Question 31 – 35

Read the dialogue below and answer the questions that follow.

Layla: Hey, what are you reading, Desmond?

Desmond: Hi, Layla. I’m reading a book about good and bad manners around the

world. I’ve learnt some really surprising things. Most cultures consider it bad manners to burp out loud. But in Japan burping indicates that you have enjoyed your meal and is considered a compliment to the chef.

Layla: That is really surprising!Desmond: In most Middle Eastern countries, it’s very impolite to display the

sole of your feet to another person. Also, they always use their right hand to wave or give things to people. This is because using left hand is considered rude.

Layla: Isn’t that quite similar to the Malay culture?Desmond: Exactly! This is very interesting. In France and Switzerland,

chewing gum in public is considered impolite. While in Singapore, chewing gum is banned after residents got tired of scraping used gum off their seats and sidewalks.

Layla: I have heard of that.Desmond: In some cultures in China, guests should not clear their plate completely.

Otherwise the host will keep on refilling the plate. Layla: Really? That is interesting.Desmond: In Greece, if you wave goodbye to another person, you have to do so with

your palm facing in. This is because any gesture showing your open palm is extremely offensive. There are many more interesting facts in here. Would you like to borrow this book once I’ve finished reading it?

Layla: Yes, I’d love to. Thanks a lot.

Dear Susan,

How are you? I hope you and your and family are well. How are your holidays so far? Did

you go to any interesting places? Last weekend, my parents took my sister and me toKidZania. We had fun!

What is KidZania you might ask? Well, it is a new theme park where kids can pretend to be adults. Originally from Mexico, where it was called The City of Children, the park includes buildings, shops, restaurants and even vehicles – everything that resembles a real city!

Children between the ages of 4 and 14 have the chance to do adult activities here such as working and earning money, and buying goods and services.

During my visit, I took the chance to be a fire-fighter, radio deejay, shopkeeper, dentist and even a model! Before starting ‘work’, the Zupervisors, the adult staff at KidZania, taught me about each occupation. It was great fun and I improved my language and mathematics skills. I also get to experience the responsibilities of being an adult. When you come to Kuala Lumpur next week, I can take you to KidZania. It will be an experience you will never forget.

Well, that’s all for now. Do write and tell me what you have been doing. In the meantime, attached are a few pictures of me at KidZania. Bye-bye!
