They need not be on opposing sides. The MS 1900 draws the varying elements of doing a business together under one certification.

There is room for success in the pursuit of business excellence without forsaking corporate morality and integrity. The next milestone and the next rung on the ladder can be reached with values and philosophies intact. And it makes good business sense to do so.

The MS 1900 features a shariah component by taking into consideration the shariah elements of ‘akidah’ (belief system), ‘akhlak’, (behavioural traits), and ‘fiqh’ (interaction with people, the environment and religious observance). For example, in the case of fiqh, the MS 1900 will look out for how this is incorporated into the governing values and philosophy of a company.

The Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) ensures that audits performed by SIRIM QAS International’s pool of experienced auditors are carried out in a professional manner and the Shariah requirements of MS 1900 are properly evaluated. Apart from demonstrating that it has a management quality system that ensures properly, defined and managed processes, it will also be able to demonstrate the incorporation of the relevant elements of Shariah into all of its processes.

Based on ISO 9001, the MS 1900 standard provides a framework for a comprehensive management system. An organization will benefit not only from a certification of its values but also of all its processes; from halal and non-halal aspects of production and delivery, right through to whether this is clearly communicated to every personnel in the organization.

Organizations from a wide array of industry segments meeting the applicability requirements can apply for and obtain certification to MS 1900. Certification to this standard will facilitate market acceptance especially among Muslim consumers and in predominantly Muslim markets such as Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
