke indus-tri berasaskan mineral seperti pengkuari-an dan perlombongan telah berjaya dilak-sanakan oleh Pusat Pengajian sepanjangsemester 1 dan 2 sidang akademik2017/2018. Lawatan membabitkan kese-mua peringkat pengajian dan disesuaikandengan kursus pengajian mengikut tahunpengajian para pelajar. Selain itu, aktivitiini juga dapat memberi pendedahanbermanfaat kepada pelajar di dalam men-gaplikasi serta memahami dengan lebihmendalan berkenaan industri berasaskanmineral di Malaysia. Selain itu, pelajarjuga memperolehi kemahiran berguna didalam mengurus, menyelia dan berkomu-nikasi semasa menguruskan aktivitilawatan ini.

6 September 2017- Majlis SambutanSiswa telah diadakan yang bertujuanmenyambut dan mengalu-alukan kehadi-ran pelajar tahun satu yang mendaftarsebagai pelajar di Pusat PengajianKejuruteraan Bahan dan Sumber Mineral.Majlis sambutan ini telah diadakan diDewan Kuliah 9 dengan kehadiran semuastaf akademik, pentadbiran dan teknikalbersama-sama dengan pelajar tahunsatu.

Majlis dimulakan dengan sesi bergambar,nyanyian lagu dan sesi memperkenalkanstaf oleh Prof. Dr. Zuhailawati BintiHussain (Dekan PPKBSM). Semasa sesitersebut juga, Prof. Dr. Zuhailawati BintiHussain, telah menyeru agar para pelajarmenggunakan peluang sebagai pelajar diUSM untuk berkenalan, menuntut ilmudan belajar daripada semua staf di PPKB-SM dalam meningkatkan tahap penge-tahuan dalam bidang kejuruteraan.
