Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

More THan JuST durianS!

One of my visions for PRC this Rotary Year is to foster closer fellowship amongst our members and their families. To re-cap, I have stated the following at the club assembly in June:-

“Foster closer friendship & fellowshipCreate more opportunities for members and their families to

fellowship in an informal setting e.g. outings, gatherings, games etc.

Assimilate new members quickly into the club through fellowship activities & projectsEncourage more participation from senior members & past

presidents in club activities”

Club Admin Director Sandy shares my vision. She had incorporated in her committee plans many opportunities for our Rotarians and their families to get together for fellowship this year. The first fellowship project was the Durian outing to Karak on 17 July 2010, chaired by our very hard working Rtn Brenda Lee.

More than 50 Rotarians, spouses, children and friends joined the trip to Karak. The programme started off with the famous Karak town Dim Sum introduced by Rtn KK Yap. The dim sum was delicious and our group had a hearty breakfast before we headed to the durian orchard.

The weather was pleasant and the 10 minute walk up the hill was just nice to work up an appetite for our next gastronomy treat. The durian connoisseurs had their fair share of D24, D2, (and all the other durian names that I do not know) while for the non durian lovers enjoyed sweet mangoesteens. The children also had a fun time chasing around with a pet chiwawa.

We had so much fun and laughter. It was a great opportunity for the new Rotarians like Brenda and Daisy to meet and get to know the senior Rotarians like PDG KB Lee, PP Dato Dr Lee Hoo Teong, PP Kumar Tharmarlingam, Rtn KK Yap. It was also a great opportunity for the spouses and children to get to know each other. So it was not just about durian. And on the way back some could not resist a detour to have some dessert at Bentong’s famous ice-cream and ABC. For this durian hospitality, we have the orchard owner Mr. & Mrs. Tan to thank.

I am now looking forward to our next seafood escapade on 15 August 2010 to Carey Island after our bi-annual visit to the Jenjarum Old Folks Home. Hope to see many of you there!!

“When stripped of all formalities and creed, fellowship flourishes.” Paul Harris, My Road to Rotary.

In Rotary Service,President RY 2010/2011

RC Pudu is blessed with a group of silent workers who are really uncomplaining busy bees who goes about doing their duty without being asked most of the time. Their duty appears to be for the Club and whoever is the head. It is this attitude of “SERVICE ABOVE SELF” that has served the club well all these years and is a sure formula for continuity and harmony.

Not that our Club doesn’t face discord, just that there are members who care that makes the difference. Members whose objective and vision is the Club and what Rotary stands for surely serves the club well to overcome the occasional dissention and differences of opinion.

A voluntary Club is made of a varied group of business and professional people, of differing status and position, but they are all volunteers. Thus to get them all to work willingly takes a lot of tack, approach and well intended projects that fits their idea of a service organization. So being sensitive and positive and then adding a dash of fun and fellowship will do very nicely to bring forth the explosion of active participation which might otherwise lay dormant within those members who might just be happy to sit quietly by to see things happen. Indeed these are the valuable silent hands that may just be waiting to be discovered or maybe these silent members have yet to be bitten by the “Rotary bug” (as one past president has said) and be hooked to Rotary.

Rotarians come and go, but the well meaning and true Rotarian will always have the Club’s interest at heart. They will form the core members of a club that will see the test of time, even perhaps in a “perfect storm”. Perhaps as some members have said, it is time for us to renew our energies and seek new directions to keep our Club meaningful engaged and focused. Its certainly food for thought.

In the meantime, perhaps the next time that one attends a Club meeting or event, spare a thought for our many silent hands who continues to ensure that the cogs of Pudu Rotary is oiled and functioning. And if the hat fits may these silent members take a bow and accept the quiet applause of appreciation.

... a surprise for Samon Suit Yong’s BirthdaY

The District Conference Committee meeting is next Wed at Lake Club Pool side at 6.30 pm.

On the District Level,

• On22August2010,thereisaspecialTRFseminaronlyfor the TRF Chairman & the President from 9 am to 12.30 pm at D’Villa, Jln Ampang.

Speaker PP Janice Lim of RC Bandar Utama gave an inspirational talk on her Club’s project called REACHING OUT TO JEHAI ORANG ASLI PROJECT. The orang asli in the Belum forest area are rather isolated and still cling to their traditional way of living off the forest. School is quite far away and most could hardly speak Bahasa.

In her own infectious inimitable manner she gave a vivid description of the project that can be described as heart-warming and meaningful. What started as a project to provide a basic school to be constructed with self-help in 1997 later expanded to include efforts to teach them basic husbandry, simple hygene and general well being.

It must have given the RC Bandar Utama much pride to see the initial bare school building of timber evolving into a classroom with tables and chairs (and linoleum floor) that seems to attract and encourage learning amongst the children. The addition of a toilet outhouse was another step to inculcate hygiene even as it serves as a basic toilet for the visitors.

PP Janice throws an open invitation to other Rotary clubs to be involved with them in anyway that suits them. For those not used to the jungle let alone staying a couple of nights there, she told of the use of an eco-tourist orientated rest-house in the lake that provides visitors food and shelter where one could enjoy the wonders of nature.

Its a long term project of her club and at the end of her talk she was seen talking to two very inspired Rotaractors and our RTN. Stanley. It was a project no doubt that could be expanded in time to come and its worthy to note that for a small club it is a great effort.

Thanking was done by PE Stephen Oon who appeared to be tempted to join RC Bandar Utama’s forthcoming project to climb Mt. Kinabalu to raise funds for polio- plus.

rc HK Harbour SayS THanK you

Dear President Choy Ying + IPP Robin

First of all I have to thank IPP Robin’s super efficiency. He beat me to it with his thank-you e-mail to RC of Hong Kong Harbour while we should be the first one to do it.

Again we would like to extend our sincere thanks to your kind hospitality starting with PP Rosemarie’s hotel booking for us. President Choy Ying, Rtn Jeff and George’s German-vehicles-only convoy to meet us at the airport. PE Steven’s wonderful party with the Fat Luk Luk and dessert lorry that definitely opened up the eyes of a Honky. On top of which, we really enjoy the fellowship from your sister club Mandaluyong and Rotary Club of Singapore West. We look forward to meeting your sister club RC Songkhla, RC Dhonburi in the future.

At your installation evening, we had the pleasure of meeting PP Chow Tain who established the sister club relationship with us about 15 years ago. The invaluable opportunity of meeting PDG Paul Lee and DG Lim is certainly an honour for us. Last but not least I met Rtn Edward Lee, the Rotary Foundation director whom I believe is also my mirror image as man charge of sister club affairs. My present positon is International Director. It is my intention to work on a joint project and matching grant together. This will give us more opportunities to get together.

Yours in Rotary PP Douglas, July 6, 2010.

Monday blueS

Monday 12 July, the day after Paul the Octopus’s prediction of a Spanish victory came true, saw many absentees from the club’s Monday meeting.

Indeed the World Cup (football) blue was evident as Rtn C.C. Wong appeared glum and PP Sim Bee couldn’t get over the fact that Holland lost to Spain in the finals!

Picture will show the empty tables at our meeting on that blue Monday.

rc buKiT binTanG reacHeS 54 MeMberS!

President Rick Loh of RC Bukit Bintang must be a happy man to have added 7 NEW MEMBERS into their club. Its quite an achievement and we must congratulate and try to emulate their success in their membership drive.

During our PP Albert’s year in 2001/2002 he was hoping for Pudu to reach 70. Just this past year IPP Robin Tay tried to reach 66 and he almost reached that. Like the typical technical analyst, one could predict that if we can reach 70 then the next high could be 80? Or conversely if we drop below 60 we could go down to 50?

Well, its just a thought!

“avenueS oF Service ciTaTion For individual roTarianS” (prepared by PP VG Chandran)

FOUR AVENUES OF SERVICE CITATION IS NOW KNOWN AS AVENUES OF SERVICE CITATION FOR INDIVIDUAL ROTARIANS.
