ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS
What is Reading? • Reading - active process of understanding print and graphic texts. • Cohen (1990) - mental processes that readers consciously select to use to complete reading tasks successfully.
• Walker (2000) – ‘active process in which readers shift between sources of information, elaborate meaning and strategies, monitor their comprehension, and use the social context to reflect their response’.
• Reading is important …
For use in personal life, school life, academic life, work life. It is the ONE skill we use everyday without fail. READING is VITAL for SUCCESS in any FIELD. Even Science and Maths require effective Reading.
PISA & MALAYSIAN CONTEXT • PISA or Programme for International Student Assessment
is an initiative by the Organisation For Economic
Cooperation And Development (OECD); administered every
three years.
• It measures how far students approaching the end of
compulsory education have acquired some of the knowledge
and skills essential for full participation in a knowledge
society. • As stated in the Education Blueprint, Malaysia aims to be in
the top one- third in the world as far as education is
concerned, assessments such as PISA is the best way to
monitor progress and gauge our success.
• Placed 59 out of 74 participating countries
• One- third lowest result overall
• Score of 398 for Reading Literacy
(Scored 414 in 2009)
• Below OECD average of 496 for 2012
• 52.5 % of students failed to achieve Level 2
which OECD has deemed the minimum level
necessary to enter adult life and become an
active member of society.

Main Domain
What is Reading Literacy? PISA 2018 Reading Literacy (OECD)
• Reading literacy is understanding, using, evaluating, reflecting on and engaging with texts in order to achieve one’s goals, to develop one’s knowledge
and potential and to participate in society.
• RL has a much broader context than just reading. Reading literacy encompasses application, judgement and contemplation of what is read in order to use the information for personal and professional progress as well as for the benefit of society.
• Baker & Boonkit (2004) - Reading strategies was defined () as “techniques and methods readers use to make their reading successful” (p. 302).
• Janzen (2003) - defined as plans and behaviors for solving problems when faced in constructing meaning (Janzen, 2003).
• Applying the appropriate Reading Strategy is neccesary in order to attain meaning in context and subsequently to achieve Reading Literacy as measured by PISA.
Reading Strategies

• Reading strategies are methods and techniques used for successful reading.
• Readers must select information, monitor, reflect and revise choices made during reading to achieve meaning i.e. metacognition.
