JGCC Golfi ng Guide
No handyman’s pants & shorts (with several pockets).
Greetings to all JGCC members. May Peace be Upon You.
It’s been quite a while since I last wrote on this Corner. The long absence was in fact deliberate, as I had initially intended to write only after the Management Commitee meeting so as to be able to update members on the current issues of the Club. Secondly, I wanted sometime to assess the atmosphere and condition of the Club before penning my thoughts.
In my last writing, I mentioned about the state of affairs of the Course and the several programs that we wanted to embark to improve its condition. As this programs involved costs and resources, we were unable to undertake any of it yet until the Management Committee gives the go ahead. To mitigate the adverse conditions. We had however undertaken some temporary measures. To this end, I am pleased to note that the course has improved from what it was 6 months ago. Of course, this is not the end of the journey. Course maintenance is a crusade without a fi nal destination. It must be constantly and consistently address. This crusade would however be less taxing and more rewarding if all golfi ng members do their part to assist in our objective to have a “Pleasurable Course To Play”.
Members can start by ensuring that divots are replaced at all times. Divots are part of the course fair wear and tear. In as much as you would expect dirt marks on your car the moment you drive it, divots would likewise occur on any golf course that is being played. Hence divots will occur more if the traffi c is heavy and vice versa.
It has always been considered bad etiquette if members leave divot displaced and not cover it either with the dislodged divot or sand. In doing so, golfers are extending courtesies to the golfers behind. No one likes his or her ball to be lying in a divot. Secondly, if the divot is intact with grass and roots, chances are the grass will take roots and re grow. Putting sand over the replaced divots ensure that the divots remain in place. If all golfers take time off to do so, we would have a pleasurable course to play in.
Replacing divots is a universal golfi ng ethics. In our course, we have caddies to do that job for us. We pay caddies to carry our bags and tip them for replacing divots, raking bunkers, cleaning our clubs and balls and other ancillary services as permitted by the golfi ng rules. Nonetheless, the onus is always on the invidual golfer. We cannot blame the caddy if the bunker is not raked if we ourselves do not ensure that the caddy raked it. Likewise, we are not absolved of our responsibility if caddies do not carry sand and replace divots. How the sand is being carried, is a matter of preference. Some like to carry sand bucket, some carries sand bags. Whatever the mode of carrier is, it is the duty of every individual golfer to ensure that sand is carried and divots replaced.
One other important issue on the course that we are currently facing is the green. Sometime last month, there was a broken pipe and this had caused the sprinkler system to be out of serviced. Unfortunately, the maintenance contractor had fertilized the greens on the same day. This had resulted in the greens being scorched. The contractors have been asked to rehabilitate the greens. As the roots are still weak, we do not intent to cut the greens for a while until it has developed greens by end of April in time for the Johor Amateur Open scheduled in May.
I note with great disappoinment that getting members to participate in monthly medal and inter club matches is always a challenge. Some event had to be cancelled due to the lack of response from members. The Golf Committee has organized these golfi ng events for the benefi ts of members and I do hope members would give their support by taking part in them. If there are any suggestions in how we could improve these events to encourage member’s participation, please feel free to approach any of the Golf Committee members including myself, to voice your suggestion.
Till we meet again, Happy Golfi ng
Your Captain
Hj Ishak Mohd Shariff.
Captain’s Corner
G O L F Course NewsA golf course play increases in response to user demand and popularity, the additional volumes of play cause added wear and tear upon the very fundamentals of a course. Deterioration of teeing areas, more and more wet sports, dry and barren spots on fairways, patchy, bumpy, soggy or concrete-hard greens, and bunkers that look like a ponds are all symptoms of excessive play.
Every course has a reasonable maximum desirable carrying capacity or volume of rounds, where turfgrass growth and maintenance can balance the volume of play. Age eventually takes its toll, regardless of the level of maintenance applied. At some point, almost every course must be remodeled; it is eventually essential. In general, the higher the annual number of rounds the sooner remodeling will be required.
Our golf course is showing the visual signs of wear and tear. This is a direct result of overuse, aging of the facilities, or excessive use which maintenance is unable to counteract. Many older courses, particularly those constructed in the 1960’s or before, were built using local materials,”push-up” dirt contruction methods, unscientific seedbed preparation, too small teeing surface, simple irrigation systems, and little or not subsurface drainage facilities. Golf play and maintenance equipment will add traffic, compacting, and wear, tear, leading to deteriorating playing and turfgrass conditions as any course ages.
As more new courses enter our market, the older courses face stiffer competition for membership sales, greens fees or the tourist golfer. Upgrading of the older course, to replace the mundane or boring design with something visually more attractive and strategically more challenging for the player, makes economic sense. Remodeling of private country club courses becomes inevititable too, as passing years render the cource “soft” or “average” in appearance, and lacking in today’s expected standards of visual dynamics and improved playing challenge.
The advent of technologically superior playing equipment, primarily in shafts, head engineering and golf ball design, shortens course at the same time as the ball flies farther and hopefully straighter.Modern nutrition and traning regimes yielding Tiger Woods and want-to-be Tiger Woods place new and serious impact upon older course, and some of recent design as well.
Remodeling, renovation, upgrading, and beautifying of any existing course must consider the long-term impact of any changes and improvements upon turfgrass maintenance. There are numerous designs that look great, are demanding to play, and unfortunately are very hard to reasonably and economically maintain. Improved turfgrass maintenance efficiency should be a critical focus of any renovation or remodeling program.
The Golf Course at Royal Johor Country Club was contructed in 1972. The present layout of the Course was done by YB Dato Ahmad Adam, the then Engineer of the Public Works Department of Johor Bahru. In 1992, teeing grounds, bunkers and the putting green complexes were spruced up in a renovation works. Turf for the putting greens was changed from the local serangoon grass to the Bermuda tifwarf and teeing grounds were covered by tifway 419. Additional bunkers were carved out and old bunkers were reshaped during the last renovation.
The present Golf Course is basically prepared for amateur and social golfing. Social golfing represents 90% of the usage of the Course. However, we have held three professional tournaments, namely the three editions of Iskandar Johor Open, on this Course. Amongst the problems we faced in the preparing for the professional events are :
a) Insufficient positions for holes
b) Green surface for the required green speed
c) Grass type through the green i.e. fairways and rough
d) Soggy Grounds
There were some difficulties in locating the positions for each hole for the tournament proper, the practice rounds and the pro-am held in conjunction with the professional event. The putting greens are generally small to comfortably locate the required 6 positions of holes in a week of play.
The present grass through the green is the local cow grass which is planted from the day the Course was constructed. The cow grass is not the preferred grass type for professional tournaments especially with the European golf professionals. Cow grass is classified as wet season grass and cannot be kept high especially for the rough as compared to the dry season grass.
There are several areas of soggy grounds in the Course. These soggy grounds are due to high water table which is rampant in undulating terrains. The high water table is probably due to the continually subterranean flow of the sprinkled water to the putting green which drains to the approaches of the putting green.
The ideal green speed for social play is 8 to 8.5 feet. Generally, we are able to achieve this speed for club's major competitions but may not be able to maintan this speed for daily social play. For the professional tournaments, a green speed of 10 feet is required. Much effort has to be put in by the green keepers to achieve this requirement. Furthermore, the aftermath of making the speed to 10 feet would be a 2 months of poor putting green surface for the turf to recover. In other words, there is a strain on the putting green surface at this moment to achieve the speed of 10 feet.

e) Surface Drains
f) Length of Course
g) Bunkers and other Hazards
h) Marquees for Guests
i) Accesses and Thoroughfares during the major tournaments
It is about time that the committee look into the above seriously in view of a solution for remedy. As the Royal Johor Golf Course in its current form is now over 35 years (with only a previous minor renovation in 1992), it is now past the time to have some substantial renovation work done. It is normal in the life cyle of every golf course to rebuild tees, putting greens and bunkers plant new grasses and thin out trees improve the drainage and irrigation.
Almost all the drains on the course are constructed for the sole purpose of conveying surface runoff after a storm and are not initially meant to be obstacles to the challenge in the adventure of the game of golf. Open drains are the most effective method for conveying the surface run off in the hot and wet equatorial climate but these open drains pose a problem in the Rules of Golf as these drains should be demarcated as Water Hazards/Lateral Water Hazards. These long narrow drains cut the course haphazardly does not augurs well aesthetically.
The present length of the course of 6954 yards is sufficient for the social play. There are rooms for lenghtening the course for the professional tournaments. Holes 18 and 9 can be transposed by pulling back the teeing ground and putting green to allow adequate space for marquees (see clause below) during professional tournaments.
There are insufficient rooms for the ideal positioning of the guest marquees during the professional tournaments. Additional marquees for other than the 18th putting green can be looked into especially, at the 9th putting green.
Transportaion accesses are a problem for major tournaments where large lorries are required to ferry the bulky containers and other equipments into the course and to other parts of the club houses. There is also no suitable location for the TV cranes. Spectators' accesses to the course should be given consideration that comes to watch the major tournaments. The make shift pedestrian crossing during the Iskandar Johor Open should be studied to make it as least semi-permanent.
The existing placements of the bunkers are effective obstacles for the amateur golfers. Considerations should now be given to professional play as many of the present bunkers and water hazards are not in play during the professional tournaments. The positions of new/old bunkers can be designed and/or incorporated in respect of the location of the new tee grounds, if any.

JOHOR GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Berita Tasek2ND HALF 2008/REVIEW 2009/2010 21
Over the past few years, the Iskandar Johor Open has certainly witnessed a meteoric rise in prominence to cement its stature as one of the biggest professional golf championships on the Asian Tour. The championship certainly won’t be where it is now without the enormous interest and tremendous support from the late Sultan, Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail.
A keep sportsman, Almarhum was well-known for his passion in many types of open-air sports, tennis, squash and polo but he was remembered most as an avid golfer.
Almarhum, who started playing golf in the 80’s would spend much of his free time at the Johor Golf & Country Club (formerly known as the Royal Johor Country Club), and his passion was a key force to his rapid progress in the game, where he was a scratch player at one time.
Despite his busy schedule, Almarhum used to play 72 holes a day, mostly at Johor Golf & Country Club. In the early 90’s, new golf courses mushroomed in Johor and Almarhum would fi nd the time to visit these golf courses.
Almarhum will always be remembered as the driving force for golf development in Johor. For a start, he was infl uential in shaping Johor Golf & Country Club to its current status as one of the premier golf courses in the state.
He was also instrumental in establishing a number of professional and amateur golf championships in Johor. One of them was the Royal Johor Classic, which was a permanent feature in the region’s golf calendar from 1985 to 1994.

For the Championship, Almarhum personally instructed for the trophy-known as the Iskandar Cup-to be ordered from London. The event started with RM100,000 prize purse and at its peak offered RM500,000 prize money, attracting top players from the region and counted current Asian Tour Executive Chairman, Kyi Hla Han, Filipino Frankie Minoza and Singapore’s M.Murugiah among its champions.
Other professional golf events initiated by Almarhum were the PFP Classic in 1985, the Aoki Hubert Green event on the Asian Tour and the Kosaido Ladies Malaysian Open, both in 1986. As for amateur events, Almarhum had a hand in making the Johor Amateur Open a permanent fi xture at the Johor Golf & Country Club in the early 90’s and the club remains as one of the favourite venues for the championship.
When the Iskandar Johor Open was iniated in 2007, Almarhum consented to having the Iskandar Johor Cup used as the Challenge Trophy. The handsome pure silver trophy weighing a litter over 5kg remains as Almarhum’s legacy to this Championship.
